Hi Guys,
If any of you are into DIY Nursery, I've found this great person on trademe who does wooden cutouts in heaps of shapes and styles that you can paint and mount.
I've ordered things he doesn't have listed like Flowers that are nearly a meter tall and butterflies with dragon files that I will be painting and sticking to the doors of large white cupboards. Great way to brighten up a baby's room and it's cheap!!!
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Members/Listings.aspx?member=378319
I'll post some pics once i've done it to see if it looks ok.
I made these animal pics but I think they look a bit spack so i'll have to rethink them.

Just don't look up close LOL!!
Anyone else doing the DIY thing? I'll throw a coat of paint on anything I can get my hands on lol. DH thinks I go overboard and that a baby wont know the difference. How could a little girl not have a room full of colour?
Love to hear what everyone else is doing! It's a bit of a novelty seeing it's our first and I love having an excuse to decorate :)

I did Daniels room. He had 3 animal canvas's on his wall and I recently did a massive train one for him which took ages to do. I can't draw for sh*t but I can copy basic things. I saw the animal ones on trademe but didn't wanna pay $60 for them so drew them myself.

Wow that's great!! Your pics are gorgeously colourful - and I love the butterflies. I've been doing a few DIY things - like making curtains (with Mum's help, lol), quilts, painting canvases... it's amazing what creativity is brought to the surface all because a baby is on the way, lol.
These were the first canvases I painted for bubs:
Here's baby's quilt... my first time ever at attempting something like this, so just as well you can't see it life-size to critique it
Here's my most recent sewing project - a playmat with ribbons to attach toys so you can take them places without losing them (hopefully!)
And here's a pic of part of the nursery - spot the theme with the green bee fabric! (DH is in the family honey business you see...)
Sorry... hope that's not too many pics!!!

What gorgeous things you guys are making! I'd love to be able to paint/draw too but things just don't look like what they're supposed to be when I try lol. I do enjoy crafty things though, I will probably do some things for baby's room - might get some big wooden letters spelling out the name and paint/decorate them. Am going to make some curtains too. I'm lucky to have a Mum who does lots of quilting and a friend who is just getting into it, so Mum is making a bassinet quilt, wall hanging AND floor play mat thingee and my friend is making a cot quilt
Ooh just had a look at that guy's listings on trade me, they are cool! I might get some of those and attempt to decorate them too! I guess I could just paint things one colour, shouldn't be able to stuff that up too badly lol

Wow the nursery's are looking awesome, well done! It so makes me want to do something like that but I can't draw either... dam it!
I have been looking on tradme and I saw one lady who was selling material pictures on a canvas so it looked like paintings, when I was in spotlight the other week I saw her pictures, they were off curtain material of winnie the pooh... thought I might try a couple out as the material was very cheap!
I can't wait to see more pictures to get more ideas!!

Give it a go Mel&Kel! All you need is the fabric, a canvas from the warehouse (or where ever) and a staple gun. I think the fabric covered canvases look fantastic and they are so simple to make. Also makes no difference if you're artistic or not. I get my ideas from surfing the net and seeing what the pricey shops are selling. Then I go make it. Looks the same from a distance LOL

Kebakat I love your canvases! So bright
Fleury - you guessed right: the green is my version of neutral. I decided it was a little more interesting than the typical lemon yellow Hopefully won't be long now and I'll know whether this little one will be wearing blues or pinks! (C'mon bubs...)
Another idea I had that's in keeping with the fabric on canvas... I thought I might get a larger canvas, cover it with the fabric, then staple, say, 3 strips of wide ribbon vertically onto it (only stapling where it reaches onto the back, so it's loose on the front). Then you can buy little pegs and peg photos/pics of bubs to the ribbons... ta-da, you have your own original photoboard. It's an idea I picked up off a friend - they have one like it in their bathroom!! Probably not something I'll get around to doing before this little one arrives though...

Kmarie if you do that you will have to post a photo so we can see it!
I might have to look at some material canvases, will post one if/when I do it!
Danaj good idea to look at the pricey shops, I might have to try it!
I got some winnie the pooh stickers and wall borders from USA (got a couple more than I need to sell on TradeMe so they wouldn't be too expensive)... do you think if I start with winnie the pooh I need to do everything pooh or would it look good if I did a mix of things, like animals too? Most things you see on the net are themed.

I reckon you could go with a mixture of things. The lamp in our nursery is a winnie the pooh one (cuz it had a pale green band with bees on it on the shade, lol) but that's the only winne the pooh thing in there. If you want a theme, you could always opt for one that is more colour based - even one as simple as bright colours (that's where mine started from!)- and your winnie the pooh things will tie in
Hmm.. you make it tempting to give the canvas idea a shot - I guess I'm secretly hoping I won't have much time left before this little one makes an appearance. Plus I don't have a gun stapler so would need to track one down... will let you know if I get around to it!

wow they look great!!
living so far from shops is really hard sometimes, thank god for trade me!
i painted a old set of drawers bought cheap from a garage sale a really nice lilac colour and the drawers white, we are going to paint the handles with butterflies on them. they look just like the ones out of giddygirraffe but cost us a total of $75 incl paint and sand paper. we had heaps of paint left to paint some shelves and a bedside cabinet that we got from a garage sale too. i think ill get some canvas and paint it lilac as well and just glue one of those butterflies from the $2 shop on it. i saw them on trademe and they look great. its like having a designer room for her without the massive bill!!
now i just have to get her sleeping in there

I cant believe how creative you guys are ! everything looks awesome , well done !
I did a big pic for C , and in some areas i built it up so it was sort of coming out
i did that by sticking newspaper down , like paper mache and then the last layer with white paper and painting it, i wouldnt do it the whole pic, just say , on the clouds, a couple of butterflies and a few flowers .
Wish i still had it , have no idea why, but i threw it out when we moved

-------------

|
Posted By: Danaj

I just used a water based acrylic. I stuck them on with PVA and it seems to be holding. They're made out of 4.7mm MDF so they're pretty light. She'll probably try to pull them off when she starts tearing round the house but they should go back on ok. Another Idea I had was using Velcro Dots on a rough coloured fabric canvas. That way bubs can pull them off and change it around for a bit of fun.
One more piece to make to go over the change table and that should be it I think. Might do something similar as the cupboard but a different theme and on a large canvas.
Does anyone know where to get really cool large rugs at a cheap price? All the nice one seem to be hundreds of dollars. Don't want anything dark as pet hair is a nightmare even if the pets don't go in the room.

I got a large pink and yellow butterfly shaped one for $40 down from $80. It's about 1m x 1.5m. sorry I can't work out how to put photos on.

Here's a pic of the photoboard I made for the nursery (excuse all the belly pics... I look forward to replacing them with pics of bubs when he or she finally arrives!).
And here's a pic of the other side of the room with the cot all made up. My friend made the amazing Incy Wincy Spider quilt. The set of three canvases are some I painted quite early on this pregnancy. The wall to the right is where I've now put up the photoboard. Oh yeah, and as our surname is 'Cammell' (pronounced cam-ELL) we picked a camel mobile for baby Cammell

I originally thought I'd need to buy some little pegs to make it work, but was very pleased to find that the regular sized ones were perfect
Dagster - I think we put the cot up when I was about 30wks along... it was actually great to use for storage of baby things while I was sorting the room. I only made it up with sheets/quilts last week. So if you feel like putting yours up now, then I say go for it!
