Trying to think of the "geographics" of how we are going to sleep...carry etc this new baby.
Blake is obviously in a cot....he doesnt walk yet either... So just wondering... 1. When can he go in a bed (Blake 15months now) 2. When could baby and Blake sleep in the same room 3. Is it hard work and safe carrying around a big TODDLER (15kg) when you are pregnant or is it just one of those Mother Nature things you just adpat to? -------------

Firstly big big congrats.. lol
secondly - when can he go into a bed? well now i spose, depends how much you want to have to put him back   some people leave it closer to new baby coming, others wait til baby is out of the basinette and make it a big boys transition thing of buying him a new bed and special duvet.. it's really up to you.
When can they sleep in the same room, again up to you - you and only you know how well blake sleeps - if he's a good sleeper there no prob in sticking em in together once baby is a few months old etc.. really depends on their own routines and sleeping habits. third question - You will find, by the time you get big enough for it to get tough, he'll be starting to move around and walk sometimes.. he's a bit older than paris was when i found out i was having ayja. I found i coped by making sure i always took the buggy, or if in a shop put paris in a trolley. around the house it's not too bad as they usually don't have to be carried long distance or will crawl around after you. Paris tarted walking i think around wehn i was about 4 or 5 months pregnant, and by the time i was huge she had learnt she could run away from me cos i couldn't catch her! (oh the fun!) you adapt and just remember he's gonna start moving soon! ------------- Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja

Anytime from when you think he won't fall out. Climbing in/out easily helps too. Hannah transferred at 18mos and Briona transferred at 15mos (was being a monkey!) 2. When could baby and Blake sleep in the same room This is tricky, there are so many factors. I had Kryssi in our bedroom until about 4-6 weeks in a bassinette then transferred her to the cot in Hannah's bedroom at that point. There were a couple of rough nights here and there but has mostly worked ok. We tried room-sharing Hannah and Briona (a few times) but Briona needs a lot of time to wake up properly in the morning whereas Hannah is awake and ready to go - so didn't work out too well! The only bad thing is that it makes you nervous to do CIO/CC methods with the baby, for fear the older one will wake. 3. Is it hard work and safe carrying around a big TODDLER (15kg) when you are pregnant or is it just one of those Mother Nature things you just adapt to? I didn't find it too difficult until my bump got big. It is definitely safe but you need to watch how you pick him up etc as it can pull in your back when the ligaments are soft. And you just get tired so easily... do you think he'll learn to walk soon though? -------------  |

Hannah is a little older than Blake, but we have only just recently put her in a big bed - didnt want to leave it too close to baby arriving, but wanted her in the cot for a while longer. I would think anytime from now would be ok. I guess if you do it now before hes walking theres less chance of him getting out all the time...
Once this baby is sleeping well I will probably put both of them in the same room, then turn the nursery into a playroom. Well thats the plan, jsut depends on how things go. Hannah is over 16kg and I have really struggled. I think it would be a bit harder with Blake too as he is younger. I have got Hannah to get up on a chair with me if she wants cuddles, or if she hurts herself I need to get down on the floor, rather than carrying her. Sometimes she just needs to be picked up but now I have less room on my hip and out the front it is really awkward. I have had a really sore back and a small hernia beside my belly button, which my doc thinks are both from carrying such a heavy weight!! ------------- Aimee Hannah 22/10/05 Greer 11/02/08 |

I'll just answer #3 lol, coz I have two 10kg gremlins who are only just walking so need to be carried a lot, am already finding it hard work just coz I am so tired and have no energy, have no idea how I'm going to cope as I get a bigger bump. But it doesn't do bubs any harm for me to carry them, and on the odd occasion I've even had to lug both of them round at once. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

PS. They're staying in their cots (which convert to beds), we're buying a new cot for bubs. Don't want too much upheaval for them in one go and they won't really be old enough IMO for a bed by the time bubs is born (21 mths) ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

As for needing to carry baby people have answered it but I will too I had to carry Alan most of my pregnacy with Mikey cause he was not walking as for big bed we are starting ot get Mikey into a big bed now. I have both boy's in the same room and have done scince Mikey slept through the night it was easier then it is now we are going ot split them up when my bro moves out for a bit till baby is born.
ETA: remember Blake will be 2 or close to 2 by the time baby is born alot will change with him between now and then. ------------- Deborah Mum to:

Kelly - re the portcot questin - it all depends. Paris was in the portacot until she went into a bed at 11 mths
She didn't roll etc and always had the safety sleep and was a little dot so just stayed in the basinette part of the portacot till about 5/6 months then in the portacot. We were upstairs and the house was always warm anyway so i didn't worry too much about the "she's closer to the floor she'll get colder" remarks i got. Ayja got moved down to the cot part sooner as she learnt to stick her arms and legs over the sides of the basinette part, but stayed in the portacot again until we got the convertible cot when she was about 1. The main thing i did though - was not use the portacot matresses, as they are thin and made for once in a while use and are very thin. I got a normal foam full thickness cot matress, opened the cover, cut it shorter to fit inside the portacot then sewed the cover closed. You just need to be aware with doing that that it makes the baby closer to the top of the basinette by an inch or so as the matresses are thicker/higher.. so yes. you can do it  ------------- Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja

Firstly congratulations 
Jack wasn't as heavy as blake but I found it really convenient having a bump and carrying a baby around cos baby could sort of perch on the bump. I had both of mine in cots for a while, if you buy a second hand one even if you only use it for a couple a months and then you can re sell it and pretty much get your money back. Both of mine are terrible terrible sleepers so I didn't risk having them in the same room (although that was the plan). Caprece was so terrible at sleeping I ended up clearing out the spare room and putting her in there. But hopefully you get a great sleeper
