Hi there laddies,
Well Dp has just gotten a new job on a farm about 35-40mins drive to Ashburton and 30mins drive to chch. I have had both my babies in Oamaru and im realy sceard. I dont no where to start with looking for a midwife or what hospital to go to. I was going to have a home birth but am unsure about how safe that will be now so far away from the hospital or if a mifwife would do it. The other thing is is that this is baby number 3 and the last labour was 1h 48mins and wasnt at the hospital long when i had him. Im realy sceared i wont make it to the hospital. Has anyone got any numbers i could ring to get some info and what hospital would i be best to go to. I have no idear. Thankyou so much

Hi, so I take it you're maybe near Rakaia or Dunsandel then?

I would personally go to CHCH womens to give birth due to how long your last labour was. If you get in touch with a GP they may be able to give you a list of m/w's, or ring the midwifery resource centre (in Chch whitepages) and ask them to refer you on. You will need to get onto it really quickly though seeing as you're 14wks already. Oh, and congrats!

You could use a midwife from Ashburton (they might not be as busy) there is a hospital in Ashburton but my understanding is that they don't have neonatal or do emergency c/s etc so I would say it depends on how comfortable you are being 1 1/2 away from chch womens. The other option if you don't want a hospital birth would be to go the lincoln birthing clinic that way you aren't too far from the hospital if you need to go there (which hopefully you won't) and it is closer to where you live and most likely where you will be transfered to even if you do birth at chch womens. You could even phone the lincoln clinic and use on of their midwifes as your lmc you just might have to drive to lincoln for your appointments.

I would defintely go to chch womens and then you can always transfer to lincoln after if you want to be closer to home. Just start ringing around midwives and see who is available otherwise you could go through the hosptial. All the midwives there are great that I have come across, the only downside of using hospital midwives is you wont have the same person each time and you arent guaranteed who will be at the birth.

We dont want to go to chch womens. We have had 2 drug fee normal births one 4.5 hours and 1 1hour 58mins and that was a water birth. I hate hospitals that are all medical altho i understand it is very good for a first baby to go to a place like that i have had no problems and unless something goes wrong in my pregnancy i would like to have the baby at home or in a small hospital or birthing center. Thankyou for all your help. I am going to ring around on monday and see what i can come up with. I have heard there are some birth center type places in chch :)

Yep Lincoln, burwood and Rangiora. I had planned to birth at Burwood but Spencer had other ideas.
Good luck, i'm sure you will find something that suits

Ashburton Hospital is really great. I know quite a few people who have birthed there and they have had great experiences. In Ashburton you can go with an independent midwife, my sister is due end of October and has an independent midwife. But you can also use the hospital midwives in conjunction with a GP (shared care I think it is called?). GP's work out of Allenton Medical Centre. Raewyn Tubb and Biddy Sheehan(sp) are the 2 indep mw that I have heard about.

In saying all that you will be closer to Chch or Lincoln than Ashburton anyway I would suspect.

Congrats and goodluck with what ever you decide

I think Lincoln would be a good option for you. I think its quite a nice small homely feeling hospital. My flatmate is giving birth there in July.
At least its wont be as far for you to come as coming right into town. My midwife booked me into St Georges and to Womans, that way if you need to be transfered to Womans for any reason you are already booked in just in case.
I think it is ok to go and have a look around at Lincoln to see it you will be comfortable there.
