When did everyone start giving their babies baby rice?

Caden is quite a hungry baby, he is on Heinz Nuture for hungry babys, but Im feeling a little uneasy about it, just after the uproar about heinz Nuture formula etc, plus Caden suffers from colic at night a lot of the time.

A friend of mines doctor told her to take her son off the heinz for hungry babys as he was getting wind and to put him on the normal one(but I wont put him on the normal one unless they change it back to how it was) and give him baby rice at night, im thinking about trying this with Caden.
But Im nervous about changing his formula again he seems fine on the heinz nuture for hungry babies apart from the colic at night and he is doing quite runny poos and they seemed a bit mucousy at one point today, not and formed as they used to be.

Im confused I think, all this stuff about formula stresses me out a bit!! Especially with all the stuff in the news about formula I hate not knowing whats going into caden.

Also what formulas do you guys feel are the best?

Sorry for the novel!

TIA

We love S26, and Daniel wouldn't have a bar of baby rice and still won't even now.

If you really think baby rice is something you want to try I'd first have a chat with your GP, at 3months his digestive system isn't ready for solids so it's better to do it after getting some advice.

yeah thats what I was thinking stacey, thats why i thought I see what everyone thought first...I dont want to upset his tummy by giving him baby rice to young.
maybe i could try the S26 and just up his feeds to start with, then when he is 4 months old, try and introduce baby rice.

Is S26 quite different than karicare? Cos the karicare constipated caden.

We have never had any issues with S26, karicare we had wind probs immediately, nurture just never seemed to suit Daniel well, always had constipation.

You could still go talk to the docs about the baby rice though. BIL was given baby rice at 6 weeks old! because he was apparently a total piggy and I've had a nosey at his plunket book so I know that just isn't MIL making things up lol

We started baby rice at 5-6 months. Eva loves it! I also think Caden is abit young to be able to digest it. I can't offer and advice on formula sorry, as we only introduced it at 7 months and use S26 lactose free. I've been happy with that brand though.

It's probably a bit young, having said that Jack was on baby rice at about 3 1/2 months (very very sloppy) as he was showing all the signs and my nurse, while hesitant, could see that he was ready so said go for it (proper food wasn't started for another month though).

We've had Jack on S26 the whole time and never had a problem. Quite cheap too

I'd say up the formula, or maybe try a different one before you offer baby rice.

Before about 6 months the lining of the gut is permeable which means that proteins which are ingested are absorbed into the blood stream which is why they recommend starting solids around 6 mths.

That said, baby rice is sometimes recommended as a feed thickener for refluxers from very early on, and is a fairly 'neutral' food so is less likely to cause allergies than other first foods so if he really isn't coping with just formula then baby rice is probably the best option.

Ok cool, thanks for the advice girls :)

I will hold off on the baby rice until after 4 months and put him on S26 and offer him a few mls more than he would normally have and see how we go.

Keziah was 4 months when she started solids, but she wouldn't have a bar of any of the Farex range... still doesn't now. She too was a hungry baby was boobie fed til 6 months and then we changed to S26 Gold once we weaned her...(or should I say she weaned herself)

we use Heinz gold for Sophie, but a good friend has used S26 for both her boys and is really happy with it. he younger boy is a hungry chap and is on the S26 hungry formula and loves it apparently.

I would try and hold off on the solids for a few weeks if you can.

Yeah I am going to hold off jaycee.
Caden seems to like the heinz formula so I am going to try him on the Gold Starter, its the same as the blue lid one(the old stuff0 but has bifidus in it.

Both Amy & Sophie had the gold formulas - Amy was on Karicare and Sophie on Heinz (I was so pi**ed of with Karicare changing their follow-on gold when Amy was 10 months that I didn't use it for Sophie! They added that FOS stuff and it did nasty things to her poo ). Hope the change over goes well.

I have to say that solids is whole other mine field of isses - looking back FFBF is so simple!! When Amy was 4 months+ I was very excited about starting her on solids. I held off until 5 and a bit months on advice form plunket and the novelty soon wore off!! Sophie didn't start until just about 6 months as I was in no hurry second time!

Jackson is on s26, hes never had constipation, nor has he suffered any wind.
Jackson started on solids around 4 months, only because my karitane nurse recommended it as he was a "big boy" Good luck!

S26 is good, that is what Andrew was on and what was given to me to try him on as well. You can buy the stick packs from New World (4 for about $5) but at least you wouldn't have to buy a tin and then find ot it doesn't suit him.

yeah thats a goos idea..

I did think about leaving him on the nuture for hungry babies, but they are actually going to be changinga ll their formulas over to the aussie stuff, so the formula will be different.
I want to keep him on one that isnt going to change.

Hi Sheena.  I would hold off on the baby rice until well over 4 months, as Rice is a hard substance to digest.  If you were going to start Caden on solids sometime soon, I would probably just start with apple or pears, or maybe pumpkin.  It's a lot more natural for him, and easier on his tummy.

Hope he goes ok on the new formula!  And eek!!  I can't believe he's almost ready for solids!  Wasn't he just born?  That's gone soo fast!

hehe I know! time goes too fast!

Oh ok, thats good to know, I was just going to start off with putting a teaspoon into his bottles and get him onto the rice gradually.
But the fruits and stuff Im guessing will be good for him being on formula.
