Thomas has a lump on the left side of his neck - like his glands are up there or something. He's not bothered by it when I touch/press it.. Would this be usual when they're teething (which he is)? He doesnt have a temperature or anything either. I'll see if theres a saturday doctors open here tomorrow and take him, but if not I'll wait til monday. If he starts showing signs of distress then i'll find an A&E in chch to take him to.. Anyone else had this sort of thing?

No idea sorry, just wanted to let you know that if you have a copy of the northern outlook then they list in there the docs that are on call over the weekend. In Kaiapoi one of the surgeries is normally open from 10-12 and then again from 4-5.30pm, probably do the same in Rangiora or there is the 24 hour clinic on bealey ave in the city.

Hope it is just a gland or something, doesn't sound too serious if his temp is ok and he is happy.

oh my friends wee girl had this not that long ago..... bugger cant remember what it was but it was some sort of infection in her gland or lymphnode (sp?) she did have to go to hospital and have it looked at and some fairly major antibiotics though so i would definately get it checked out. Wasnt anything life threatening or to major though and didnt even seem to bother her, she just woke up with it one morning and my friend took her to the doctor who sent her into the hospital.

There are glands at the back of babies necks, ella had these come up when she had cradle cap - so it can be a minor infection

Try checking bubbas head for cradle cap

My DP's nephew had a lump in his neck that ended up being a funny bit of rib!
Worth getting checked out I think.

well after 4 hours at the supid a&e, we got to see a doctor for 5 mins, and its an inflamed lymph node/gland. He's got inflamed tonsils too, but the doc reckons thats cuz he's had a few colds. Have to wait for monday to take him for a blood test to find out whats causing the swelling. He's in a good mood tho, he started making lots of noises at me today when i was talking to him, and that was a first!

Yep! Caden had/has one on the side of his neck aswell and I got the doctor to look at it when he has his 6 week check and he said it was a gland, cos he has one on the other side aswell just smaller. So i think cadens glands were up a little bit as he has had a bit of a cold.

We're just about to head off to the hospital. He's gotta have a CT and all that crap to find out what it is. Poor little thing. I'll try and update later on if I can.

So Thomas is on some heavy duty antibiotics in hospital. They're gonna do a biopsy of the lump tomorrow and a scan to see what it is. They did lots of bloods etc and all we got back from that was it's not cancer, which was a relief. Matt is staying with him tonight so I can get some sleep and I'll be doing the night shift tomorrow.. Its the first night i've been away from him since he was born and it's horrible. I cried all the way home from the hospital.

The docs saw him this morning, apparently its not full of fluid, so they're just gonna make him stay in and have the IV drugs til it goes down. Means possibly a week or so >.< I'm had it already and this is only the second day! Mums with him at the moment so I can have a sleep - had absolutely none last night even tho I was home. Matts in bed asleep right now too. Its my shift at the hospital tonight - thank god they have a fold out bed in his room else i'd be protesting!

Well the dramas we've had! I was going to try and make it for coffee this morning as Matt's doing the day shift, but I didnt quite get back from the hospital in time.
So whats happening..
thomas's IV line got blocked as they do when they're so little, so it had to come out - 12 trys later and they STILL cant get it in. He had an ultrasound this afternoon which has confirmed its an infected lymph node - and not cancer (hurrah) He's just gotta have really heavy duty antibiotics for now. He's also gotta have a pick line installed (where they cut open a vein and put the line in that way) so he'll be under a general for that this evening which isnt really that fun.
So, thats all for now - other than apparently the fire alarm went off at the hospital and they're having to bloody evacuate everyone LOL!

Thank goodness you know what it is and that its fixable though.
You guys must be shattered. Big hugs all round!

Oh my god how did I miss this thread??!! Alex that's so scary, I hope the mega-antibiotics kick in and improve things quickly and wee Thomas gets to come home soon. You guys must be exhausted - after one night in hospital with Keira I was sooo tired, I can't imagine doing it for so long. I'm glad your mum is there to help too. Huge hugs, hon!

Just got home.. He's doing really good. They didnt have to put a pick line in thankfully. They gave him nitrous and that relaxed him enough for them to get a normal line in his wee foot! This time they're gonna keep it open with fluid so we dont get the same problem. He was happy to see me when I took Matts dinner down for him - got lots of smiles and gurgles, but it was so cute, he just kept looking at his daddy <3 So yea, he's gonna get better faster now that the line is back in :D Should be home by monday!

Sooo...
Thomas can come home once he stops getting temperature spikes.. They're gonna wait til that happens, put him on oral antibiotics for 24 hours and then he can come home.. But who knows how long it will take for him to stop doing that :/ I'm getting really pissy with the hospital, we got moved TWICE today so others could have the rooms we were in. So annoying. So we're in one room til sunday then they'll move us again unless someone else needs it. Its quite rediculous.
