For the last...oh, a bit over a week I think, Alex has been sleeping better and better at night. He's been stretching it out from five hours to almost seven last night!

BUT

during the days he's been wanting to feed more and more frequently. At the start of the week it was 2-3 hourly, but yesterday it was every 2 and today it's more like every 1.5 And they aren't just top-up feeds, he's really hungry and feeds properly on both sides.

What's going on here?! And when will things settle down? Feeding him every hour and a half is starting to take its toll

Because he is not feeding in the night so much, he will need to make up for it during the day, so he may be trying to build your milk up at the moment. Hopefully in a few days your milk supply will have increased so he has more to feed on and can space them back out a bit. Thats my thoughts anyway. Yay for getting more sleep tho!

Sounds like a growth spurt to me - and those often last a week or more (not just a day or two). Don't worry it will ease off. In the meantime get as much rest as you can and drink plenty of water to help keep your milk supply up.

Little babies need to feed between 8-12 times in a 24 hour period so like Aimeejoy said if your little guy is sleeping 5-7 hours at night then he needs to get those feeds in in a shorter time period. In saying that he could also be having a growth spurt   I'm sure things will settle down soon. Sam goes through stages where I feel like all i do is feed her

Ella does a similar sort of thing- since she has started sleeping 10+ hours at night, her daytime sleeps have been getting shorter and she has been feeding more often. This has gone on for a couple of weeks, so I am assuming that it because she is sleeping longer at night that she needs more milk during the day to keep her going. I try and keep the feeds no less than 2 hours apart, to give myself enough time for my milk to come back in- if you are able to extend the feed by 10-15 mins, you might find it helps.

I think you must have been right, that it was a growth spurt. After feeding every 1.5 hours yesterday I put him down to sleep at 9pm and he didn't wake up for another feed til 4am! And then he had another good sleep again til 8am and is now having yet ANOTHER good sleep!

Which is all great because my poor boobs really needed the break after the mashing they got yesterday

I'm glad things are better! I too remember feeling soo relieved once Gina's growth spurts were over! It made me feel better too knowing (while getting thru) that I was helping her grow!
