They really need to rule out gestational diabetes as it has huge implications on the rest of your pregnancy delivery and health. The three hour test gives a more acurate picture of what is going on, I failed my polycose test and sailed through my GTT. The starving thing is hard, take a snack with you to eat as soon as you have finished and take a good book to read, they should give you an early morning appointment so you're not starving all day

Yep Im doing it at 8am on Monday so that DF can sit with me. Im not allowed to eat from 8pm Sunday night. My mum was boarderline GD when she was pregnant with me, so I hope that doesnt have anything to do with it...
Is the drink the same as the one for the polycose? Or is it worse? Im not looking forward to drinking that lot on an emty tummy, I feel ick in the mornigns as it is until I eat

Yeah it's the same stuff, i went to another lab in the city for my GTT, and they gave me a choice of flavours but to be honest the lemonade one seemed the best choice on an empty stomach

The hardest thing was trying to remember in the morning that I was fasting, preggy brain and all that. I so needed adult supervision during my pregnancy

lol, I have DF coming with me so he can look after me. I'll be so nervous about the test that I wont wanna eat anyways. Im worried about feeling sick though with the not eating thing
The drink was quite sweet, but pleasant to drink, just tatsed like a cheap lemonade that had gone a bit flat! lol Its just trying to drink it fast that I hated.

Don't worry. I failed my first test too, but also sailed through the GDD one.
It isn't actually that bad, when I had mine there were a couple of other women there having the same one done and we ended up chatting our way through the couple of hours we were there. It went alot faster than I thought it would that's for sure.
Good advice on taking the snack though, I was half starved by the time it was finished
Also most medlabs open between 7am and 7.30am so I would see if you could go earlier. I had mine starting at 8am and was gutted when I got there and found there were two others that had started earlier than me!!!

Same here, failed the first one, sailed through the second one, and then further on in my pregnancy I sailed through it again (midwife made me do it again at 38 weeks cos I got so big!!)
No biggie, and if you do have GD, then it's just controlled by diet. One of the girls in my ante-natal group had it, and she just had to make sure she was eating properly with little to no cakes and junk.
Good luck!

I live in Waiuku so just a little town lol and whenever I go into the medlab at 8am theres no one there lol, it gets busy around lunch time I think. It opens at 7.30 so yeah, I will be going in inbetween 7.30 and 8am
It actually works out well, DF has a doc appointment at 9.30 and thats in the same building lol, so we can wander down there while we are waiitng for my blood tests etc.

I remember being told i couldn't go back to work between tests and I worked in the same building. Something to do with the timeing of the tests and if there are delays it has tobe repeated from memory

i just reread your initial question properly, now I have had my caffeine fix and realised you asked "what they made you do" not "why they made you do it", so sorry my first response didn't answer your question at all.
You get the lovely drink and a blood test on arrival, then a blood test on the hour to 3 hours, then you can eat and drink, I'm not su you can drink water even in the meantime

I failed the 1st but got through the second. I then had to do it at 38 weeks as I was H U G E!
My 1st time they wouldn't let me leave, but at 38 weeks she let me go for a slow walk in the lovely winter sun!
Take a book in case they don't let you leave!
Good Luck!

The reason they don't let you go is that activity can affect the way that the sugar metabolises in your blood. I agree it is a bit silly, a quiet walk isn't exactly the same as a run round the block, but I guess it's all about ensuring consistent, accurate results.
I've never failed a Polycose but I did have 2 GTT's during my pregnancy with Maya (my midwife is a Nazi lol, and Maya was huuuuge for dates). They were icky, but in the grand scheme of things it's only 3 hours out of your life. I found the hardest part was not throwing up the icky drink on a empty stomach!
Good luck Sheza! If worst comes to worse and you do fail it there are a few ladies here that have had GD so will be able to give you some good advice/support.

Oooh Sheza, you'll be fine
It's good that DF is going with you... just no hanky panky in the waiting room! It'll mess up your blood sugars
**8edited to fix spelling mistakes. Man I have the WORST case of baby brain right now!!

Is there any symptoms to indicate you have GD?

I had Gd with Rhyley and not with my first 2 pregnancies (and I had the glucose test with all so its not like it was just missed) i failed miserably with Rhyley my blood sugar was so high lol... anyway the second test they take your fasting blood, then give you the drink (its not that bad) you sit for an hour - another blood test and then wait another hour and then another blood test - not sure why you have to be there 3 hours as they only test till 2 hours after first test?
You can't leave cause as Emma says exercise can effect our sugar levels and also what if someone cheats and eats something yet again mucking up the results.
If it turns out that you do have GD, i managed to control it by diet (with a few high sugar levels now and then) It was pretty hard cutting out sugary foods and ones you sholdn't have. but after I had Rhyley it was gone (yay back to sugar foods lol) I didn't put on as much wieght with Rhyley after that either. i do how ever have to test every year for Diabetes now incase i develope it (family history and gd = more than likely get type 2 diabetes)
More than happy to answer any questions you have if your fail this one too..
