Ok 2 questions here
1. How many inserts do I need to put in during the day and then at night? I've been stuffing as many as I can in but then I go through them so fast I don't have any left so how many do I really need?

2.Whats the cheapest place to get them they are all so expensive or can I make my own? I tried stuffing a few flannels in but that didn't work so well lol.

what are you stuffing them in to???

i used to use an insert and a doubler (just a smaller insert really) into my fuzzi bunz for a couple of hours use and for night 1 flat and a microfibre insert.

Lots of places sell inserts and it all depends on what sort of insert you like; microfibre, hemp, bamboo, a combination ...

I found Stacey's trifold inserts to be fantastic at the moment. In fact her nappies are becoming my nappy du jour right now (or should that be nappy du nuit as I like them as my night nappy).

Check out greenbeans for material to make your own also.

It depends how heavy your kids wet! Seb is a light wetter and only needs 1 microfibre trifold, or an unbleached (snappied) prefold on it's own with no booster, but alot of kiddies would need more than that. Hemp/microfibre is a good combo, and bamboo is also apparently really good. I use a hemp/microfibre trifold in Seb's overnight pocket, and it lasts him 12 hours.... again most kids would need at least 2 of those though!

Edited for clarification.

As you are in Chch you could also contact Bumbles in Addington, they have pre-made inserts, but they also have all the fabric if you want to make them yourself (this is what I've done as it worked out quite a bit cheaper).

My little fulla has 2 microfibre inserts (which is 6 layers of microfibre) during the day and it lasts him about 3 hours. At night I add about 3 layers of bamboo, for about 12 hours. Bamboo is fab but takes a while longer to dry. You could do a search on Trade Me for nappy inserts and you might get some ideas of what to buy or make.

I use the following:

DAY: Either a 3-layer mf insert & doubler (6 layers of mf in total) or a Foxybots mf/hemp combo trifold (3 layers of hemp & 3 layers of mf in total).

NIGHT: A Nix-Kidz hemp flat with a Cotton Babies one-size mf insert on top (6 layers of hemp & 3 layers of mf in total).

Day 6 layers of Microfibre (2x trifolds)

Night 8 layers of Hemp and 6 hours of Microfibre, or 5 layers of Hemp, old square flat and 6 layers of microfibre.

This is what we use:

Daytime: 1 micofibre/hemp trifold or 2x 3 layer microfibre inserts

Nighttime: A sh*tload! 6 layers of microfibre and 18 layers of hemp. And they are all wet in the morning. My boy sure knows how to pee at night lol

Ok I have just ordered a few different types so I guess I'll see what happens. I might have a few trial days at home where it doesn't matter if they leak.

Its all so exciting I wish I'd gotten into it sooner.

lol yeah his nappies are absolutely massive. I've tried putting less inserts in before and then he wakes up bitching about a wet nappy so we have to have that much. Bamboo doesn't even help which is meant to be a little more absorbent than hemp.. it's very gross to unstuff in the morning, smells like mad and very wet

Isn't it?? I started (or re-started, I didn't like the first cloth set we had... now I am NOT making the same mistake, and trying different types) and after almost a year in sposies I'm loving Seb wearing cloth. And of course going nappy-mad and buying lots of gorgeous nappies

I also wish I'd been open to trying cloth sooner. I didn't discover pocket nappies until my second baby was 5mths old! Now I'd never go back to disposables.

Try this link for the cheapest I know to buy good quality microfibre inserts.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Members/Listings.aspx?searchtype=SELLER&member=52212 - TradeMe

As for how many, we use 1 long + 1 short inserts in the days (3 hours or so) and 3 inserts at nights.

I have about half as many extra inserts as I do nappies - although I wash every day and they only take a few hours to dry so I rarely have to break into the extras in the summer time.

I don't have extras. I have 2 inserts per nappy for daytime use and I have 3ish days worth and then my crazy amount of inserts for night time and I have 3 lots of that.

I don't see the point in "extra" inserts, I wash every day or second so I have no need for extras.

Hey Stacey - how's your back doing? I'd heard from someone on another cloth nappy board that you're out of action in the sewing department for a while? I'm really sorry to hear that - both on the pain side & because I'm sure you're itching to do something with that beautiful new fabric you have. Wishing you a speeding recover.

My back is much better. My chiro damn him said to leave sewing alone until he said so, then I asked him last week and he said no, still no.. so I was like ok I'll get my overlocker serviced now while I can't do anything.. then the bugger told me today that it was fine to go back to sewing but I got nothing to sew with! Grrr! lol

Oh how frustrating!! How long does your overlocker take to get serviced? Typical that it would fall over a weekend! Oh well, you must be pleased to at least have the all clear. I'm going to order some of your mama pads with a new nappy - very excited

The lady at bumbles said to have a hemp and microfibre for each nappy and then 3-4 extra hemps. She said if your having trouble with leaking add more hemps not microfibre. This was great to hear after I stocked up on a whole heap of microfibre and hardly any hemps

Don't worry, you'll be fine! I have more mf than hemp as I was late to discover hemp but we still get on fine without any leaks. I use 2 x mf insert for the day and a hemp flat with a mf insert at night. If I were going to do it all over again I'd probably get hemp boosters to go with my mf inserts as it would be a slimmer option than 2 mf inserts together, but hey - it's still a slim nappy and we don't have any leaks. The best thing about pockets is you can stuff them with whatever you want/have! I have a stash of big mf cloths which I got from Mitre 10 Mega on special and that way if I do have a washing emergency I can always use those to boost my nappies. It's not my first choice but they work fine.

i have virtually no hemp and survive quite well. in fact most of the inserts for my pockets are prefolds.

I was finally happy with my nappy lot when I had enough nappies and inserts for 2 days and washed daily. There was pretty much always a load dry and a load hanging to dry. Now I have tonnes because I have only one bubba in day naps for the first time since I started buying MCN!
