I have just gotten back from an overseas trip, where I found out I am expecting my first child. I haven't had a chance to go to my GP yet, in fact all we have had time for is to tell our parents.
I am married, have been for a year, and despite the fact this is 5 years to early according to my ten year plan, we are both stoked.
But now what? Will the GP set me onto the right people? What can I cant I have? I know to avoid alcohol and shellfish. When will my first scan be? What do I need in my nursery?
ARGH! Sorry as excited as I am I am so overwhelmed and confused and just don't know where to start.

Your GP will steer you in the right direction and you can confirm with them what you can and can't eat etc. Your GP will also decide if you need an early scan (for dating purposes usually).
Don't worry about the nursery just yet.
Check out the search function on here and read some old threads. There's tons of good advice out there in previous threads to do with eating and preparing yourself etc
Congrats though!

Congrats and welcome to OB!! How exciting for you! Ummm...I guess you'll prob want to get a midwife. Your GP should be able to put you onto some, or do you know anyone in your area who could recommend one to you??

Hello flake, your gp will do a pee test and maternal bloods and then will most likely give you a list of local midwifes, if not yellow pages have them listed. First scan is normally at 12 weeks, sometimes earlier if you need a dating scan or they are worried about anything. Then you have another scan at 20 weeks where you can find out the sex.
You should avoid alcohol and limit caffeine, also no cold cuts, so no ham, cold chicken etc. All is ok if heated. No shell fish or sushi and no unprocessed cheeses like brie etc. Erm think that is it food wise.
As for the nursery that could be a whole thread of its own.
Have a look on either baby factory or baby city websites, they do a list of essential items.
Congratulations

Congrats!!! I know the feeling you are experiencing. Even if you plan to have a baby it still is quite a shock when you actually are preggas(like us). You may find the pregnancy thread a bit more useful as it has all the info there and you can join up to a thread where ladies are due in the same month. Welcome to Ohbaby too!

Congratulations! Your GP will give you a list of midwives to call. Ask heaps of questions and find one thats right for you! I had a dating scan at what I thought was 12 weeks preg but dated me at 10 weeks.
From memory avoid any supermarket deli food, cold meats, camembert type mouldy cheese, and make sure your meat is completely cooked not pink, and no raw egg like in some mayos/hollandaise. Thats to avoid listeria oh and not too much tuna/lemon fish because of the mercury levels.
But dont worry about that stuff too much just enjoy your pregnancy!

Congrats to you and your hubby! And welcome to Oh Baby. This is a great place for all sorts of help and advice!!
I was in a similar situation, moved here from Scotland in 2005 and I didn't have a clue where to start!!!
Your GP is the first port of call, they will take bloods and do a preggie test to confirm and then the next thing is to organise your midwife. After that I would sit back for a wee while and just get used to the idea of being pregnant! The nusery stuff can wait for a few weeks! But like everyone has said, check out a few websites as they usually have a checklist for what you need.
Best of luck!

Hi there Flake, and Welcome to OhBaby!
First off let me say Congratulations on your pregnancy.
You need to make an appointment with your GP who will do a urine test (be able to tell straight away) and also a blood test to get ur HCG levels etc to confirm your pregnancy.. will also talk to you regarding the last time you had your period (by this he/she can tell approximately when you are due) and do an abdominal check. You can then ask for your GP to point you in the direction of midwives and depending on where you are in the country you need to get in ASAP or you miss out on all the good ones LOL
I was 20 weeks by the time I got my midwife and she was only a community one, so she wasn't able to be at the hospital while I gave birth... but was there for me before and afterwards
Anything else you need to know, just ask..

PS. 10 year plans are overrated, none of my four kids were in mine, but here we are with a completely revised 10 year plan and doing fine!

Hi Flake, welcome and congrats.
Everyone has given you some good advice so I can't add much except:
I found this website helpful http://www.babycenter.com/is-it-safe.htm#safefoodBkmk
and as for the nursery, decide what you want (there is some cool stuff out there), save up (or take the grandparents to be shopping with you ), shop around in sales etc for good deals. Trademe is great!
The Baby Factory (and probably other stores too) have email promotions that you can join and get special deals sent directly to you. Also the Bounty packs that you get through your midwife contain lots of free samples and discount coupons for you - make sure you get one (mine forgot).
Fun times ahead, it will fly by. Hope everything goes well.

Congrats Flake, just to add that you can request a ME PACK now that you are pregnant - you get a little box in the post with a few samples and heaps of coupons. Its a neat little start to your pregnancy, just google it or ask the girls in your Due in ... thread as I know they've all got theirs!
Best of luck!

Hey Flake, just to add to what everyone else has said, the midwife is a really important thing to oprganise as they fill up really quickly and some areas have a real shortage, so that would be my very first step.
COngrats!
