See, due to murphy's law and all that rubbish, I'd picked a girls name for if we were having a girl, and neglected to pick a boys one - and what's happened - we're having a boy LOL.. No-one told me how hard it is to choose a boys name (morelike pick one that we both like) that's not something from the movies or lord of the rings (BF thinks its a good idea when it's not) So i've come up with Thomas Matthew (after his dad) What do we think? I quite like it - my sister hates it as her favorite cats name is Thomas, mother wants me to name him something way out and rediculous, dad doesnt care etc.. tell me what you think please!

I think it's a lovely name too. Are you happy with the nickname of Tom, because it will happen.

I lke both names. I know alovely boy named Thomas - my cousin is also Thomas but the less said about him the better. in all honesty, it doesn't matter what you name your little boy, SOMEONE will comment negatively on it "oh" screws up face" you want to name him THAT?". so please yourself and your DP and name whatever you like. family will get used to it.

Yeah I agree with the girls above, he's your little person, and the name is lovely. Choose what you want, not what everyone else wants, if that were to happen the poor child would never have a name!

We never told anyone the names we had selected so when the baby was born it was given the chosen name by us and no one has even dared mention whether they like it or not, I didn't ask for there opinions, too late the babys been named already and we like it, thats all that mattered to us!!
I think its a nice name and I agree boys names are very hard, if we had had a boy he would probably still be nameless as we couldn't agree on anything, as for girls names, we had 10 that we really liked

It is a nice name but I do have to agree with your sister I know a lot of cats named Thomas including our next door neighbours.
Unfortunately I don't like the name Matthew as all the men I've met with that name have been quite arrogant and its put me off.
Depends on how it goes with your family name.

Yep we did the same as peachy. Chose the name long before she was born, but didnt tell anyone. We had told people names we likes and everytime someone had a negative comment, and so we were put off lots of the names.
We still get some funny looks when we tell people Isla's name, or they see how its spelt and think it is said Iss laa (its Eye-la by the way!!), but people tend to be kinder when its actually someones name, rather than just an idea!
I like the name u have chosen,..but are u happy with Tom?

I'm like the only person in the world who found a boys name easy:) !
And when i tell people what we have chosen I either get 'oh' or 'that's a great name'...so many times I wanna say 'umm did i ask for your opinion':) but never mind ditto what everyone else has said..as long as you like Tom as well as Thomas I say go for it:)

We were the opposite DH was adamant we were having a boy ... so we had the boys name all picked out ... then anatomy scan day ... wham ... its a girl lol.
We actually settled on a girls name that very day (as we walked out of the hospital)
Oh and I like Thomas Matthew ... although he will get called Tom so as long as you are ok with that, there were lots of boys names I didnt like because of what they could be shortened to.

Hi, I happen to agree. He is your little man and people will comment.
We were going to call our DD Hugh if she had been a boy and the amount of people who asked what her name would have been if she was a boy and then laughed or said things like "just as well you had a girl then!" it has made me more determined to call the baby a name that we like and not that everyone else approves with.
I have a UK friend who had twins one of which she called Ursula. Again not everyones favorite name but it really suits that little girl.

I found boys names easy .
I like the name you have chosen and at the end of the day it is yours and your BF choice.
I love the old school normal names. You can get so much stuff with their name written on it.

I love the name Thomas- if our next child is a boy that is what he is going to be called (DH doesn't like it, but I don't care....he isn't the one who has to give birth ). I really like the more classic names for boys.
we found chosing a boy's name harder than a girls- we had heaps of choices for a girl, but couldn't agree on a boys name- just as well we had a girl .

yeah you don't want him to have to go through his life going 'K-E-R-R-I ..yes that was two R's ...hyphen (they normal say what? so I say dash - capital A - N- N- E (yes two N's and an E....
I've spelt it every day of my life and it drives me insane! :) no wonder i didnt get a middle name!

I like it too.... Thomas Matthew - sounds like a strong boys name!
We found boys names really easy and with only 3 weeks to go are still unsettled with the girls name. But like a lot of people are keeping the names a secret.

It's a lovely name. My cousin named her little boy Thomas, and no one would dare call him Tom or Tommy! He's never been called anything other than his full name, so it really is a reflection on what the parents and close families call them as to what 'sticks' and what's not allowed LOL.
We had a list of boys and girls names when pg with Ashlee, but found out at the anatomy scan that she was a girl so it was down to only 2 names that we absolutely loved. Really though, I think she was probably always going to be an Ashlee We're pretty set on a boys name if we happen to have a boy next time around. Back to square one with the girls names though!

We picked Samantha's name when we found out at the anatomy scan she was a girl. My MIL didn't like it right from the start. Everytime I saw her she would ask me in a snarky way if we were still going with Samantha as a name, and would keep suggesting other names. We stuck to our decision.
I say tough to your family. It is your decision, if they don't like it they can go jump

I like the sound of that name. But like everyone else has said it's your baby and therefore your decision.
We have had a girls name picked out for years which is quite different and we have kept it secret because we don't really want to hear about other peoples opinions. But I just know that our first baby will be a boy and do you think we can settle on a boys name??

Yes it is your baby and it is your decision.
However if I had had a choice I would never have chosen my own name, I was constantly teased as a kid and am always having to spell it out for people.

Me too, and then I married someone with an unusual last name and have to spell both to people now. Although I didn't like my name when younger I do like it now, even though most people don't say or spell it correctly (I gave up about 15 years ago bothering to correct people).
We didn't tell anyone the name we had in mind until he was born, people are less likely to make negative comments that way, plus is nice to keep somethings to yourselves, you sometimes feel like public property when pregnant.
Oh by the way my name is Marisa

At my previous job there were 3 Thomas's, two were Tom's cos they suited it and one was always Thomas - it felt right on him and Tom seemed so very wrong, so I think if you encourage Thomas then people will use his full name, not that there is anything wrong with Tom that is a sweet name too!
We plan on keeping our name of choice secret until bubs is born, dont really care what anyone elses opinion is but still dont want to hear Ohhh thats the name of such and such's child or Ohhh I knew a right rat bag called that etc
Its really true that people will get over it, we had friends who chose a slightly old fashioned boys name and in the beginning it raised eyebrows but now 12 mths on I couldnt think of the lil fella as anything but his name.
