I am studying relaxation massage,and when I finish my studies want to specialise in pregnancy massage.
I would love to know,if you would consider using a massage therapist who specialises in dealing with pregnant ladies? What kind of services would like to see being offered? Do you think day time hours are better than night time hours? When I get up an running and see how much business I will get,I would love to have on hand a creche as well for mums who don't have someone to watch their kids for them during the day while they have a massage. Do you think that kind of service is neede as well? I have thought about incorporating a spa,so you can have a soak before the massage. Do you think you would use this service if the temp of the spa was set at the safe temp for pregnant mothers,like the same temp as what you would have when having a bath. I think it's a good idea, I think daytime hours would be fine with maybe a late night on thursdays or something.
I read a lot about using massage during labour and some people hire someone trained to do it during labour so that might be something to think about and also teaching labour partners about pregnancy massage as well as useful massage during labour would be really great. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

After the week iv'e had with a really sore back I would kill for this, and a spa too!! Maybe do a late night and appts on sat mornings or every second sat. Also the creche sounds like a great idea too. Hope you are in Tauranga! Good luck with it all, sounds great. -------------

I had a massage late in my pg and it was great. I just used a lady that I had been going to for years. Personally I wouldn't use a spa but them I am not a 'soaker'. A creche would be good for Mums who allready have kids or as others have mentioned a late night and/or Saturdays ------------- Lindsey

Great idea - there needs to be more of these places around!
I got a 'mum to be' pamper package just last week here in Chch at Gloucester Cottage http://www.gloucestercottage.co.nz - Gloucester Cottage Link . First I had a long bath (real nice deep old fashioned bath) with candles etc to set the scene and lavender in the bath, then a back massage in a special massage table with a hole cut in the middle for your belly go in while you lie on your tummy - it was so nice to be able to lie down!! It was a good 30-45min massage on shoulders, back and then they had a lazy boy chair where I sat and read magazines (at my leisure) while they bought me a hot drink, with a yummy cake and biscuit!) Such pampering - I'm gonna so do it again! (It cost me $85 on special and the only thing I would change is the length of time in the bath as it got quite hot and I ended up being in it for almost an hour instead of 25-30mins - so I just sat on the side for a bit) ------------- http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">  DD#1 Sept 08 DD#2 Oct 09 |

oh - also, if it were me opening something similar - I would make sure that there are times during the day and at least a couple of late nights and maybe a weekend day for people like me who work during the day/week!

Yes I would prefer someone specializing in pregnancy massage. Day would be good when you have finished working, otherwise weekends would be good. I would probably only use the spa/massage when I was pregnant and not after as now that our baby is here, we can not afford the luxury of massages, but if you could than the creche is a fantastic idea. So funny that some of you asked where. I will be based in Tauranga,but won't be finished my training till end of November. So sorry if that will miss out some of you. Your suggestions and experiences shared are great to go by. I will probably wait to do the creche thing,till I am up and running for a while and have some money behind me. I've been having fortnightly massages since about 20 weeks and they've been so lovely. I was lucky, DH insisted on it and because I worked until 38 weeks it really made a difference. I even had a visit to the hospital physio a few weeks ago and she commented on how flexible I am still (can stil touch my toes!!) and she thinks it was because of the massages. Anyway, I have to say that I'm not a fan of the belly cushions (pregnancy ones that allow you to lay on your tummy) and neither is the wee one inside me from what I felt afterwards. Instead my therapist had me lay on my side and then we changed sides halfway through. Had a tri pillow between my legs and long body pillow alongside me. Sometimes I sit on a stool leaning into the table if she needs to do more on my back. I found her in the yellow pages and I had only looked for those who listed pregnancy massage in their ads. I tend to prefer ones with websites which I can read more about them beforehand too. I usually had my massages at about 4 or 5pm after work and she does home visits if I need that. If you had a creche would you need to hire a qualified child carer when required?? It is a great idea though and I encourage all pregnant ladies to have massages during pregnancy if they can. Oh, and if I still haven't had a baby next week she is going to work on the pressure points in my legs which are supposed to encourage labour! Thanks so much Maysey for your detailed explanation of your experience with pregnancy massage.
All your suggestions are great ideas. I think at first I will probably do some appointment at night or on weekends for people who don't have tempory care for their children during their session and some during the day for people who can do those sessions too. I have thought alot about the whole 'lying on your tummy' situation and have thought I would rather not do that. The massage chairs are great for pregnancy massage, allows the pregnant mum to sit facing forwards, and still allows the therapist to access the back and shoulders.

I think it's a wonderful idea, especially coupled with the spa.
What an amazing christmas/birthday/jsut because gift to give to a pregnant friend - a voucher for a treatment. Love the idea of manicure/pedicure too - helps you to still feel beautiful when you're huge LOL. |
