I am getting myself all in a tangle. We use fitteds and I have been wondering about pockets which everyone raves about. We bought our OSFA fitteds at the Parent and Child Show when I was about 13wks pg and we do like them. We were put off pockets partly becasue all the ones we saw were sized and didn't like the idea of having to buy more nappies later.

I have posted a few questions about DIY but am not sure if I make sized or OSFA pockets. I had a look at a few old threads and it seemed that some people had problems with leaks in OSFA pockets (the cover on our fitteds stops this).

I suppose I am really trialling pockets now so I know whether I want to use them when we end up having #2. But do I go for OSFA or sized? Does using sized work out expensive? How many do you have? How often do you wash? Do you keep the smaller ones?

So confused! What a ramble!!

I have mostly osfa pockets because I also didn't want to have to keep buying the next size up. I have bum genius and mommys touch, both I find really good but I do prefer the bum genius, better fit and design. Haven't really had any issues with leaks, only happens if he has been in one for a bit too long or the occasional random leak (but then he can also leak of sposies sometimes).
Some nappy shops do hire packs so you can try before you buy, have a look at mums and bubs, they are in christchurch but they sell to the whole of nz.

I prefer sized nappies so you have a trimmer neater fit at each size. I also think that 'one-size' can be a bit of a false economy because although you might only have to use one size of nappy for your baby I haven't known anyone who's been able to use them on a second baby because they are worn out by then. Whereas sized nappies might cost you more for the first child each size will be worn less and therefor be in better condition to be used on a second or third baby. Or, you can resell your smaller sizes to find the purchase of your bigger sizes (like I did). It's totally up to you what you decide, I think it comes down to personal choice.

Yeah I agree with Vic. I'm not a great fan of OSFA as I have babies with chubby thighs so there is no way Hannah would have fit a one size as a toddler and it looks like Greer will be much the same.

We have about 12 medium pockets, plus a handful of prefolds and covers which is enough for about 3 days between washes. And its only as expensive as you make it - if you keep an eye out for hardly used second hand nappies on here and TM, then they are only $10-20 (ish) each.

As for small nappies, I had used cloth flats with Hannah so didnt have many MCN to reuse so got a hire kit of NB/smalls to use with Greer. But am now reusing the mediums and will do the same with all our larges. So no I dont think it works out too expensive.

I like having a mixture of sized and one size. Selling off each size is really easy on trademe or even on here. I think it just ensures a better overall fit

i've had OSFA naps and found they didn't fit charli very well....i prefer sized nappies.

as aimee said, they are only as costly as you want them to be. there's so many different brands out there and they vary in cost. trademe is a great place to get nappies and remember...you can always sell them when they get too small and use the money to buy the next size up.

if it were me i would make a sized pocket - it would be easier for your first to make than a one size and would give you a good chance to see what you think of them.

That's what I plan to do Bizzy, thanks. I had a chat to DH and although I don't think he is fussed on sized nappies and think our OSFA fitteds will be OK for the next 2 kids as well (the lady who sold them to us told us that 4 grandkids had used the same nappies), he has agreed for me to buy some fabric and make some lge pockets to try on Jack now. That's after I have just told him we need to start sticking to a budget and spending less!!

ETA: sorry forgot to thank you ladies for your feedback, it helped make my decision. If we like pockets I will make some more for #2 and use with our fitteds
