I'm just starting to think about what I should be getting for when bubs arrives and was looking at pockets but after reading through some posts I see a lot of people prefer prefolds in the beginning. So now I'm not sure what to do so any suggestions or opinions much appreciated Thanks!

LOL Deb, *when* you have the baby!
I have no experience here but have stocked up on small pockets for bub. I used flats and pins for the gremlins when they were tiny and they worked fine, so if this bub is too small for the pockets initially I'll use the flats and pins on her again.

I only have experience with pockets from 5mths but my sister has an 11wk old and she's used pockets from birth and she hasn't had any problem with containment. Saying that though, my mum made her some newborn pockets which were smaller than "small" pockets on the market. Both of my babies have been of good size (7lb 80z at 38wks and 8lb 13oz at 40wks) so they'd probably have fit smalls from birth, but I know of a few people who didn't get their babies into smalls until around 6-8wks. So you could always get a back up stash of newborn disposables in case you have a little one and just buy smalls. I think there are some lovely fitted nappies & wraps on the market (I'd love to try a Baby Beehind Bamboo one-size fitted nappy with a Designer Bums Merino Wrap), I'm just not sure I'd be brave enough to splash out on a system I'm unfamiliar with.

We have used NapNaps since the day Jack came home from hospital and they have been great. We haven't had to change sizes as he grew (well except we have just moved to a bigger cover) and have only ever had one very small leak. I would definately recommend them as they "grow" with baby rather than having to change nappy sizes etc.

We used pockets half the time when from when Daniel was about 2 weeks old. He was only in them half the time because we had sposies to use up. Never had leaks from them. But I'd put cross over snaps on the small pockets just so they can be done a bit tighter.

I only started with cloth when Joshie was about 15 months but for the next baby I think I'm going to buy lots of nappies throughout the pregnancy so I have lots of everything! I can imagine pockets still being my favourites though.

We went with prefolds and covers first cos they work out a lot cheaper than pockets (and they might only be in them for a short time, depending on baby's size). We kinda knew Harrison was gonna be big (scans and stuff) and decided that once he fitted the next size up for pockets (medium) that we'd get them then.
I've never had a leak with the prefolds (though have had MANY a poo leak with sposies), the one thing I don't like about them so much is it seems a big wad of wetness around his butt.. noticed a massive difference compared to the pocket nappy he had on last night that took all the moisture away!
But one good thing with prefolds is that if they've just peed, you can just air the cover and then use it again (so rotate 2).. less washing.
The main reason we went with prefolds though was cos they were cheaper

Thanks heaps for all your thoughts, I have just bought 18 prefold nappies, 3 Bummis Super Whisper covers and a fleece cover and I'm thinking I might get a few small pockets as well just to try them because I'm thinking definitely pockets once bubs is in a medium. Do you think I'll need more than this? Thanks again

We heart the bummis covers.. they are awesome.
Yeah I think you will need more than 3 covers - if poop gets on the edge bit (which it often does.. doesn't leak but gets on the inside) then you have to wash them. And lil babies tend to poo alot. The covers do dry fast though. 18 prefolds should be plenty. Oh and you might wanna get a snappi, cos they're great too

You could get a bummi superbrite cover - it has gussets which are great for containing stuff.

I have started using Bambino Mio nappies - they are a prefold cotton nappy system with separate outers. Easy to use - no pins, the outers have velcro. The Mio Liners draw moisture away from baby's bottom and makes disposing of the solids SO much easier by flushing down the toilet! I bought a pack with 12 nappies and 3 outers and bought additional outer and 8 nappies, which means I have a stock pile. They are not too big and bulky on Ella and have not had any leakages!

Jo I'm sure you will love the prefolds! I use them still on Sophie. And the bummis wraps are great!! I use pockets overnight on her, and sometimes during the day. Pockets are addictive, coz they are so darn cute!! Welcome to the wonderful world of MCN!!!
