I'm about to move my little one into a cot from his bassinet - should I use a foam or innerspring mattress, or does it really matter either way? Thanks

We were going to use a foam one but the child birth educater at our antenatal class recommended using an innersprung. To tell you the truth I can't remember her reasoning but it was pretty strong.

I would say go for the innersprung one, they last longer and are a bit more hard-wearing. Foam ones, we found get the indent of the child and their head pretty quickly, we were forever turning it and alternating sides and ends to try and make sure that baby wasn't stuck in a dip. once we got a new cot for Ayja and got the innersprung matress given free with the package, whoa, so much better, would never go back. ------------- Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja

Innersprung all the way.. they have more support than a plain foam mattress!! -------------

We bought a cot and a form mattress came with it, after few months we bought an innersprung, definitely much better.

I just figure I am much more comfortable on a sprung mattress than on a foam one.
Wasn't there research years ago about mould forming in foam mattresses that were linked with SIDS? I think that was where the science of using mattress covers came from, not too sure on that one, someone may be able to tell me I'm talking rubbish ------------- http://www.babysfirstsite.com">

I think you are right Redbedrock. If you are going to use foam then one of those plastic mattress wraps is a good idea to stop the mould spores from being inhaled by baby (I could be completely wrong - memory not what it used to be).
Liam's still in his basinette too but we plan on getting an innersprung one. Hopefully we will find one on sale over Easter  -------------

Innersprungs are better but if you can't afford it, well it's just a matter of lots more flipping over etc with a foam mattress. As far as comfort goes, so long as you do turn a foam one over regularly I personally don't think it will make too much difference on a child until they get somewhat heavier. -------------  |
