Morning all.. I'm just wondering if someone out there knows what happens to our kiwisaver when we go on maternity leave...

Does it keep being paid from your paid maternity leave? or does it automatically go on holiday? Or do you have to organise for it to go on holiday yourself?

I can't seem to find any information about it anywhere!!

Thanks for your help.

You are best to call the Paid Parental Leave unit at IRD to know what happens, as IRD also administer Kiwisaver.

Freaky Becky, i'm on a mission to find this out today too - i will post whatever I find out.

A while ago I spoke to someone at IRD and they said it would stop for the time you are off work, but I need someone to confirm that it all happens and that they aren't going to carry on taking money from me.

I looked this up last week and here is some info from the official website:

http://www.kiwisaver.govt.nz/being/spec-circs/#01 - Kiwisaver Linky

In my situation I have just started getting Paid Parental leave payments from the IRD, so they already know I'm on maternity leave and I don't need to do anything.

Hi, Pepsi is right, I called the IRD, they said its all sorted, since you are not getting any income no payments will be made, but they did advise me to call me scheme provider and confirm that they were not expecting anything.

So i did and they said the same, when you are not earning that's it, although you can make contributions if you want to.

Hi BeckyB. When I ended up on maternity leave much earlier than expected, I was all in a panic because I hadn't had a chance to find out what happens with my Kiwisaver and maternity leave etc. I know what you mean about not being able to find any information about it anywhere - it was soooo frustrating. When I finally applied for my paid parental leave after bubs was born, I think there was a bit in the application form about whether you want Kiwisaver deductions to continue coming out of your paid parental leave. If you do (which I did), you have to fill out another form (Authority to Employer for Kiwisaver Deductions I think it's called) and send that to IRD as well. Then IRD take care of it all for you. I just assumed that IRD are aware I'm not receiving any further income while on leave so there's no need to apply for a contributions holiday. I haven't gotten round to letting my provider know I'm on maternity leave yet though - s'pose I should

That has been really handy to find out.

I will be using my annual leave till January then start PPL.

Good to know the little I will get from PPL wont take my Kiwisaver, but will it take Student Loan payments?
