Hi Guys,

Can someone fill us first timers in on the whole tax payment thing? I can't find detailed info online (just that you might get a payment).

How does it all work? I know about Maternity pay and the rules about that but what's up with the IRD thing? Are we all eligible for the payment or does it work on earnings etc? Where can we find out if we can get it? When do you get it?

Cheers

Dana

Go to the department of labour website www.dol.govt.nz and follow the parental leave link. It has a calculator to work out if it is better to have PPL or to get the parental tax credit. It is all dependent on how many hours you work, the length of time you have worked for the employer, and the your average weekly income.

Also depending on your income and your partner's income, you may also be eligible for Working For Families tax credits and an accomodation supplement once the baby is born. Go to www.workingforfamilies.govt.nz to work your entitlements.

Is there a threshold for the one off sum?  I think I am heading that way unless I can convince my employer to say I work 10 hrs (I do 7 for one and 8.5 as self employed so kinda screwed).

Yep is says that it depends on your family income but it doesn't say how much. I am in the same boat nikki, I just can't seem to manage to do 10 hours a week.

Wow, talking to dol is like pulling teeth.  I am totally screwed as I work between 2 jobs...unless I very quickly negotiate with my employer to become self emplyed but I would basically have to do that today!  Not going to happen....or I pick up another1.5 hours in my self employed job.....yuk!!!!  Mind you...how do they know how many hours I do there???? hmmmmm something to try and work out.  Of course it all turns to custard if we move.

As for the parental tax credit....they dont know the threshold either....said to ring IRD.....well I will have to try that another day.

Typical! We earn too much so don't get working for families. PPL is it for us. This bugs me as we work full time and pay our taxes just to get scr*wed when we need help the most. I would love to stay at home for more than 14 weeks but don't have a choice unless we want to live on 2 minute noodles and weetbix for the rest of our lives.
