My DH is concerned about the effect of big cloth bots on babies/toddlers backs. Mainly big night time nappies. I find it's ok for Alex, as he is a tummy sleeper, but for Sophie who is still sleeping on her back it does look uncomfortable. Her night nappy is huge, and it does make her arch her back. I assume if she was uncomfortable she would let me know, so it must be ok, but DH is worried about the long term effects. What do you think? Could it lead to back problems later?

I've never heard of such problems Nicola and to be honest I haven't thought it about it until now. Leo's new night bottom is huge (as you've all seen in the pics!) but it doesn't seem to bother him at all. I'm the same as you and think that if it were a problem he'd let me know. Also, if you think back to when we were all in cloth it was bulky cotton squares, fluffies and plastic pants!! That must have been a lot more unfortable than what's on the market today.

Yes I was thinking that too Vic. I'm sure we all had huge cloth bots, and we don't all have back problems. I hadn't worried about it before either, until DH mentioned it. I'm sure it wil be fine, but did think it was worth thinking about.

I was worried about this too. Last night Livvy had quite a thick nappy and when I felt the curve of her back, I thought that it HAD to be uncomfortable or bad for her. I'm interested to see what others have to say about it.

I don't worry about it at all... babies are so flexi that I really can't see any problems long term... especially in the naps we wore as babies!!
But I don't have any scientific evidence to back this up

I forgot to add... DH was trying to prove his point to me, so he lay on the floor with 2 pillows under his bum, so show me how uncomfortable it would be!! He then told me to try it - I didn't!!

My kids get themselves into some really wacky positions when they sleep that I think would be really uncomfortable, but they wake up as bright and bouncy as ever, so I imagine the same would apply for big cloth bums. Like Nikki said, they're really bendy unlike most of us grownups!

Good point Mel! I often found my daughter pressed up against the side of her cot, or sleeping with your legs halfway up the bars!! lol Leo usually sleeps on his tummy with his legs tucked right up under him like a snail tucked into it's shell! It hardly looks comfortable to me

Alex sleeps like that too Vic... all tucked up, bum in the air. He looks like a big blue snail in his sleepsuit!!

Leo too as he wears a blue fleece sleepsuit over his DB night nappy. It got it from JK ($20) and it fits perfectly over his HUGE bottom

tell him that he would find it bloody uncomfy to spend months scrunched up, upside down pushing on someones pelvis but these babies do it happily!!

I did find when Mercedes was refluxing badly I had to elevate the head of the cot more to compensate for her big butt, but as for their backs/joints, they have far les cartilage (sp) than us so their joints are way more flexi, so I don't really worry too much about that.
