Dh and i are finding it so difficult to choose a good name for our baby. there are so many different great names. How many middle names is too many. Your child will have that name for the rest of their lives so you want them to like it. I grew up through school and there was always at least 2 other sarah's in my classes. anyone else finding it a big task.

It is hard, I had names I liked but Arabellas father didn't and then we worried about naming her before we saw her because I wanted the name to match the face (so to speak) Arabella only has one middle name and because I have a long last name I thought that was best. But it is personal preference.

ha, as soon as i found out i was having a girl I got my baby name book and closed my eyes opened it randomly and ran my finger down the page then opened my eyes....
Pretty risky way lol, (tho if it had been a name i really didnt like I would have done it again til i got one i liked)
It landed on Caitlyn and while its never been a name i've been in love with , it fit all my criteria-it wasnt too out there , its irish, and it can suit her at all ages, then when she was born she looked just like a Caitlyn, so it worked.
I added Rhianna as her middle name then her dad (who i was no longer with ) asked if he could ad Marie as well and i agreed as I wanted him to be involved, so its a bit longer than originally planned, but I love it, i think it has a gorgeous ring to it , Caitlyn Rhianna Marie
My next daughter however i have already named, Amelia Rachel Jade, and she'll get that name whether she looks like an Amelia or not Gosh darn it!!!
sorry about the novel
anynames in particular that are standing out more for you?

LOL Kelly I have already named my next 3kids too whetther they suit it or not!
Best of luck choosing a name Sarah.
My perference was to have pacific island name in the name either 1st or middle didnt bother me, to have a family name again first or middle and for my son to have his fathers first name as a middle name. Also like unique names too, Mercedes was going to be Autumn but didnt suit it so her dad named her Mercedes and it matched perfectly! Alize was going to be Alize girl or boy and Lesieli was named after paternal nana who passed away in 1988. Lesieli was 1st born grandchild so it was an honour to name her after her Nana.

Tell me about it! Me and DH are Irish and have a strong attraction to 'simple' Irish names that once outside Ireland become names that the kids would have to spell / pronounce for everyone they meet.
So do we name them what we want to name them or do we name them with names that would 'fit better' to NZ?
Currently we're going for the name them what we want to name them option
|
Posted By: tishy
Date Posted: 27 January 2008 at 3:03pm
Oh for the middle names we're just going to name them after their grandparents.
1st daughter after DHs Mum, 2nd daughter after my Mum.
Same for sons , but grandfathers names.
It's how all my siblings got their first names and it's saves the hassle of finding 2 names for each baby

Name them what you want to name them. All cultural names suit NZ as we are very muticutural nation. My daughter Lesieli (which ia a tongan name for Rachel and Im not tongan) is 12years old and has no trouble with teasing or anything about her name. People cant always get it right but if she sees they are trying she is fine with that. Pronounce Lesi is in lassie the dog and eli as in alley. Ver easy once people get their tongues around it.
Go the Irish names!!!

Great idea on the middle names too. My daughter is best friends with twins in her class since they were 5 so now 12 and each girl was named after each granparent. Eileen and Lorraine (altho Lorraine gets called Lulu) they are proud of their names as they are after gparents so have never had a worry with their names either. Actually in Lesieli's class there are all different names and Eileen and Lulu are probably the only european ones.

Ever since I was very young I have had planned out the names I want for my children, had never really thought about what the father would think. There are so many things that need to be considered when piking a name, both mum and dad agreeing (then in my case my family has to like the name too And it cant be a name of any friends kids and then it has to match last names and middle names too.... I dont know how we ever do it!
Last time we were lucky and the right name came to both of us a month before she was born and it has been great, now we are having trouble finding a name we like as much. With only 2 months to go lets hope the right name will just come to us.

Irish names are very popular in NZ there are lots of Kieran's and Siobhan's.
We've already chosen our childrens names for a girl it with be Catherine Sheryl - after Queen Catherine and my late mum Sheryl.
Boy will be James or Jamie as that is the one name DF and I can agree on. I want Henry or Fergus as a middle name.
We like traditional English names.

We chose a name that wasn't a fad so much (although it is popular) as I got so put off teaching kids who you could tell which year they were born from which singer/actor was popular at the time. And we like normalish, strong names. I liked Jack, but in DH's family the son gets the fathers name as a middle name, and my son was not going to be called Jack Daniel! Eek! We've already got a cat called Jimmy after Jim Beam, so thought Jackson Daniel was a bit better lol
I've had a girls name since I was 14, its simple yet elegant I think. And DH and I didn't care about having more common or popular names, cos we are Emma and Daniel - 2 of the most 'popular' names out there!

hehe, Emma and Daniel, those are Monicas two favourite names on Friends, but she "gives" Emma to Rachel (someone has watched friends a tad too much!)
I have no idea about boys names , I like Ryan and since the sad passing of Heath Ledger , who I've loved since "ten things i hate about you " I like Ryan Heath now
I love Irish names, and i love how they look different to how they sound, like Saoirse (seer sha) or Roisin (roe-sheen ) , so prettyful

thanks caitlynsmygirl I like it too,
I'm a big fan of Tudor England which accounts for my liking of Catherine and while King Henry was a rogue I kinda like him.
I wonder if giving a son names of two kings says something about my expectations for him

Working in a place around babies i can very safely say i have seen more than enough Ava's, Ella's Isabellas and gabriellas to last a lifetime in the last year, lots of Jacks and Jamies and daniels for boys.
It really depends on what you want to choose, Do you want it to be different (to lower the chances of there being 3 other kids in the class named the same) how different do you want it. like Out-there different or just nicely different or can't-ever-spell/say-it-right different.
Things to think about are whether its just a fad or name of the moment, whether you see them suiting it right through all age groups, whether it can be shortened to something - which some like and others don't cos they want their child called by their actual name (that was us), whether it can be turned into a horrible knickname, whtether the initials spell something undesirable, or if initials spell something that again can be turned into a horrible nickname, And also think about future kids, cos if you use kinda out-there name for the first, you can't really just have a Jane or bob for the second now can you.
lol
In saying that, while paris never gets her name said wrong, we often get people mistaking ayja's name for ayia if they don't see the j properly and think it's an i so she gets called something that sounds like "eye-ar" nearly everytime at the doctors, we also get a-jar. We also get people spelling it wrong on things, alot of people still get the y and j mixed up, or we get it spelt like Asia cos it kinda sounds the same.
I feel like saying "no - look at it!!!! you pronounce it Ay-Ja - sounds like you're saying age-ah.
Yep it's hard to choose a name, funnily enough we were set on Leo for a boys name if Ayja had been a boy, but when it came to pregnancy #3, Sage was just right, would have either been Sage (boy) or Saige (girl).
You'll find something, sometimes you just think you have one but it niggles at you and you know it's just not right, then choose something completely different instead - you'll know when you've found the right one, it just feels right.

We loved DD's name so much we are struggling to find a name for this baby because we want it to be one that we love just as much. And because we don't know what it is we're looking for both girl's and boy's names. We have a constantly changing shortlist, and I think the baby will be nameless for a wee while after the birth, which we're fine with.
We are another couple that love irish names, DH's dad emmigrated from Ireland when he was in his teens, with his family, so the Irish link is very strong - he still has a bit of an accent. One name I love that DH is currently not so keen on is Niamh (pronounced neeve), and he really likes Liam but I don't so much. Sigh. We'll get there eventually!
DD has one middle name, but this baby may end up with two middle names if it is a boy because of DH's poppa passing on new year's day, we want to honour him as well as my opa.

I wanted an Irish bnname as my parents are Irish but DH is English so nothing too out there. Our surname is crap to get a good name with - BALL! So no Annette, Hannah Cameron etc.
Whilst I was in labour on the way to the hospital in the car James was trying to take my mind off contractions (didn't work!!) and suggested Rohan - Irish for fiery redhead and a place in Lord of the Rings. So we picke that one - not that I chatted about it very much at the time!
I like Riley for a gorl or a boy, or Neve or Naimh (depending on your spelling) for a girl.
You need to look at the whole name - google it to see what you get. Think of initials and possible shortened versions to make sure they all sound OK.
Middle names - we went with DH's just to be boring but it works. Possibly more than two is too much but it's personal opinion.

Lol! I had to spend ages convincing DH that we couldn't name one of the twins with an Irish name and the other one with a non Irish name. I think he finally got the message
Thanks for the support girls. I've met one person who hates her Irish name due to having to spell it so often, but I've met a few others here since that love their unusual names.

i think ive commented on this topic before but here goes:) my name is Kerri-Anne.. sounds easy but no..i spell it every time i go somewhere and while it never used to annoy me it really pisses me off now:)!
everyone tries to shorten it or say it like it's two separate names..so...for this reason..and the reason i have family members called Storm, Drey, Jasper and Tiger and Octavia:)! we personally chose names that were easy to spell and caused less teasing.. out of those 5, 3 get teased a lot and the other two love their names..so each to their own i guess but i just figure at Tiger's 21st(which isn't far away) it will sound very bizarre.. esp as his middle name is unusual too:) so we went common..Ethan or Georgia and although some people don't like them we are happy..
Having said that if our family had Irish heritage I would go with Irish names :) some of them are great..and names with meaning are always awesome!:)

I am part Italian and have an Italian surname which the kids won't be getting so I really wanted Marco for Jack and so almost got it but Ben changed his mind Caprece is Italian tho
Jacks middle name is my Dads first name and Capreces middle name is my mums middle name (her first name didn't sound right). We named them after my parents because they have been so helpful and always there for us.
Good luck it is such a difficult task.

Darragh is one of my fav boys names. Either spelled that way or as Daire. Not sure which one would cause more confusion here
We've girls coming this time round so are currently going towards : Ciara (Keira) , Eimear/Emer (Ee-mer) or Aoife (ee-fa)
I have friends who names their daughter Nuala (Nu-la). The poor girls gets called 'Nu-ala the Koala' in school.
Also I always have difficulty spelling my name to anyone. It's a pretty basic name however I've got 3 'r's in the first and second name.
I pronounce 'r' as 'or' whereas kiwis pronounce 'r' as 'ar'
So much fun!

Nope I'm not much of a sci-fi person, it annoys DF to no end. I'm more of a fantasy fan myself I shall have to ask him what that refers to - he's read the entire Dune series... I've tried to watch the movies twice but fell asleep halfway through both times

I think you need to not only look at baby name books, but look at movie characters, book characters to get your inspiration to name your little person
Conor Alexander - Conor from The Highlander, Alexander is my grandad's middle name.
Nyah Zoe - Nyah Thandie Newton's character in Mission Impossible 2. Zoe was a name DH really liked, found it in the baby book. I have to say though, that we have no idea where Nyah comes from, we've googled and it comes up with different origins.
Cooper Wade - Huge league fans in our house. Cooper Cronk, is a league player for Melbourne Storm. Wade Mckinnon is a player for the Warriors. I wanted Cooper regardless, DH chose Wade. We both liked Nixon too.

I like names that are simple and not too common. We both loved Gemma and she has Katherine as a middle name. Cameron was alot tougher. I was sure I was having a boy and we couldn't agree on boys names. Dh wanted Tom but I knew soooo many Toms or Thomases!! I wanted Cameron, dh didn't like it. I finally got my way by telling him 5 minutes after Cam was born that that was what I wanted to call him.....hehehe. He picked James for the middle name. So Cameron James. Then we move to NZ and every other boy seems to be Cameron. *sigh*
We've got a girls name sorted for the next one but struggle with boys names.
edited to add that I love those Irish names esp Aoife. And, lets face it, most of us have to spell our names from time to time....I'm Deborah (not Debra hehe), I have to spell it all the time.

After being one of 6 Kelly's in one of my classes in 6th form,..I declared I would never name my child a common name. But I always liked names that you can link the first letter with the rest of the name when you write it,...and ones that are easily pronounced by how they are written,....but when we found the name Isla in a baby book, we both instantly fell in love with it! Mae is just because it flows so well with Isla,..and we chose to not spell it May becuase we thought that spelling looks like its a family name, and it isnt.
Already loads of people get it wrong, but I hope Isla wont hate us for it, but will love her name as much as we do!
Isla(Eye-la,..as in Island), Mae(May)

Kellz- That is such a pritty name! it reminds me of the girl on home and away years ago.
Girls names seem easier to chose than boys.

I have the oposite problem really - I find boys names alot easier. I really love Ella or Eleanor for my next bubs if it's a girl, and Griffin if it's a boy.

Even before we knew we were having twins, we had our fav boy and girl names picked.
The difficulty started when we found out it was 2 girls! haha!
Isla is a lovely name. I've met a swedish girl named that before who pronounced 'ee-la'
Also it's funny how different accents pronounce things different.
To me Megan is pronounced as May-gan rather than Mee-gan.

Hello!
What do you think about the name "Buddy" for a male baby?I like it a lot, because it sounds good and also means "friend".But unfortunately the name is not very famous today, it was famous in the begining of the 90's...What is your opinion?

Ben is better less common than it used to be.
My favourite boys B name would have to be Bryant - I have a friend with that name and we usually call him Bry.

Bradley, Brent, Boston, Ben, Brian, Bryan, Byron, Brad, Blair, Blake, Brett, Bailey, Billy, Bono.
Buddy sounds like a term of endearment rather than a name, like Mate or Pal.

Before I left the UK I had heard of a Buddy, Barnaby and loads of Sonny's. (i know it doesnt begin with B!)
Names are just soooooooooooooo difficult to choose for some people (me included) arn't they!
I thought that with a surname with one sylabal (dont know if that's how you spell it!) that it would be easy as we could have short or long names - not so likely.
I dont want a common name of the time as I want my child to be the only one in their class who has that name so if they are being spoken to/told off they know it is them - LOL . On the other hand I want a name that will suit both a young and older person and not something made up and way-out!
Does this make sense?

Makes perfect sense rosewood.
We don't want flavour of the year names either, and due to our surname want something that is easy to spell/pronounce.
We have found ourselves liking traditional British names which seem to be out of fashion but still instantly recognisable.

I am having name issues. I am pregnant with my 3rd baby and haven't found out the gender for any of them. This is the first time I am really wishing I had found out so we can be better with names. My second was a boy and we really struggled with his name and ended up with a compromise that we didn't LOVE. It is important to me to have something we really love this time but are struggling with boys names....again. Anyone know good ways to figure out what you're having. I've missed my opportunity at the scan. Have done the ring things and it's looking similar to my boy... I think. ANy other suggestions?

Keziah Leiandra - Keziah = A Sweet Spice (Hebrew) and Leiandra = a name I fiddled with and changed a few letters so I have no idea what it means LOL
If SHE turned out to be a HE we had chosen Corbyn Nathaniel
I am Anikka, DF is Raoul, Kaen is DSS, Lucretia is DSD and Seth is DSS so we all have unusual names in some sence of the word

All the names on my side of the family are traditional English names and all the names on my partners are traditional Indian names.
We'll be having something Indian that's easy to pronounce and able to be shortened to something Englishy (mainly so both sets of great -grandparents can say the poor mites name lol)
I have some middle names in mind Grace (girl) and Mukesh John (boy) but first names will be chosen by my SIL.

We took the easy option and are naming the boys after their grandfathers and dad. That takes care of their middle names. We have so much differculty with choosing boys names. Every one I like ends up being a name of DH's relatives. He likes names that dont go with our surname or have the same initials as another name we have chosen.
We want different names that are easier to spell and again dont get teased or twisted to much.
We chose Levi Michael for our first son's, Michael after the grandfather and Levi was going to be named that whether he was a girl or boy. Already he has been nicknamed "Leeves" by an uncle, but it kind of suits him and only the uncle is allowed to call him that.
So for these twins, that rules out any names starting with "L" and we need to find names that are similar style to Levi.
So far we have settled on Jordan Terence and Marshall Bryan. Im fixed on Jordan and we have settled on Marshall although Im open to changes on that one. Again middle names are Terence, after their dad, and Bryan after a grandfather. At the moment, we cant decide on which name belongs to which twin so we call them "Twin A" and "Twin B" to coincide with their medical records so far. Weird I know but at least we can identify them separately so far.

My DH and I had trouble finding a girls name not sure why we didnt with the boy names we just both heard Jayden and loved it straight away, we settled with:
Jayden (boy)
Paige (girl)
Once we know what we are having we can sort out the middle names.

Jayden is my nephews name.. I liked the name Jayde for a girl, but it's too close so we decided against it LOL
Decided for something a bit more unique.. not so common in schools etc although I used to get called 'Anikka the Sneaker' @ school

Kids can be so cruel when it comes to teasing and playing on other kids names. I cant remember being teased with my name, Catherine, but I do remember teasing my sister a lot with her name, Kelly. It was always, Kelly-jelly, smelly-kelly etc. It always worked to make her mad, but laugh at the same time!
I love the name Jayden - we would have chosen it but again they have a cousin..........damn, big families, they take all the good names.

I found it very difficult to choose DD name. I wanted some thing that was Indian and yet not too difficult for others to pronounce!
I had a list of names I liked and sat down with DH and read them out...his one and only answer was NO, NO, NO...AND he toyed with NOP, NAH etc.
I was sooo mad...finally we were watching the latest Indian movie and the the main female charecter was called Zaara....I said to DH....how about it? He thought about it and said Yah ok!!
I am going to have the same battle with DH again with this one. After the 18th (fingers Crossed) I will start looking at names and then throw them out the window...DH likes Ishant (boy)....I hate it!

While i will take DPs opinion seriously , if he vetoes everything i say then he knows the rule, when HE gives birth HE can name it.
Not that im pregnant (Yet!) but im sure next time i'll have a boy, because boys names are what i find hardest , if i have a girl her name will be Amelia Rachel Jade, i've loved the name Amelia since Caitlyn was 1, but thought it too cruel to change her name
I also like Paige
But boys names? eek i have no idea ! Ryan maybe?

Love the names Lea. Kelly, I was lying in bed this morning thinking "hmm, what about Amelia". It's so pretty!
We're struggling with boys names - I feel I can be a bit more adventurous with girls' names, but boys I feel we'll still be a bit traditional. Our surname is also short and starts BR - rules out any names starting with B (there goes Benjamin) or multiple consonants. Murphy's law says it will be a boy, since we've had a girl's name sorted since before TTC!

DH and I have already decided on a name if it a girl - Antonia Phyllis Kahutaha Maureen. The middle names are from my grandmothers and DH's mother.
But it is a boy, we still haven't decided!!! I love the name Jolyon, but DH doesn't. But at least we know the middle names, as there is a tradition on my father's side of the family, which is Raymond Charles.
But I will feel sorry for our child, as DH and I have joined both our last names together to be hypenated...

This has no doubt been mentioned on here before (I'm new to ohbaby), but have you guys been to the Nymbler site? http://www.nymbler.com/ - http://www.nymbler.com/
You type in the names you like and it comes up with suggestions of other names you might like. I found it quite useful for name ideas (but then I like old-fashioned names, might not be so suitable for people who are looking for a 'unique' name)...
