It may be that I just like having something to worry over but I think my 4 week old might have a hearing problem.
While I have seen him startle at extremely loud noise he doesn't seem to react to voices or other noises. I tried clapping my hands behind his head were he couldn't see me and there was no reaction. Is this normal or should I take him to the doctors. |

It's hard to say, but my cousin's little boy was the same at 8 weeks old (according to doctors, she wasn't too concerned)
He's just fine, now that he's 3 months  -------------

My wee boy was a wee bit like that and I did a wee quiet panic to myself but he did improve but even now he will ignore some things.
As a 4-8 week old he would startle at the weirdest sounds but I could clap, drop things, the dog would go nuts barking beside the basinett and he wouldn't even bat an eyelid or wake up. I think some babies are just like that - maybe boys practising selective hearing already  -------------

UGH, Samantha used to do the same thing to me! I used to clap my hands or make loud noises to the sides and back of her and she wouldn't even react! Little wench had me convinced for a while that she had a hearing problem!

I was worried with Maddi as well at the same age. Our hose was always so noise and DD#1 would alway be making sudden noises and Maddi never seemed to notice. I tried clapping to see if she would react and she never seemed to respond.
I think she was just a really good sleeper and so used to sudden noises shed learned to ignore them. It did have me really worried for a few weeks though.Her hearing seems totally fine now -------------

I wouldn't worry for another 1-2 months yet. Jack used to fall asleep to gunfire when Dh was playing Xbox, and often the only way I could get him to sleep was in the kitchen with me while the washing machine, microwave and dryer were going and I was doing dishes very loudly.
You'll probably notice in a few weeks that bubs knows your voice and that will probably give an indication on whether or not there are hearing issues (if bubs doesn't respond to you etc). |

Chloe never seemed to notice me clapping at that age, and allsorts, to try and attract her attention. She did startle at loud noises though. It was around 2-3 months (can't remember anymore sorry) that she started to "notice" other noises. I wouldn't get worried yet. ------------- Chloe (4 years) and Oliver (3 years). |

LOL I think quite a few mums have thought this about their bub. I was exactly the same about Gabs, I got so paranoid that she couldn't hear, cos she would not react to just about anything, I could drop something on the floor and she wouldn't even blink. I started to think there was something wrong too.
She is perfectly fine though. One day a friend of mine was holding her and I spoke and she turned towards me and as she got older then she started to react to more things like the sound of my voice and she turns her head to the TV when there is music on or when the ads are on sometimes. Try not to worry about it unless your bubba still isn't reacting in another couple of months. ------------- http://lilypie.com">
