Olivia is only putting on minimum amounts of weight each week and after trying expressing for a week to stimulate my milk, my midwife has prescribed Domperidone for me. When I went to get it filled, the pharmacist was really stressing that it is untrialed on humans and it's a strong drug to be passing onto baby, etc.
Anyway, she now has me freaked out about taking it. Has anyone taken it to increase their milk supply, and did it seem to affect your baby in any way?
I want to keep breastfeeding but we are really struggling at the moment and if this works, it'd be great but I don't want to do it at the expense of Olivia's health.

I had it when I attempted to relactate with Miss M...it certianly helped boost things and I only took a short course...what milk Miss M did end up having didn't have any bad effects on her. The relactation was unsuccessful due to Miss M not wanting to nurse in the end rather than any other reason.

I took it for 6 months in order to partially breast feed Fay. I produced no milk from the start and with the Domperidone and a Nazi style regime of 2-3 hourly expressing for 2 months I managed to give Fay 7 out of 9 feeds a day of EBM. She suffered no ill effects. I will try and dig out a link for you from a canadian obs who has pioneered this treatment. Might take me a while tho. The research i read said that not a lot of the Domperidone is passed on to baby, it makes you real hungry tho and I did have some problems with very loose bowels every so often.
I'll see if I can find that research i was talking about.
What ever happens and whatever you decide - goodluck - and make the decision with your heart and head together if that makes sense.

I took it for the 10 months I fed my very healthy and normal 2.5y/o.
I didn't make milk on my own, so needed to take it, and I was doing the regimented express nd feed as well for the first few months to help it along. I found it worked great and my m/w and Jake's paed were happy for us to be having it.

oh yeah I did find it made me very very thirsty (although that is usual for b/fing) and made my hands super dry, so I had tubs of handcream everywhere..

I used it too for the full 6 months I breastfed Gina with no ill health side effects on Gina. From what I've read very little of the drug passes into the breastmilk and is considered reasonably safe. That said, I don't think in the US it's allowed to be prescribed for b'feeding problems.
It's a difficult choice but I don't regret taking it - it meant Gina was breastfed for 6 months and it's what we wanted. We'll probably do the same for baby #2.
Good luck
