My darling daughter has now had oral thrush 3 times and been treated with Nilstat and this time she also has a small amount on her bottom. It doesn't help that I am also on penicillan as apparently this can bring thrush out.
I have been told to not wear a bra or breast pads as thrush can harbour in this and to boil toys & dummies, use only disposable nappies, apply nilstat cream to her thumb. I'm really struggling with this thrush as of course any mother doesn't like seeing their child unhappy. Can anyone give me advise on what they have done, any good ideas/tips and will this eventually go away?? |

I would go to a health shop and start on some pro-biotics to help re-align the natural flora/forna (bacteria) balance, when your natural good bacteria that keep u healthy get killed of by antibiotics, that when u can get thrush. I have only ever had vaginal thrush tho, but I know it helps with oral too. Isla never got it in her mouth, but did get it in her vagina too, poor thing, and they have junior pro-biotics too. Also eat natutal yogurt containing acidofolis and bifidis. You can probably apply that staight on your boobs too. I know u can put it 'down there' to help with thrush and releif the associtaed pain/itch. Hope that helps. |

My daughter was on antibiotics twice in her first 2 weeks and she ended up with thrush in her mouth and on her bottom too. We had to use Nilstat for her oral thrush, Daktosin for her bottom and Miconazole Cream for my nipples. (I hope I got all the names right).
The Daktosin was great for the bottom because it doesn't 'wash' off when they pee and it cleared up her bottom really quick. The Nilstat we had to use for ages but it did clear up in the end. It's just such a nuisance doing it every feed (not to mention really messy). The Miconazole was just a precautionary measure. I have since heard of someone else who was told to also put the Nilstat on their nipples. If you have to stay on the penicillan for a while it might pay to ask your midwife or doctor what else you can do for your daughter such as the probiotics. Yep we used Daktosin as well and I used Daktarin for my nipples. I also used Canestan in the wash but we use cloth nappies and breast pads so if you're not you may not need to.
Also nappy off time in the sun (when you can find it) -------------

Daktosan, daktosan, daktosan for the bum (not sure I spelt it right). Everytime my youngest stepdaughter came to us she had thrush and open sores on her bum due to her mother never changing her! (another story for another time hehe) She would come on the Friday afternoon, I would bath her immediately (actually they all usually need a good bath) and powder on her bum (just a little) to dry the sores or the cream would smear right on and off, then smear her butt with this cream. By the Sunday night when it was hometime she was pretty much all cleared up and then we would do the same thing again when they came on the Wednesday night etc. etc. Sorry but have no ideas for the oral thrush. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://daisypath.com">

I don't have daktosan as I have micreme, I will get some daktosan though.
Bobbie, what is canestan?? The plunket nurse advised me not to use cloth nappies as this carries the thrush??? I will also get some pro-biotic, that sounds really effective. |

canestan in-wash. You add it to your washing and it kills the thrush along with other nasties.
Yep I wouldn't use cloth for the duration unless you use the canestan wash. I'm sure that's how I got thrush on my nipples - from washing the breast pads with the nappies. -------------

| Do I just get canistan in wash from the supermarket??? If I use this then I presume I can wear breast pads safely, as the plunket nurse advised not to wear breast pads or a bra... unfortunately thats not overly comfy for me! |

Yep you can get it at the supermarket. The not wearing breast pads or a bra will be to give your nipples some air - same as nappy off time for your bub.
I was the same so I just tried to do an hour a day with no bra on while Rowan was asleep. Sat in bed with a towel on my lap to catch the drips  -------------

My Dr told me I could wear breast pads if I changed them really frequently. So I just went through millions. Otherwise all of my clothes would have been constantly soaked. I often used disposable breastpads with a few drops of Nilstat on them where my nipples sit. ------------- Chloe (4 years) and Oliver (3 years). |

Cath had systemic thrush at 6 weeks. Thrush on inside of mouth and on bottom too. Treated bottom with daktozin ointment (ointment stays on unlike a cream). Use disposables while she is being treated for thrush is what my doctor recommended.
Use nilstatin? oral medication (dropper) much nicer than trying to smear some cream in babies mouth. Use nilstatin? cream for nipples (does not have to be washed off, safe for breastfeeding). Both are prescribed. Don't use daktarin oral gel on boobs - very drying and i think that doctors were directed to advise people to NOT use it on boobs last year. Parent centre also advocated a vinegar dip (vinegar/water mixture) for nipples (something about how thrush can't survive in this sort of acidic environment) - check with doctor/parent centre/plunket regarding this information. It took six weeks to clear up (so about 4 repeats of medication) totally. Now: Caths' bum thrush (no spots in mouth this time) came back with a vengence and i asked doctor to refer us to a dermitis specialist who i saw today. The specialist advocated lots of nappy off time. No daktozin this time (daktozin is an inhibitor of yeast/thrush so DOES NOT kill it), and prescribed Batrafen Cream, twice daily, (kills yeast/thrush apparently), and on top of that, also twice daily, micreme H. When not using those he said put vaseline on the area. Bath baby and put something (i don't have the name of it on hand, it's a shampoo that you add to the water, will put it in here tomorrow) in the bath water. |

| Cath reacts to vaseline! looks like burn marks on her bottom from where the vaseline was applied. Must have very sensitive skin. Hope that DD, mcilrs, responds well to her treatment. |

I used the Nilstat on a touch on thrush that B had and it also seemed like ages to clear up. When I had it confirmed I asked the GP about treatment for me and he said I should be ok (was not my normal GP) In the end I mentioned it to my PN and she suggested I go to the chemist. We were given Oral Daktarin and it cleared it up really quick. I did use the gel on the nipples after a feed which was suggested to me and I made sure I washed them in plain water prior to applying the gel.
I would def go with the yoghurt for yourself, especially one with the good stuff in it. The other thing that may help is like Rackhell suggested if DD is having nappy off time, wash 'the girls' and sit inside in line with the sun to really dry them out and cover up when DD does. -------------

Thanks for your fantastic suggestions, so far this is what I have been doing/using: Nappy time off whenever dd is awake (lots of washing towells with this procedure!!) Plenty of time with bra off also, luckily I live in a rural area so no one is around! Daktarin on my nipples Nilstat in the mouth for dd Micreme on dd bottom Eating yogurt that contains acidophulus Canestan in wash for all washing cycles! If i don't kick this thrush this time then there must be something seriously wrong!!! Thanks again for the great tips. |
