Wow im now really worried about how much food Kylah eats. Does this worrying thing ever end?
When Kylah gets up in the morning, she has a 200ml bottle first off because shes crying so much if i dont get it to her mouth fast enogh she will let rip lol. She has barely any food for breakfast, maybe a couple of teaspoons if that.
Morning tea she will have a rice cracker or two and around 100ml of her bottle. Lunch she will eat half a small can of baby food and probaly either 100 or 150ml of bottle.
Afternoon tea, a couple of fish fingers and some bottle.
Dinner, maybe she will eat a whole can, not often though and 150ml of bottle.
Is that enough? Is that why shes so small because she doesnt eat enough? God im freaking out i havent been giving her enough but she just throws the food away that i give her?
Im at work now, but im going to the supermarket tomorrow to try and get a whole new variety of foods for her to try. I just get there and i dont know what she can have and what she cant, its normally if i see another baby with something i will go get it for her lol. Sound silly?

Ok, well firstly, if she is happy, and having wet and dirty nappies, and putting on weight, then she is getting enough. Every child is different, so Kylah may just be a small eater.
I would try offering her new foods, even if she doesn't eat more, it's good for her to eat a variety of foods.
A few suggestions: cheese (grated or sliced), grapes, banana (ok, any fruit), peas, raisins, mini sammies (maybe marmite or jam) pasta, small pieces of meat.
She may like little finger foods that she can feed herself. I know it can be messy, but just put her in her highchair with a big towel around her and let her go for it!!
And finally, don't worry!! I'm sure she is just fine!!

But shes so small?? Shes 9 months old and still in 00 clothes! I feel like its my fault shes not getting bigger. She hasnt been weighed in forever so im not sure what she weighs.
Can i give her cheese? and jam? Cool. Im going to give her heaps of stuff tomorrow and see how we get on. Im working all day today. She doesnt eat fruit at all unless its mashed up. She wont even pick apple up lol and she throws banana away! She likes manderin though..
I always put her in the hairchair with food lol.. it does go everywhere but its cool!

Daniel can still fit some of his 3-6 month clothes so don't worry about her size! lol
My first thought was that maybe you should cut out one of the bottles. I counted 5 bottles? Maybe reduce that down to 4. I think shes filling up on milk which is why she doesn't want much food.

Oh really?? Ok sounds good. Maybe i should try giving her breakfast first in the morning? But she gets so hysterical for her bottle in the morning its quite hard to do..
Yeah she does have a few bottles lol. Im going to try a whole new routine tomorrow i think.

Ella was only just starting to eat solids at Kylah's age.
She'd point blank refused them up until then!
You can start giving her food before bottles now, but don't worry if you have to give her her milk first in the mornings. They do most of their growing overnight and mine were always ravenous as soon as they woke up too.
Also, maybe give it about an hour or so between offering her milk and solids (or vice versa). If you offer them straight after she may be too full of one to want the other. Of course, if she's hungry sooner you don't need to wait.
I'd try dropping one of her bottles too, maybe morning or afternoon tea? You may find that if she's having her solids first she'll be too full anyway.
As Nicola said, as long as she's filling her nappies and seems happy and full of beans I don't think you need to worry about her being small. Like Daniel, Ella was still wearing some of her 3-6 months stuff at that age, she's always been small too.
Good luck with the new routine!

Ok so i just googled finger foods. Can someone tell me if this stuff is ok to give her.
Wedges? The potoo ones that you cook like chips.
Cheerios. Are the meaning the cereal or the baby savalois?
Cooked meat chopped up to pea size peices is that so she doesnt choke? But wouldnt small peices make her choke?
Mixed veges, just steam them and let her pick them up and eat them?
Pasta? Same way as above? Do i cut it up tiny too?
Dried fruit?
Cooked broccolli heads, do i chop this up tiny or give it to her in little heads?
When i chop up fruit to give her, do i give it in big peices or small? I first thought big peices so she could bite bits off, but she doesnt toch it. If i cut it up pea size wouldnt she just swallow it whole?

hey kylahsmum, there is a thread about the solids before milk change that i found quite helpful, I am still getting my head around this whole thing! T was the same in the mornings for bottle but is fine with getting his breakfast as long as it happens fast after he gets up! they say 600ml of formula now so i had to cut down to 3 bottles and now he is finally eating more food, he was like Kylah just half a tin equivalent at a time, now that there is less milk on offer he is eating better he would just drink milk all day if he could
the aria farm meat chips are good for finger foods, T likes the lamb ones, I personally do strips of food he holds them and eats them himself. pasta i give whole he likes the tortellini fresh pasta, not sure if im meant to give that yet but he loves it,
i think they mean cheerios the cereal, although Thomas loves sausages and i guess they are the same, i do the same strip thing or if in a rush pop in pieces. dried fruit you put in boiling water to soften i havent tried that one yet

I give all Spencers finger as pieces he can hold onto.
I give him strips of chicken/beef normally that have been roasted that way they are quite easy for him to eat.
You could try spreading stuff on the rice crackers, pumpkin is good.
Toast fingers with jam.
Give the broccoli as little heads so that they are easy for her to pick up.
They don't choke on smaller bits though, Spencer eats sultanas and peas etc without any trouble.
Cornflakes and rice crispies are good as finger foods too.
I would also cut out one of the bottles. Spencer dropped the mid morning one on his own when I started giving solids first and then I dropped his afternoon one when he was messing around with eating dinner.
And Spencer is still is some 3-6 month stuff but he is absolutely fine and kylah looked as big as him and she is two months younger. Remember she only started off small and she is probably tracking along the right line just fine, she certainly didn't look underfed to me.

Are the aria chips full of preservatives and stuff? I dont like the idea of over processed food.
Tom doesnt get much fingerfood as I am still thinking up things. For reference, cold mashed veges, rolled into sausages and baked DOESNT harden up enough to allow them to eat without mashing it all over everything ...sounded good.
We have toast, vegemite sammies (must venture away from vegemite), cheese (not too keen on this) mandarin segments, banana, apple in fresh food feeder, pasta spirals (sometimes with sauce on them).
As far as what she can and cant have, my understanding is that she cant have honey, milk as a replacement for formula, nuts and egg white but anything else is pretty much fair game. Just use common sense. dont give her macdonalds etc.
As for choking, I think if it is small and HARD then it is a choking risk. If it is small and soft they gag and bring it back up. At least that is what Tom does.

they are YUM! i just give them to him once a week or so, i have made corn fritters (edmonds recipe) without the egg white which he loved, going to try some mini muffins today too.
i was really nervous the first time feeding egg, peanut butter etc but he is fine thank goodness!
wish T would eat mandarins he spits them out! and pretty much eats anything else!
he quite likes raisins good source of iron too apparently i was worried about those too, such a different ball game when its your own child
im not keen on processed foods either but did wonder about some of those muesli bar type things when the time comes, the baked fruit sticks seem healthy enough, does anyone know when i could give him one of those? would be good to have in the bag for just in case...

I was thinking of making corn fritters, or pikelets.
Simone, with the mandarins, I have to break each segment in half as my gummy wonder has no teeth and cant break through the skin of the mandarin so he just mushes it and it slips back out. If I break it he can eat it.
|

Date Posted: 16 May 2008 at 9:53am
i was wondering about pikelets too, they would love them im sure. my little alison holst book has french toast as a finger food too, thought i might try that for lunch
must be somethign with thomas's, this one has no teeth either, no sign of them either to be honest, i take the skin off as well and try popping it in his mouth but he jams it shut once he knows its mandarins will keep persevering he may change his mind they reckon 10 goes

What about baby yoghurts? Cooper loves them.
I agree with Stacey about the bottles, I'd drop maybe the afternoon one. I think the morning one is important especially if they've been asleep for 11-12hrs, they need to get some fluids into them. Once you've given her that bottle wait an hour or so then give her breakfast... that's what I do anyway seems to work.

Simone - we gave those baked fruit sticks from about 8 months I think
We go through tons of yoghurt in our house now too. We just buy the big tubs (1L ones), it's way cheaper than the little ones
|
Posted By: .Mel
Date Posted: 16 May 2008 at 10:20am
The Fresh n Fruity ones are $2 more than the Petit ones, so I just buy them now. He loves them regardless of the price though.
I'm very conscious of the first bottle thing, its the first thing I do when we get up. I know that I get a drink when I get up so I'm aware that he probably needs one too. He scoffs it down too.

I'm a bit different with Daniels first bottle of the morning. If he's slept through and hasn't woken at all then I give him half of his bottle, wait 20-30mins, feed him breakfast and then wait and give him the remainder of his bottle.. makes for a happy boy.

hhmm good thinking ladies, thomas wont eat breakfast if he has had a bottle so maybe doing half might be something to try
its all trial and error and hit and miss!
the petit miam pack of 6 was 5$ thats great if i can give him normal yoghurt! doesnt matter about pulp? ie passionfruit seeds/berry seeds etc? thinking of getting an easy yo and making it myself wonder if it actually works out cheaper

All good suggestions. I did want to add that by Cheerio's they will be meaning the little red sausages. Sam loves these as a treat with the skin removed!! I definitley recommend the Aria farm beef/chicken/lamb strips. Sam loves them too!
Also, don't worry. Kylah looks very healthy and happy. She would be a fussy, crying baby if she wasn't getting enough to eat. Sam is over a year now and only recently went into size 0 clothes. She still fits the 3-6 (00) months except for things that don't go over the cloth butt! Some of our girls are just wee things

Lucas LOVES the kiddy yoghurts ...espesh choc flavour. Plunket nurse told me this was fine to give him DESPITE it being choc flavoured.
Now as for wee Kylah and her eating, darl I wouldn't be too worried. I worried myself sick over Lucas' eating - or should I say lack thereof?
Even nowadays he just picks at some foods. He wasn't even properly taking solids till 10 months of age, and even now he's still eating the 4-6month pureed jars for his veges and custard. Have you tried Kylah on the Vanilla Watties Baby Custard? Lucas HAS to have that every morning for breakfast otherwise its all downhill from there.
At current he is still a fussy eater, although he's always been a heavy boy so no-one ever believed we were having problems with his solids. The last few days he's only eaten a jar a day ...every meal time seems to be hit and miss atm (damn teeth).
So snacks that have been a winner with us ...
CHEESE, either cut up lil blocks, slices (I find best)...grated would be good too. Colby is best option. And processed cheese slices are fine to give (can work out cheaper too).
Another option for cheese is Dairy Pops ...you should find them in the dairy section of your supermarket, they are little cheese sticks for kids, with added calcium and vitamins.
Marmite sandwiches, they say not to give brown or grainy bread when they're young, so try and stick with white. If your wanting to add more fibre into her diet you can always go for the loaves with high fibre.
Oven Chips/Wedges and even the vegetable fritters or hash browns in your frozens section of supermarket. The vegetable fritters/patties we eat are YUM, they're called 'Birds Eye Bubbly 'N' Squeek'. A little rectangular yellow box with 8 patties in it. Can't recommend them highly enough and they're mushy so if she has no teeth it's not an issue.
Kiddy Yoghurt's/Adult Yoghurt's or the yoghurt's in baby food section are all good.
Healtheries Rice Wheels (found in chip section) ...no added flavours and colourings and HEALTHY. (might need teeth for them)
Superwine or Arrowroot biscuits. Rice crackers and anything thats corn or rice based in the cracker section.
Frozen Veges steamed/cooked in the microwave. Can get lots of diff combinations in the freezer section. Lucas doesn't like veges in any other form than the 4-6month pureed jars or fritters.
Fruit ...I wish I could help you here but my boy won't touch the stuff no matter what form.
Cooked up pasta is good, even macaroni cheese. Lucas loves anything cheese lol.
Main things to stay away from are Peanut (I'm sure peanut butter is included as it can stick to the roof of your mouth and allergy wise it shouldn't be introduced before a certain age?) ...Eggs I think you have to wait until after 9 or 12 months, Honey is a No no, Mum claims raisins are a no-go too due to choking hazards and sugar content (apparently they rot their teeth?)...
I'm sure Kylah should have had a 9 month Plunket check or at least be due for some kind of check where they'll measure and weigh her and talk about solids etc. Plunket have finger food charts with pictures of all the foods she can eat at what age. They were really handy. I'd suggest making an appointment with a nurse, afterall they are trained in this area. Karitane nurses are really helpful too.
Hmm if I think of anything else I'll let you know, but bottom line don't worry too much, if she's hungry she will eat. But I agree with the ladies above who've mentioned maybe dropping a bottle in the day ...and if she's happy, healthy and not visibly losing weight etc and has plenty of wet & dirty nappies - I'm sure she is fine. Judging by photos she looks beautiful and healthy so I wouldn't be too worried.

Wow just realised I wrote you an essay above, opps. Just a topic so close to home for me.
And I know the ladies above have mentioned cheerios, I wouldn't suggest the cereal cheerios as they are small and hard - so a choking hazard. And as for the sausages they are not recommended for kids under a certain age, it was in the news not so long ago, they can pick up something from them. I wouldn't feed them to Lucas. I'll go and google it and see what I find.

We do bottle then solids an hour later first thing in the morning. The rest of the day is solids then bottle. All up she probably has 600ml during the course of the day. I think plunket recommends between 600 and 700mls at this age. Check with plunket first though (as i might be remembering wrong).
You could always make up the right amount of water for bottles so you give her exactly what formula she needs for the day. Then either do solids then bottle or perhaps do what someone else suggested, sandwich the bottle around the solids.
