I have just recently pulled out my babys bassinette in preparation for the birth of our new baby later in the year and after being packed away for most of a year it has a kind of musty smell to it. I have tried washing it and airing it out but can't get rid of the smell. It has been used a few times as it was passed onto us from a friend and I am wondering if anyone knows of the best way to clean it and get rid of the smell? I am unsure if I should still use it or if it would be safer to just get a new one?

i wouldnt use the mattress again, but keep airing it out and get it in the sun for a while and see if that helps.

Yeah I agree with Bizzy, I wouldnt use the mattress. Keep airing it lots and maybe wash it again with something different? You might be able to buy something that helps get rid of musty smells.

What is the outer part of the bassinette made of (i.e. is it wicker or canvas cloth etc).

I agree that you should replace the mattress.  We were given a bassinette and a moses basket both had only been used once but we replaced the mattresses for both.  The square bassinette mattress cost us $40 and the oval one cost us $25.

I agree with the others about changing the mattress.
And also depending on if you really like the bassinett, maybe just get another one. You can get brand new ones for as low as $120. I do know that is a lot of money for some people, but maybe put something aside each week?
But if you do like it, a new mattress would be cheaper.

I would just keep airing it. If it's a fabric outer, wash it with Lux flakes as they are really gentle (what you should wash all wool in) and have a nice scent about them too. That's what I did for ours and it turned out to smell quite nice (unitl of course babies chuck all over them )

If baby isn't going to be here for a while you could use febreeze in conjunction with out in the sun, not sure bout the mattress, personal decision as to wether or not to use it or not

I agree with the others to replace the mattress especially it has been in storage for awhile or you can pick up a really nice one off trademe for under $100. I got one off trademe for $45 that had only been used for about 3 months.

Ok here is a question. I have a basinette that we bought when DD was born. Afetr 4 months I put it under her cot and then about 3- 4 months ago we put it in a large bag and put it in Grarden shed as we were running out of room. I told Dh to bring it back in...I dont know if it still ok to use? I will wash it ofcourse!!??

Roksana I would check it for mould/musty smells and go from there. If it looks fine and it comes up good once washed then I would be happy with that.

I agree with bizzy, stick it out in the sunshine as much as poss, it always works for us when Spencer has a stinky nappy (one that still smells after the wash, I don't just stick his dirty nappies in the sun...lol)

I agree with what the others have said. We used a really old bassient from my grandmothers and after some airing and a new mattress it was fine.  bassinetts are so expensive for the short time they are used.
