I'm planning to use cloth from birth with my little one due in March. I've been collecting up nappies over the last few months, snapping up bargains when I see them, but now that I have quite a pile I'm wondering - how many nappies is too many?

I didn't start with cloth on Leo until he was 5mths old so I'm a novice when it comes to newborns in cloth. I just wondered how many nappies will I realistically need if I want to wash every other day? I think I have about 25 newborn/small nappies - a variety of fitteds, AIOs and pockets. Is this over the top?

We had 24 nappies for Jack and I washed every 2nd day which worked pretty well

I'd say that is a nice sized stash, it means you won't need to wash quite so often which will be handy in the early days. I don't think you "need" anymore though .

you can never have too many cloth nappies

I usually tell people that 18 is a good number for a newborn - you'll be washing more in the early days but that doesn't last too long

We had 12 small and were always stuffing the pockets off the line as we were using the last or second to last clean one.

I'm not PG yet, but am/was keen to use cloth. The more I read these threads the more put off I get though. There are so many different kinds / sizes / types I am totally confused about what we would need and when. It also seems on a lot of the pics that the nappies are just huge on most of the babies. I saw some in kirks the other day and had a look and there were so many layers in there the child would have a bum nearly as big as mine!

You can definitely stop there! We have 12 and had to wash every day but it was summer and I didn't mind. 24 will be sweet.

One thing that surprised me was that the cloth nappies didn't fit Kryssi right from the word go. She was 57cm and 8lbs but she still didn't fit into small clothies until a month old. So it was good to have some disposable back-ups for that time. If you are going to have a baby shower, you might get some then.

I have a few teey nappies that I'm pretty sure will fit from birth - Swaddlebees OV newborn, Kissaluvs size 0, and the new style HC smalls (which fit from 2.5kgs). My first baby was 2wks early and born 3.2kg, whilst my last baby was 4kg born only 1 day over his due date, so I'm not expecting anything smaller
