I just wanted to see if anyone else has done this method of pain relief and what their experiences were. And to inform everyone else of a great way to birth!
I found out about it with my first boy 2 weeks before giving birth but i got alot out of Hypnobirthing.
Due to low platelet levels, pain relief was out of the question so i tried Hypnobirthing.
I had an amazing labour, very relaxed and easy. The
actual birth wasnt so fun, because i hadn't practiced enough and my midwife didnt understand that she wasnt to interfere and told me to push (your supposed to breath the baby down, this works so much better). When you are hypnotized you are very susceptible to suggestion so make sure everyone supports your decision
The fact that i had a 9lb 10 baby didnt help either.
When i found out about number 2 i wanted to really test it so i practised early, got my partner involved and informed my midwife better.
It was magical. 3 hours in total, only 5 natural pushes (your body does it for you while your breathing) and she was another hefty 9lb 2 baby! The midwives were in awe.
I seriously recommend this to anyone searching for a different way of controlling the discomfort of labour. It brings you closer to your unborn baby and makes your partner an integral part of the birth.

Wow, thanks for this, I was talking to DH the other day about our possible' No2, and questioned whether this would work for me. It's made me more keen to research if we do end up with a second bub.
Where did you find out about it?

Thanks Alianasmummy - your post is great timing as I am just looking into this at the mo having heard (second hand) about a friend trying it with her wee boy's birth.
So far I'm only hearing good things, so am keen to give it a go. DH is a little skeptical (he hasn't read anything about it yet, and I am crap at explaining) but seeing as I'm the one who's got to do it .. I'm pretty sure he will go along with whatever I say

Sounds pretty good Alianasmummy - interesting that you only had two weeks to practice the first time round, as I was looking into this but thought it would be too late for me.
Did you have to do classes or is it completely self-taught?

Hi Alianasmummy - I am doing a course at present and looking forward to a very different birth from my first (which was 40 hours long).
Next week is our last session - but the instructor is fantastic and it's quite amazing to learn what you can do with your mind and how this is only going to help towards a pain free birth.
I highly recommend looking into it for anyone that wants drug free and possibly pain free birthing.

I found out about it from my antenatal class at Birthcare in Auckland. i was too late for classes so i just practiced breathing and relaxing at home.
You dont get as much out of it compared to doing it from 3 months but just changing your view on birthing and learning to relax and breath properly you can definitely improve your experience 10 fold.
For number 2 i had moved to Golden Bay and there are no classes here so i did it with my partner at home. My partner was also skeptical but was committed to helping me do it and i proved to him how great it is.
I am seriously considering becoming a midwife and specializing in it as i hear of so many horror birth stories and most of the time it was completely avoidable.
I just read the book and listened to the cd. You can get it from whitcouls or go to www.hypnobirthing.co.nz. They have all the links you will need.

Am I right in thinking it might be easier with your second so you would have something to compare it to?

My friend in Aussie had a baby 6 months ago and used the hypnobirthing method. It really does sound amazing. It's a lot to do with education, and helping you understand exactly what will happen every step of the way.
My friend had a 17 hour labour, with no pain relief, and desribes it as the most amazing empowering experience ever (even better than skydiving!!)
I think I will want to know that gas and air is close on hand if I need it though *lol*

Thanks Alianasmummy. I'm reading a book about hypnobirthing at the moment, and it all makes so much sense. I'm not in the position to be paying for the classes, so thanks for the info about Whitcoulls and the website.
