I saw a beautiful hammock in a babyshop. It said on the box that you can use it instead of a bassinet or cot (up to 6-7 months).
Does anyone have experience with this? It does really appeal to me, but I'd like to know what other people think about it. |

We have chosen to go with a hammock - everyone I know who has used one has sworn by them. The idea is that when the baby starts to fuss, the motion can settle them again.
For us the benefits are: - Settling and security (cocoons bubba) - Cat can't get into it - Portable (ours has a door clamp as well as a stand) Obviously we haven't had the experience yet, but really looking forward to using it. However, from what I have heard, most people move their babies to a cot after about 4 - 5 months. I don't know anyone who used it up to the 9 months that most of them say they can be used for. You can pick up some good deals on TradeMe. We got our hammock and stand for $105 off TradeMe and then ordered a new mattress and sheets from the company direct. All up about $150. |

I  mine (but we had to give it back after a month). We got it at week 2 as Daniel was really struggling to sleep. It, along with swaddling, made a huge difference to his sleep. I know one baby who is in it at 4 months. If we had bought one, then I would plan on using it for a while longer. They seem to recommend stopping using it when they start to roll. It may also depend how big your baby is - Daniel was about 57cm when we gave it back, and there was maybe another 5-6cm at the end of it. We transitioned him back to the cot by initially putting him in the cot for day sleeps, and then after a few days he was back in his cot for all the sleeps. The advantages of the hammock were that it cocooned him (meant to be similar to being in the womb), it gently rocked, so if he needed a bit of help we would just rock it for 5-10 minutes and it would do the trick, and that it was portable. We've got one that we can borrow from my cousin if we need it. My sis in law who is a nurse says that they're fantastic for colicky babies. The idea sounds great to me! The only thing is that you have to stop using them once your little one has learnt how to roll over cuz you don't want him or her falling out of it  -------------

We our hammock too! I bought it in desperation after lil miss had been screaming for days with reflux and she settled in it immediately. She seems to like the security of it, and I like that I can bounce it gently when she's unsettled and she crashes out quickly. we are totally getting one too. i really like the idea of them and i know heaps of ppl who have sworn by them. it reduces chances of cot death too which is aweosme. here is a thread on it somewhere 'product reviews' maybe? -------------

We cheated and had a hammock and a bassinette. ....she slept in the hammock during the day so she could be in the same part of the house as us ... I must say it was much easier to settle her in it than a bassinette as we could bounce her to sleep. You can actually just get another spring to take there weight if you want to keep them in longer.

Yup, used ours for both babies and LOVED it!
7 months for our first, (she was little) and 4-5 months with our second. Both our babies were rolling both ways by the time we made the move into the cot, it made no difference to their safety in their as they are supported by the sides of the hammock which prevent them from rolling over. ------------- Mel, Mummy to E: 6, B: 4 and:

You can't use the ones that go under the mattresses, as they need a flat surface to work.
I am going to use a Respisense monitor instead. I like this better because it is much more portable (eg you can use it when bubs is in car seat or bouncinette etc). well i had a hammock for both mine for the first couple of weeks and had a bit of trouble with it. Xavier plain hated it and refused to sleep in it.. and it was easier for me to have him in bed anyway being a single mum... and some general laziness on my behalf. 
But i really wanted to do it with Aliana because they are so sweet looking and i love that you can jiggle them back to sleep so easy so we got one again but gave up after a few weeks. I dont know what was wrong with it, I just felt her feet were higher than her head and with me having a bad back because of pregnancy i found it hard to bend down and put her in it gently. My Plunket nurse told me off for it too for some reason, apparently their back needs a flat surface after a couple of weeks to straighten it. I dont know how true this is and i tend not to take all the "advice" from the plunket nurses but we chose to start sleeping her in a bassinet. We have a hammock and love it. At first DS didn't sleep in it, till we found out that some newborns need a folded blanket under the mattress to straighten it out a little, as he was folding up in it and was obviously uncomfortable. Before I found this out I ended up moving it out of our room and using the portacot as he wasn't sleeping. Probably something the hammock companies should mention as we almost gave up on it.
Anyway, once we put the blanket underneath the mattress he slept really well in it. We left it in the lounge for day sleeps tho and have put the cot up in our room. I know someone who kept their wee girl in the hammock till at least 9 months. |

Chiara has a Respisense monitor too, I used them with the gremlins and they are great. I do have an under mattress one as well and it does work under the hammock mattress but it makes the hammock mattress flat so it doesn't cocoon bubs and I found she kept rolling sideways on it so now I just use the Respisense. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

Oh and I have a folded up blanket under the head of Chiara's hammock, you can see the edge of it in the pic above. The instructions with the Natures Sway one said to do that. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

That's really good to know about the blanket under the mattress for reflux and babies who don't want to be bendy. I didn't know about that - hopefully it's a trick I can use if I have to to ensure we are hammock successful!!

I bought it from www.b2k.co.nz.
Have a bit of a look on Google, searching NZ sites. You might find about $10 difference in price, but some sites do free shipping. I have NEVER seen them on special for anything more than about $10 off RRP.... and I hunted for months!! I think I ended up paying $179 with free shipping. Don't buy second hand, as the batteries only last a year and then you have to send it off to get it replaced. |

Oh, Kristy... BabyStar used to sell them as well. I think in the Bounty Book there is a 10% discount at BabyStar.
Or, give them a call and see if they still sell them. I am happy to send you my discount voucher if I can find it! |

I got mine from B2K too and coz I hired my doppler from them when I was preg with the gremlins I got a 10% discount on the Respisense.

I loved our hammock. We got ours when Jack was a month or 2 and it was great as I put it in the lounge for his day sleeps and he had a bassinette in our room at nights. We got ours off TM, Natures Sway were selling 2nds hammocks and stands so it was cheaper although it took a while to actually find the flaws!! ------------- Lindsey
