hi ladies
ive got a mothers day lunch tommorow at a working mens club and i dont think ill be too comfortable breastfeeding, so im going to express milk and give him a bottle there.
ive expressed milk this week but jackson was due for a feed on the breast i expressed from and he was given the milk pretty much straight away. i also only managed to get about 50mls from one breast. im just wondering how much milk i should express for him? 100mls? i have no idea how much he usually drinks! hes a big boy so i assume more than most his age...
also, whens the best time to express? i dont want to empty a breast in case he needs to feed from it..

please help!

You should express after a feed preferably in the morning. You might not be able to get heaps of in one go if u dont regularly express. Also you probably wont be able to go for ages without him feeding off your boobs, they will be really sore and leaky!
If I was you, I would just take hime outside and feed him in the car! Saves the stress of having to have enough milk, and bother- having to get it heated etc etc, and discomfort!

Josh was drinking about 50-80ml a feed when he was that age i think (i had just started formula about then so im pretty sure thats how much we were making) Take another 50 ml after his next feed if you can to be on the safe side.

When I asked my midwife how much EBM to give she gave me this formula: take their weight (kg) x 180->200 (180min, 200max, if Jackson is big then I'd go for 200) which gives you the volume they should have in 24 hrs and then divide this by the number of feeds he would usually have in a day.

Eg, if he weighs 4kg and has 8 feeds a day you would go: 4x200=800, then 800/8=100ml per feed.

I hope that makes sense.

You may have to do it a few times throughout the day/night to get enough milk in total. I was told by a plunket lady that you should have enough milk again after about an hour but just make sure you express as soon as you can after he has fed and there should be enough ready by the next feed.

If it doesn't work out, then there's always the car like Kellz suggested (done this quite a bit myself) or they may have another room that's a bit more private for you to feed in. Hope you have a nice lunch. Good luck.

Chloe was taking about 60-100mL of EBM at that stage, if I remember rightly. You can express more off and more quickly if you are really relaxed, warm etc. and have a snack and a huge glass of water just before expressing (helped me anyway)... or you could express after a nice hot shower, that helped me too. Also stopping the pump and having a 30 second break between letdowns made the next letdown come sooner.

Also, don't be afraid of running yourself out. Your body actually makes most of the milk baby needs as you feed him, so you could "half" empty a breast if you get my drift.
