Hi
I am 23 weeks pregnant and have been sleeping on my side with a pillow between my legs for a few weeks now - I am normally a back sleeper.

This has been fine but just this week I have been waking up with really bad lower back pain, usually on one side. It is very hard to relieve and on Saturday night I was up in the middle of the night doing yoga strectches the pain was so intense!

I suspect I dont have quite the right position but can any one help with other ideas for sleeping or suggest what I might be doing wrong. Really dont need this pain for the next 3.5 months!
thanks

Oh I feel your pain, Im getting this REAL bad now. I sleep with a tri pillow, one bit between my legs and one bit under my tummy.
I find that if you put a pillow behind your back it will help support it, so get you DH to do wedge it right under your back so when you lean ur resting on the pillow, if u get what I mean?

I know its really sucks And it just gets worse as you get further along Im sad to say, but a pillow behind u aswell as under your bump should help a lot

Similar problems but i have usually always been a tummy sleeper and occasional back sleeper. i have found that since I got pregnant i have been unable to sleep on my back at all due to lower back pain.

Also found that as my pregnancy progresses the number of pillows is increasing.

Started off with one which i would use so that I was half on my side/half tummy. Added a second pillow and have that wedged at my back to support it and now sleep on fully my side with the first pillow supporting my tummy

Have added a third pillow in the last couple of weeks which goes between my knees now that all of my ligaments have started moving.

Needless to say DH has taken to sleeping in the spareroom during the working week so he can get a decent nights sleep as my restlessness and all of the pillows are pushing him out of bed and keeping him awake. But he still comes in each morning and climbs in to bed with me to give me a cuddle and say good morning to bubs and feel her moving before we get up and get ready to go to work.

Have to admit that the nights he is sleeping in another bed I am much more comfortable, can stretch out and sleep better. Even though we have a good bed that is supposed to prevent roll together I reckon it still does occur and this has been impacting on my back and joints despite all of the pillows.

Oh geez, I remember that pain very well.

Sleeping on the couch is surprisingly more comfy than a bed - well that was what I found.

Also next time if I get that pain again I'm going to go to my chiro and make sure everything is where it should be. I've seen a chiro this year and I really should have during pregnancy. He could have really reduced the amount of pain I was in as I had an uneven pelvis which would have caused my grief.

Make sure when you have the pillows between your legs that your knees line up as much as possible (so your hips are as straight as possible)....really hard, I know, and the likelihood of them staying that way overnight is almost non-existant! However, apparently having your legs misaligned can put extra stress on your lower back.

You can also get small wedge-pillows from places like the baby factory or spotlight, and that can be more comfy under your bump.

Don't mean to be a grump, but the pain only gets worse! Lol Your MW can refer you to a maternity physio (free), but I have found the osteopath is actually more helpful in getting rid of the pain I already have (rather than just reccommending better posture to prevent further pain).

thanks for your comments. I did suspect that it might come down to trial and error with pillow arrangement! The joys!

Also, what side are you lying on? It's best to lie on your left side rather than your right.

I used to sleep with 2 pillows down each side, and then when I developed carpal tunnel I couldn't use pillows for my head as I had to sleep with my arms up so there's always something that's a PITA!
