My 7 month old is BF and has been on solids for a month now and it badly constipated.

I have just introduced meat into hid diet so I am wondering if this is causing it? Last time he got a little constipated was when I gave him banana so I haven't given that for a while.

Does anyone have any tips for helping with this? He really screams and is in so much pain it is really upsetting.

I went to the pharmacy to get some coloxyl drops but they have been out of stock with the supplier for months

Give him some water. Try the watties prunes and apple jars, or soak some prunes in boiling water, and then push them through a seive once they are soft, and give him this puree.

Put vasoline around his anus, so when the poo hits the vasoline, it can slide out with less pain.

Lie him on his back, and cycle his legs as if hes riding a bike, and try gently rubbing his belly clockwise. When he is is pooing lift his legs up towards his belly to help it come out.

We give Daniel prune juice every day to stop constipation and it works wonderfully. We just buy a 1L container of sunsweet prune juice and water it down and give this in between his milk feeds. He loves the taste of it too.

Caprece got a bit constipated too and i used to add a few prunes every time I cooked up a batch of baby food.

...everything Kellz said!

Yep, you're right - meat and bananas won't help with consitpation.  Lots of fruit puree's are good, go easy on the starch (including farex).

Hmm, I know every baby's different, but I've found that since I've stopped feeding Jett fruit, he's not constipated anymore. I know fruits like apples & banana's you should avoid if constipated, but I was only mainly feeding Jett pears and since i've stopped he's been much better & going daily again. I've just introduced mince into Jett's diet & that seems to be going well, still going well in the poo department!

Thanks for the reminder, Italiah -

apples kept Ella constipated - they have either one effect or the other, depending on the person.

I got some lactoluse from the doctors which helped with Cooper. It draws moisture into the stools so they are easier to pass. Coop has 2.5ml of it a day (when I remember!)

I was giving Jett lactulose as well, before I stopped giving him fruit. But I have found that since I stopped the fruit, I didn't need to give him lactulose anymore.

Peaches are one of the better fruits for assisting with constipation - most of the others mentioned can have a bad effect.

But the best food for keeping babies regular is mushroom!   This is lily's favourite food and I add it to every dinner and we have no problems. Mind you she also doesn't like fruit so only eats veges (I have found since having bread her stools are more solid so will up the mushrrom intake).

Thanks so much everyone. I will try Kellz suggestions and go easy on the apples etc.

I just wasn't prepared as I thought that BF would guard against that - my first was bottle fed and he had it badly, but that was so long ago I couldn't remember how to sort it.

Wish me luck!

Hope you find a solution soon. We tried everything but my poppet has had, and still has, constipation issues since 4mths. Thankfully most days it doesn't hurt her to poo anymore but we've never really found a cure though despite trying everything and having tests galore!

Most kids settle down once their bodies adjust to solids

Izobel used to get really bad constipation when we were introducing milk as well as formula into her diet and we got told when she was trying to poo to put her in a sink/bucket or bath with lukewarm water with baking soda in it, this was plunket line that told us, apparently it relaxes the sphincter muscles and helps the child to poo.

not a cure but it should help, Eden also likes watered down prune juice and has had lactoluse and it works wonders!

good luck though

Bananas are no good and neither are the rice cereals for babies or muesli/porridge - what do you give him for breakfast?
Pears, plums, grapes, peaches etc - watery fruit - are meant to work really well.
Hope the prunes worked for you
