Okay so I made it through the whole buying maternity clothing but now I'm starting to think about tops suitable for breastfeeding.

My 2 cents worth is don't make the mistakes I made... 1) those bf singlets with the flip top are just bulky and useless if you have got big boobs and need to wear a bra too. the ones from farmers stain with breastmilk leakage - the last thing you need is clothes you can't put straight in the wash 2) don't buy button open tops or cross over tops thinking you can just pop a boob out - they are too cold for this time of the year and you end up with too much skin on display 3)don't buy tops a bigger size than you normally wear unless you have put on heaps of weight - they will just be big tents in a couple of weeks. Most proper bf tops are really expensive and not worth the money IMO I'm finding it best to wear a normal singlet under a normal top - then pull the top up and the singlet down - that way your flabby mummy tummy is covered up and your top is there to hide most of your boob. KMart have some lovely BF tops with nice gathers to hid the jelly belly. Other than that I normally wear either a Farmers BF singlet under another top or just a loose top.

I spent $50 on a 'proper' bfing top which was made out of such flimsy material that it showed every bump of back fat. If it had been a normal top I would never have paid that much for it. Anyway it was a crossover one with a singlet with side openings underneath (the only thing I could find to work with my large boobs) and everytime I wore it and carried Rowan her weight dragged it down at front so you could see the bra underneath. Totally not worth it.
Best BFing tops I have: Loose teeshirts that you can lift up on one side and not show your whole belly. And some long sleeved crossover tops from Farmers (they aren't breastfeeding ones) which you can pull down to get the boob out. At this time of year I'd recommend a cardi jacket to keep you warm while you feed but that's it. Specifically made BFing tops are expensive and not worth it IMHO. -------------

I just used tops I already had with deep v's or singlets that way I could just pop one breast out (although it was summer lol).
Another thing you can use to cover post baby tum is the bellyband (if you used one during the pregnancy). I used to just lift my top but have the belly band over my tum tum. But DJ's advice of .. I'm finding it best to wear a normal singlet under a normal top - then pull the top up and the singlet down - that way your flabby mummy tummy is covered up and your top is there to hide most of your boob. I started off just waring normal tops but got sick of the belly hanging out. In the end if bought a couple of bf singlets off TM and wore these under a normal top. I found these really good but then I am not very big (about a D cup - well now I am but I wasn't much bigger while bf) and had no leakage ------------- Lindsey

I just used normal tops that were easy to lift up (or pull down without stretching) and I used a belly-band to hide my baby flab. I had a breastfeeding top which I hated using, I just liked easy singlet tops and t-shirts and my normal stuff. Things that gather under the boobs are hard to get around unless they are quite wide at the top. ------------- Chloe (4 years) and Oliver (3 years). |

Wow thanks for such excellent replies. I am so glad to hear about the views on bf tops as I had been looking and thinking 'gosh they are expensive'. I think I will at least start with the idea of trying out singlet underneither and pull up top on top.

I picked up a nice simple BF from Breastmates, and it was really handy during the first 6 weeks - until summer begun to hit in. I love my Farmers BF singlets (in Black) and generally used them at night, but during winter would be a good idea too, and the breast pads I had stayed close too.
These days I'm like the others and layer up with 2 tops, either a singlet top tor a deep v-neck top that I can push down under the boob, and then just pull up the outer shirt - just watch out for cold hands -------------

well im not feeding anymore but i loved my singlets from farmers, except for the stain issue, i was forever soaking them. and being a summer baby i lived in them for the 1st 3-4 months.
Then i found the Discreet breastfeeding tops, that are made here in nz and managed to get a couple of really nice ones for $20 each. Bargan. Check out their website or trade me cos i think they are still doing that special. |

I love the BF singlets for wearing to bed under my pjs. It means I don't have to wear a bra as definately still need to have breastpads in place.
