Because I have been 35 for most of the time I have been ttc I started the referral process after 6 cycles of trying. I think it very much depends on your age and how relaxed you are about it taking a while. I went to my doctor at 5 months and then 9 months and got a referral to the specialist then. Because I'm not waiting long enough to go public I'm paying, but I was getting a bit uptight about waiting so decided it's worth it. ------------- http://alterna-tickers.com">

Yep, had a chat to my GP about 6mths in, wasn't overly concerned then about time so she said taking into account my age (I was coming up 31 at the time and kinda in that limbo about suggested time to wait for age) she said come back at 10mths if no luck and she'd start doing the prelim tests (CD3&21 bloods and an ultrasound for me, semen analysis for DH)... did that and ended up getting referred onto fertility specialist after about 15mths.
However, as the others have said, if you can afford to pay (for the first appointment at the very least) and you're concerned, I'd self-refer to a specialist. ------------- http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">

Thanks for that. We're at 8 months now, and I'm 27, so perhaps it's something to look at in the next couple of months.

Hi Jade,
My docs (incl spec) thought it would be a hard road, so I only had to wait 3 months before referring to my normal specialist for drugs. I had to pay though obviously. I will be doing the same in October if we aren't pg by then. I have no idea if you have to provide charts - I had an ultrasound and bloods at the spec to determine ovulation. |

I was already doing my charts, but don't think the doctor would have thought it was necessary but it at least showed that we were trying at the right time. She sent us for the blood and semen tests first too. ------------- http://alterna-tickers.com">

Hi, i saw the Dr i think after 6 months and then a year and kept seeing him right up until i got pg (we were trying to convince DH to do a sperm test so i could get referred to the specialist for a lap & dye).
I asked my Dr about charting and he said to do it before I saw the specialist with at least 3 months of charts so they could check my cycle -------------  Angel Baby Aug '12, Feb '13 |

I was seeing my GYN for something unrelated about 10 mths in so he arranged the blood tests, I got preg the next cycle. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

I saw my gyne earlier this year and he told me if I wasn't pregnant 3 months after trying to come back and see him. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

We went and saw our GP before TTC to have pre-conception blood tests done. He gave me a prescription for folic acid at the time so I have been going back to him every 3 months but he didn't seem to think that there were any problems when we weren't conceiving. Even after we hit our 12 month mark he said wait a couple more months, and then when I went back to him next time he said that the public fertility specialists weren't accepting referrals unless you had been trying for 2 years. I went back to him a couple of months later because my AFs had become absolutely unbearable and got a referral to both the fertility clinic because we hadn't conceived and a private gynae for the pain. All up it was about 18 months before we got anywhere with out GP. And I'm 27 the same as you. Now my gynae is saying if we don't conceive within 6 months of the lap we can go to IVF, but given my age we can keep trying for 12 months if we want to. ------------- TTC#1: Jan 07 Aug 08: Lap found and excised Stage 3 Endo Nov 08: 2nd lap clear - given OK to TTC after next AF |

Emily - wow, that did take a while! So GPs can sort out things like Clomid, right? Or whatever the treatments are for sperm stuff  ?

Not sure about Clomid, but my GP did some blood tests and a SA. Then after he referred me to the fertility specialist they said next step was to do CD3 and CD21 bloods which my GP did. All came back normal, but I'm assuming if there had been a problem I would have been sent to the fertility clinic.
Also - endo doesn't affect ovulation. I had stage 3 endo and I ovulate every month and my cycles are fairly regular. ------------- TTC#1: Jan 07 Aug 08: Lap found and excised Stage 3 Endo Nov 08: 2nd lap clear - given OK to TTC after next AF |

I was going to say i didn't think endo affected ovulation PCOS would affect ovulation. I have stage 3 endo and got horrible pains (I still get them) at ov time and when AF arrives. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

Yup - PAIN and lots of it!!! I've always suspected endo as I've always had really heavy, painful periods with lots of clots. Like mummy_becks I also got Ov pain. There were other things like painful BM around AF and painful sex, gas, bloating, consitpation followed by diarrhoea etc etc. ------------- TTC#1: Jan 07 Aug 08: Lap found and excised Stage 3 Endo Nov 08: 2nd lap clear - given OK to TTC after next AF |

Sorry to hear it's taking a while. It took us 17 cycles to get Hannah. As frustrating as it was, I didn't even click that anything could be wrong, I just thought it was normal. But when I saw my GP to get my pregnancy confirmed she was shocked that it had taken so long. She said that at my age (just turned 26) that it's "normal" to take up to 12 months, but she'd take me on from 6 months for CD3 and 21 blood tests, then at 12 months she'd do further testing. So I guess I know for next time! So long story short, it can't hurt to see your GP

Thanks Char, thats good to know. I just met a lovely new female doctor at our centre, so maybe I'll check in with her. CD1 today, so maybe we could look at bloods this month. What do they test for? Mummy-Becks - you're right, I was thinking of PCOS! Emily - wow, I hope you get some relief from that! PCOS could be one of the problems if you aren't ovulating. they tet from estrogen and progesterone levels. I had mine done as random ones (I had no idea what cycle day I was on) and as I already knew my progresterone levels were low. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |
