I am planning to wean Samara soon and as she has had reactions to formula have been told by the Dr to start on this.

Was her reaction to the formula because she has an allergy to cows milk protein?
My son has a cow's milk allergy that we found when he was weaned, we were told by paed to not give him any form of soy until he was older as introducing it to early to a child that has an allergy to cows milk can then cause an allergy to soy as well. We had to get a specialist formula called neocate, I would speak to your gp again and ask for a referal to a paed. -------------

No you can self refer if you have the money to pay to go privately, it cost us $150.

I also got no help off of GP and got help from Nutricia who said it sounded like an allergy and then a paed confirmed this. Good luck -------------

Samara already has bad ezcema, spews alot and wheezes every now and then. She hardly ever cries so the Dr said she doesn't have reflux.
I try not to eat too much dairy but have to take calcium tablets for my arthritis but notice that if I have a yoghurt she spews alot more. Samara is at the age that I can introduce bread and crackers - can you recommend any brands that don't have milk/protein in them?

The only thing I have found is rice crackers and rice cakes so far, and Spencer loves them. Signature range rice crackers have the least salt in and the rice cakes I had to get organic ones as the super markets only had brands that used soy emulsifiers. They were only about $3 a pack for organic though so I didn't think that was too bad.
Bread I am having difficulty with as most seem to have some sort of Soy in them, but I am hoping that the organic shops will have something to suit or else I am gonna ask the local bakery what they have or if they can bake something special for me. Healtheries make some mixes for bread and cakes (if you are cooking inclined) that are dairy/soy free and they are available at any supermarket. I was talking to the owner of an organic shop down here who said that they have excess whey from milk production so they basically dump it into all processed food, yay! -------------

We gave the gremlins rice bread when they were smaller. Breads with soy lecithin only are usually OK for kids with soy allergy, the soya lecithin is treated so that it's non-allergenic.
Kim - go see jan Sinclair, she is brilliant and will go over your options. Their is a bit of a waiting list to see her, IMO I'd keep breastfeeding till you can see her, or see a general paed and ask for a funding # for Neocate and start her on that pending an appt with Jan. I wouldn't recommend Infasoy, the current practice is not to give soy milk/formula as a main drink to kids under 12 months as it's tougher on the digestive system and contains phyto oestrogens. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)
