I've read babies may do it when a bit over-tired, releasing aggression etc and it may help if you encourage him to bang plastic cubes/balls to release aggresstion or give him more cuddle time to soothe him.
They may also do it for the fun of it once they discover they can but should outgrow quickly.

ETA: Gina did this for a day or so early last week but not since - thank goodness as I can't stand the sound either

First time poster here

When my daughter started grinding her teeth, we tried asking her not to, but that didn't get us very far so we just had to ignore it in the end. Every now and then she will have a go, but doesn't do it nearly as regularly anymore. I think part of it is the novelty of having teeth too.

Alize is a serious teeth grinder and even the daycare has asked me how to stop him as it grates their ears lol. Ekkk I cant stand it too. I always use the distrsaction technique and if that doesnt work I give him something to chew on. I have been known to give my cellphone to play with (usually totally out of bounds) at the supermarket when he starts it on the trolley. It really sends shivers down my spine

James does this now to, it is horrible its got a bit of a sound like his jaw needs an oiling lol.
But James has also started biting his bottle teat every now and then when feeding rather than sucking its really frustrating.
