I have several friends that havent lost any weight when feeding..i am losing a kilo every few days(fluid retention) but i assume now most of the fluid is gone I will still lose weight..the mw seems to think this will be the case too..did this happen for you?did you put it back on when you finished feeding?

AS far as your baby.. mine last night settled himself to sleep straight away at night (which he often does ) but also did it this morning from being awake ..which never happens..only thing i did differently was not give him the dummy(well i tried this morning but he didnt want it)...

so what do i do...not use the dummy anymore? hope it wasnt a fluke? let him grizzle but if he really cries go in and soothe him then leave?

oh and mw mentioned anyone with baby who had first apgar 3 or under(like Ethan) needs to have hearing checked at Plunket...does anyone know why this is? are they more likely to have hearing problems?

I didn't loose much (only a couple of kg) from feeding Daniel. Though I stopped at 3 months.

If he doesn't need the dummy I wouldn't offer it but if he gets unsettled them maybe try it.

I'm still breastfeeding and have managed to lose the 20kg i gained during pregnancy ...very slowly though. And now with Lucas bumping his breastfeeds back up to FIVE times per day (yes, on top of solids) ...I find I am eating more to keep up my energy levels ...infact ever since he was born my appetite has been huge! Constantly snacking!

I lost a lot in the first 2-3 weeks due to fluid retention and have only got 7kg to go now. When I stopped expressing at 2 weeks I only had 9kg to go I think. It probably does help but if you're like me, I was so incredibly hungry that I don't think I would have lost much weight. Now I can diet and train for the City 2 Surf walk that's in about 3 weeks.

I put on nearly 20kgs when preg,..was 54kg pre-preg. I bf for 10 months, was back to 54kgs after bf for about 3 months. Now its 6months since I stopped bf, and Im now back up to 57kgs (but this is fully my fault, not the stopping bf, Im sure!)

I put on 10kgs during pregnancy, lost 7kgs during labour but had trouble shifting the rest although I suspect that has more to do with it being Easter a week after Michaela was born than anything else.

I BF for first 15 months but it wasn't until I got a nasty stomach virus at Christmastime (when she was 8 months) that I lost the last of my baby weight plus some.

As for the dummy I agree with what you said about trying him without it but if he gets upset (as opposed to just grizzly) pop in and soothe him. If he wants the dummy though don't stress, just give it to him.

I lost heaps of weight breast feeding, I was over 100kg while pregnant with DD (stopped weighing myself in the end) and purely based on breastfeeding, because I was eating non-stop, I was 67kg when I got pregnant with this one - DD was 11 months old. I had more trouble keeping my weight at a level where I felt healthy.
I was still breastfeeding for several months after I got pregnant, so don't know how quickly I will put weight back on, but I imagine I will gain some because my pre-pregnancy weight was generally around 75kg. I am hoping I lose weight as easily this time around too!

I didn't lose any weight b'feeding and we did it for 6 months.
As for the dummy, we never used one so if he doesn't want it, why force it?
Not sure on the apgar, have you checked with your GP?

milo yeah mw said some do some dont...and no rhyme or reason why /why not.. kellz.. so it did work for you..

as for the dummy he seems ok without it..though hes overtired now..( i tried to only have him up and hour but he wouldnt settle so had to re burp and cuddle..but will see what happens next few minutes.. mazzy how awesome:)

as far as dummy..i jus tmeant do i try him without seeing as he can do it...or give it to him anyway..i would never force him..

and i will check with gp when i go in two weeks...just wondered if anyone knew why that's all.

I lost a lot in the first few weeks, but it is creeping back on now - I have to get mroe active and stop the snacking! As you feed less and the hormones settle down bfing isn't as kind to weightloss as eariler on. So don't get too reliant!

Also, if you aren't eating regularly then it will effect your supply - especially those evening feeds which you can struggle with anyway. Try and have some healthy snacks around so it is easy as i found feeding myself such a challenge in those first few weeks.

He Kaww I'm also one that lost weight while breastfeeding and I have found I can't do much cardio exercise without it effecting my milk supply so just start off slowly there. It did take me 6 months to lose the 15ish kgs I put on both times, I found I lost heaps at the start, then it stopped and then just before 6 months heaps fell off again.

With the dummy thing I'd just try to not use it but if he won't go to sleep without it its no biggy.

I've still got 10kg to go and TBH I think that 5 of it is boobs so I don't think I'll get back down to pre-preggy weight until I stop BFing.

I'm always hungry and thirsty and I do try to eat healthily but it's so frustrating when so many healthy foods give her wind So far muesli, lettuce, acidic fruits, iron supplements, fish oil and coffee are known culprits

I would just make sure you're eating enough as someone said above so that your milk production is good.

With settling it's probably a really good thing that he can go off to sleep without the dummy. It means if he falls asleep with it then loses it in the night you don't have to worry about popping it back in. Rowan started being able to self settle around that age. It might just be that he's learning how to. Letting him grizzle and then settling him if he cries sounds like a good plan.

I also lost my pregnancy weight + some whilst breastfeeding but after I stopped my weight started climbing back up.

As for the dummy thing, it's up to you when you use it, with Ava we started giving her it as she was wanting to suck all the time, we never really gave her it for settling until about a month ago, she uses it to go to sleep then spits it out when she doesn't need it. She is a very settled and content wee thing.

I guess every baby is different and you will find a way that suits bub and you but don't be reluctant to try things, they may just work!!

I was back to pre preggy weight within 2 months, I'm not sure if it was to do with the breastfeeding because I spent the whole time I was bfing stuffing my face like crazy. I use to drink lots of milo as well, I found it made the night feeds a bit more bareable if I had a nice hot drink (was the middle of winter).

With the dummy I would put him to bed without and then if he needs it give it to him. Spencer was quite random with his dummy, he would have it to calm down but then wouldn't sleep with it (would fall asleep and it would fall out but he wouldn't mind) and he never had it for night sleeps only day ones At around 2-3 months he dropped it entirely when he found his fingers.

its strange he was fine all night and day and then needed it again at 10pm..which is often a hard one to settle him down.. and then he was up for two hour s in the middle of the night which hasnt happened for ages.. he was getting better night time at increasing intervals(was a week since really bad night) then 2 night s in between bad..i realise just when you think you have a routine you really dont:) never mind we'll get there..

rachandjack how does the exercise affect the milk..how do you know..cause she seems less settled? he certianly sleep s better in the morning..so maybe its my milk.. bobbie- yeah milk affected by heaps of food..more than when i was preg:(!!

cuppatea- i guess i could boil jug in between boobs but somtimes im just wanting to get that first one in quick to make him happier:) though I'm beginning to stress less and calm down more! yeah hes foudn his fingers..sometimes he will be suck suck sucking.. and sometimes dummy falls out and doesnt care and other times blue murder..and like now hes' asleep in bouncer(always for first day sleep and he isnt wrapped or dummy and hes fine..)where's my instruction manual!!!:)

Lol!!!

So far I've lost 15kg from how much I was when at 39weeks preggie. I can't remember how much I weighed pre-pregnancy though (ignorance is bliss!) so I don't know how much I put on... I know it was a fair bit though. But in saying that, alot of it was fluid cos from memory when Harry was a week old I was 10kg lighter than I was at 39weeks.

Edited for bad spelling

It was a hindsight thing that I realised it was the exercise. She was sleeping really well and then I started working out hard out (like and hour every day or quite physical stuff) and about 2 weeks after that she started sleeping terribly, and just being really grumpy and feeding a lot. It wasn't until I cut it down a bit and realised she wasn't so grumpy when I didn't do it. I think I just wasn't making the same amount.

If hes sleeping better in the morning but not afternoon I'd say it wouldn't be your milk but just maybe him?

I only breastfed for 3 weeks with Phoenix (due to apetite issues and being sick after the birth), so now he is a happy formula fed bubs.

Since I won't have that weight loss through breast feeding benefit, I have decided to join weight watchers today. Go me!

I gained 17 kilos during birth (8 kilos of that I gained in the last 5 weeks due to water retention). I was at a whopping 105 kilos. I was already at my heaviest when I fell pregnant.

I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight at about 10 days after birth. I was 87 kilos but still not eating right. Now that I am trying to turn my apetite around, I am 90 kilos and want to get down to a reasonable weight for my height.

I am starting with a 15 kg goal, and once I reach my target, I will re-assess and probally go another 10.

Oh man! This isn't fair! I am 17 kg more than when I was actually pregnant! Have to admitt, I was thin because I had severe vomiting whole way through and spent alot of time in hospital but I was expecting that once I had the baby, I'd be slim and gorgeous. Instead, I guess because I starved most of my pregnancy, I am storing every little piece of food I consme. OMG imagine when I stop BF. Not fair!
