Hi am visiting from the Planning Pregnancy forum (would love to be here full time one day!)

I've just been diagnosed with a 2cm dermoid cyst, one of those crazy ones that can have teeth, skin, hair, etc in it

I don't know much about them so far as I have to wait for my gynae appointment, but have been googling a lot over the last day, not always a good thing to do lol! But mainly I'm worried it will stop me being able to have a baby.

So since you gals are preggy and maybe already have kids, I would love to know from you if you know anything about dermoid cysts and pregnancy. Especially successful pregnancy!

nellybelly - I had a dermoid cyst in my right ovary, but when they took it out, they had to remove the whole ovary and fallopian tube because it had turned cancerous. It was 8cm in size when they removed it, but mine did not have the teeth and hair in it, due to the cells turning malignant. I was 12 at the time, and just before I had my first period.

I also had to have a course of chemo, just to make sure none of the tissue managed to break away and latch itself to other parts of my body.

I was told that I would never be able to have children, and my left ovary was starting to do funny things. My left fallopian tube had extensive scarring due to the cyst. I was diagnosed with endo at 13, and also my remainding ovary was classed as anovulatory, which means it does not ovulate on a regular basis. I've also had fibroid growths cut off my uterus as well.

My cyst was caused by hormone flucuations in my body, and that is when I learnt that the amount of chemicals that we expose ourselves to on a daily basis can have a huge impact on fertility.

To cut a long story short, I managed to get pregnant this year. It was planned, and was told by my GP and specialist that my chances of getting pregnant were 1%, as I don't ovulate that much, even thought I was getting regular monthly periods for a couple of years. My GP said it was a fluke that I ovulated on the month I got pregnant. My GP was concerned I may have had an ectopic pregnancy due to scarring.

Well 23 weeks later, I am growing a healthy baby boy inside of me, and the only complications I have had so far is having placenta praevia. I am having an elective c-section, but that is to make sure I do not burst or tear any scars on my uterus, and also due to my placenta being in the wrong place!!!

There is still hope, but I would highly recommend being as healthy as possible. Most women I know who have had dermoid cysts go on to have children.

lady_aset you have been through so much, it is very humbling actually. You are a survivor, that is for sure.

I knew there was a chance of cancer and of ovary/fallopian removal, and in my mind thought that if either of those two scenarios came up for me it would be the end of being able to start a family. Your story gives me a lot of hope. Thank you!

Massive congratulations on your 23 wks!!

nellybelly - that is ok :-) I had the surgery nearly 12 years ago (the removal of the ovary and fallopian tube), and had my last lot of surgery for endo and fibroid growths about 7 years ago. In total, I have had about 5 lots of surgery.

It may take a little longer than usual to conceive, but it can happen. I would highly recommend going through a specialist, as GPs generally do not understand the side effects of having a ovary removed and tend to think "she'll be right mate" mentality.

I consider myself lucky to get pregnant, as there was a high chance that the chemo could have affected the genetic viability of my eggs, and I am not able to go through fertility treatment, as the fertility drugs could cause another cyst and/or tumour. My DH and I decided that if I could not get pregnant within 2 years of actively trying, we would go ahead and adopt.

I also forgot to add that my cyst was a combined dermoid cyst/malignant tumour. So basically started off as a dermoid cyst, and part of the cyst turned into a tumour, which then turned cancerous.

They will probably get you into surgery asap, as dermoid cysts are very unstable.

If you have any further questions, feel free to PM me :-)

Hi, I had a derm cyst removed when I was 18, lost one ovary and tube. Am now 25 wks, first baby with placenta previa.

Just dealing with a midwife at the moment, but may look to a specialist after scan in 3rd trimester

Yep I've got one, But mine's a bit bigger than yours 7+cm Dermoid

Was 2 days away from having the Op to remove it and my ovary when I found out I was pregnant, So now I have to wait until after bubz is here to get it removed...
The Dermoid was found back in August 2006 and I got pregnant while having one so I can't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to do the same
