Hi,
I have a 2 and a half year old who since potty training her wee's has had a quite a few successful times of number 2 on the potty but has recently started to do all of her poo's in her knickers. 
She says sorry - it was an accident, but we have not had a potty poo for quite a while now. She has also started to hold on to poo's until she cant hold on any longer. She's happy to sit on the potty/toilet for a wee but not for a poo. Does anyone have any tips for getting us back on track? We have tried sweets if you go on potty - no such chance! Tried telling her off - still happens next time. Tried staying calm and saying Dont worry its just an accident - still happens next time. We are going through loads of knickers as she feels that this is ok? Help!?!?!? |

Is it painful for her to do a poo? That may be why she is hanging on till she goes in her knickers because she really doesn't want to go.

Jake was excatly the same. we had him really well-trained and then suddenly - he had accident after accident. Nothing seemed to work. We tried charts etc. what worked a bit was we got Shrek (whom at the time Jake loved). now shrek was bit of a toilet problem and jake needed to "show" shrek how to go to the toilet. this worked really well and when jake had an accident we would pretedn it was shrek and jake would hep clean it up, and we explained that we go to the toilet to do wees and poos SHrek. It seemed to go okay. still had the odd accident, and then suddenly everything just clicked and he went. He liked to hear the splash which i found weird, but hey, no more clean ups.
another friend of ours had similar poo problems and her little boy expplained that doing poos was "scary" - then once again, just one day it clicked. |

Her poo's arent really hard and she doesnt say that it hurts. We will try the favourite toy and try potty training that as well - Thanks. Willing to give anything a go! |

I think it is common. I just read in a book ...........
" Others, however. may happily do wees in the roilet or the potty but wait until their napkin is back on to do poos. THey may actually askfor a nappy or, worse still, hide behinda chair to do poos..... Breaking bad habits Sometimes it is effective to wash your child's bottom with cold water if he insists on pooing in his nappy or pants after he has been toilet trained for some weeks. You do not have to say more than "poos go in the toilet". Be very matter of fact about cleaning him up. This by the way is not at all uncommon and spontaneously stops sometimes as late as 3+yrs. Some children seem scared of poos dropping into water of a toilet.... Do not withold the nappy or scold over much as it is not unknown for children to hold on and become constipated." They also suggest a reward system and lots of praise. So it seems you arent alone. complicated wee things arent they? |

sounds similar to what we went thru with Ashlyn & yes it got very frustrating but I just had to get over it and deal with the 'accidents' support her thru it all and she just got the hang of it all of a sudden. She's 2 1/2, I think she's doing really well. I think you just have to be patient and ride with it. TT can take a while, everyone is quick to say that their kid was TT in two weeks or in a month etc, but most kids take about 6 months on average. Hannah took 8mos, starting when she was 2. Briona was 2 in July and she will occasionally say "poos" in time but she doesn't have any other interest yet. Given that your DD is under 3yrs I think you'll just have to keep up the encouragement. Anything else may just stress her and make it worse. -------------  |
