Hey Everyone,

Baby is due in 6 weeks and im starting to make sure that everything is all ready for Caden, most importantly his cot.
At the moment we have cotton sheets in the cot...and the duvet cover, so i have a blanket on the mattress and then a cotton sheet over that, the another sheet and the duvet.
My question is, cos its coming into winter and by the time June comes round its going to be a lot colder, what sort of bedding should i be using? are the sheets we have going to be warm enough? I have no idea and i dont want our bubba to get cold!
We plan on swaddling him before he goes to sleep aswell...

I bought some flannelette (sp) sheets from the warehouse. I have a double duvet inner that splits in two, one for summer and put it together for two at winter. Then i have a fleece thin blanket on top that long so can be tucked right under her mattress as she kicks her blankets off..

were they baby sheets or just normal size ones? i know my mum said she used to buy big sheets and cut them down and sew them to make little sheets for the cot..

This bub will have flannelette sheets too, but cotton will be fine as long as you layer him up.

just keep in mind he might be a hot baby too. Ethan could never sleep on flannel sheets or wear wool to bed, he just got too hot..

We just used flannlette sheets and a woolen blanket folded in two. Plus he had a heater on his room just to take the chill off the air.

The woollen aircell blankets are great.

Cool thanks ladies, that gives us some idea's. We will probably pop the heater in the room before he goes to bed to take the chil off like Stacey said aswell.

We did cotton sheets, wool blankets and a heater in the room. One other great idea that my mum suggested was a cloth nappy across the upper section of the mattress (where his head will be) so that if he's a spilly baby all you need to do is change the nappy rather than constantly changing sheets.

That sounds alright, it depends on how hot your house keeps itself as well. At first you'll probably swaddle him for bed anyways so remember that's another rather snug layer. Winter babies tend to get given lots of wraps/blankets so I wouldn't buy anything more unless you need it after he's born.

flanelette sheets yep and a wool blanket..not sure if a duvet is really suitable for newborns...

Ella was born in June and for her we used a flannette sheet, then she was swaddled with a cotton wrap followed by a woollen blanket which was folded into 2 (sometimes 3) and we had the heater going through out the night (she slept in our room for the first 3 months). She wore a merino gown with a singlet underneath.

I agree with busymum about not buing too much bedding. I brough FAR too much and now we hardly use any of it, as I started using a sleeping bag when she was around 4 months old, so now don't use any blankets.

Also on the really cold nights I heated up a wheat pack and put in her bed just before she got in (and then removed it).

We used a wheat bag as well and it was great. I don't think you are supposed to use duvets until 1yr, that's what Jack's duvet tag says. Apparently Plunket only recommend wool blankets, maybe aircell as well, as they are breathable whereas others such as polar fleece aren't, just in case the blanket goes over baby's face although we never experienced this.

Apparently you shouldn't use quilts and duvets till 12 months, but thats a personal choice. Wouldn't do it for a newborn but Jack has a quilt thats just not too close to his face. Woolen blankets are the best, and if you just use a single blanket then by the time you fold it over a couple of times you have all the layering you need. Def a flannelette sheet on the bottom but if he's hot try a cotton one on the top first. Wool and cotton breathes better than acrylic and polar fleece so they're best for snuggles and daytime. A lot of newborns sweat heaps as they can't regulate their temperatures so don't worry if he wakes up one night completely soaked! They're just plain weird

Ohh I didnt know that about the duvets I got one of those cot sets, with the sheets, duvet, bumper pad etc etc. I think i'll go to babycity and get something else to use instead of the duvet then.

Thats a good idea about putting a cloth nappy down by their head, i will definitly do that to save the sheets!

Our duvet says that too, not to use until 12 months I mean. Also cot bumpers are not recommended until the same age in case they roll and get caught up in it. Sam did this with a blanket I had hung over the cot side when she was around 5 months and nearly suffocated. (Thank god for angelcare monitors!!!)

We just used a cotton sheet and a aircell blanket folded in 2 or 3 depending on the night and she would wear a singlet, footed onsie and be swaddled.
We also went the sleeping bag route when Sam was around 4-5 months and will never look back. But I also have a closet full of blankets we don't use

I didn't have a woollen aircell blanket at first and got one when Char was about 2 weeks old from my Mum. I definitely reckon they are worth the investment. And I also agree with MrsMojo - they can be a bit spilly so a flat cloth nappy across the top of the bed where the head is is great - you can simply change it every day if he is a bit spilly.

I was too freaked out to use a cot bumper after hearing horror stories of babies suffocating. Not good.

Our quilt didn't get used at first but Daniel has had it for about 2 months now. He loves having it on his bed now, it makes it more snuggly like mummys bed. So at least it's getting used now.

I have taken the bumper pad off(only had one with the set for the end of the cot).
Im going out today so I think I'll have a look and see if I can find some warmer blankets etc for his cot now that I know we cant use the duvet.

The wool aircell ones are fab. And because they have lots of little holes at least if it gets over his head he will still be able to breathe.

Have a look on TM though. I got 2 from there. Much cheaper than brand new.

If you still want to use the pretty bumper thingy, put it at the end of the cot they aren't at. And definitely recommend nappies under the head - we were going through about 6 a day, so glad it wasnt sheets getting changed!

We have a blanket on the mattress, a waterproof mattress protector, a cotton fitted sheet, a flat sheet, a polar fleece blanket and a duvet on keziah at the moment..she also has a Safe T Sleep so doesn't need to be swaddled at night but does during the day as we don't use it

We also have a 100% cotton Air Cell blanket that we used in the summer time! She's a hot baby (3 degrees hotter than everyone else) and STILL got hot under that so we often just put a sheet over her until it got a little cooler

Also, like Aimee said.. use flat cotton nappies under his head just in case of spills.. it saves heaps of time
