I can't believe it, Jeremy is still not putting on weight fast enough. Re my milk, I have am doing everything pretty much right, I eat well, drink heaps of H2O, am exersising moderatly bla bla bla.
Have got his reflux quite controlled with gavison so we can't blame it on him chucking it all up again.
My nurce has suggested that I either wake him during the night for an extra feed or top him up with formula....I almost cried. I am so gutted with the thought that my milk may not be enough for him, I just can't believe it. And re th e waking, he is such a good sleeper, I would hate him to start getting in the habbit of night feeds.
Anyway, just had to share it, thought it might make me feel better but it didn't really.

my little piggies put on weight with my milk, but were still super hungry - constantly. so we made the decision to go on formula as well. It actually made me feel quite bad as well, despite KNOWING that i was just doing what was best, and despite reassuring others on this web site about the very same thing.
feel better!

What about expressing some milk for him to have in a bottle?? I did that so that Josh was still having BM. I have only now just introduced formula.
But don't feel bad if you have to give him some formula better thta he gains some weight instead of waking at night.

i know how you feel because when i had to give Astin formula (he was just toooooooooo hungry!) i bawled my eyes out everytime i gave him the bottle for about a week until my MW told me that its just a temporary thing until i make enough for him so maybe itl be the same for you.

Hi,
I have just had to switch my baby on to formula because I got mastitis for the 5th time in three months and my gp strongly advised I stop for my own health. I too feel really bad about it, sat crying on my husbands shoulder a night before a coffee group meeting because everyone else would be breastfeeding and I would be giving a bottle and felt like a failure.
Hopefully you will only need to give formula short term but if you do need to top him up all the time its not the end of the world it just feels like it, and at least bub will still be getting antibodies etc.

please dont think your milk isnt enough. Breast fed babies dont always put weight on like bottle fed babies and this isnt taken into consideration in the normal charts that plunket etc use...
Neither of my boys put on lots of weight at all. on his web page i have written:
Yesterday we had our eight month Plunket check up, and we hadnt grown much at all, I was expecting a big weight gain, but he went from 7.7 to 7.8kg.
now i know thats a diff in ages there too but i still believe that if your baby is happy and sleeping and putting some weight on and/or growing in other ways that there would be no need to wake him to feed or even supplement.

man I love this forum
thanks everyone, you have made me feel so much better.
It is reassuring to read that I am not the only one that has gone (or is going) through this (and I really feel for you all too. I can't believe how much it has upset me to be honest) and yep, I do agree with both of you gandt and james, but it is really good to read it instead of just trying to convince myself in my own head

I would have thought that if he wasnt getting enough from your milk he would be letting you know in no uncertain terms & I would doubt he would be sleeping thru the night if he was starving. Every baby is different in their growth patterns, & by the sounds of it he seems happy & healthy & he must be putting some weight on so it can't be all bad, maybe he is just a plodder. No advice to give tho sorry

Charlotte, how much does Jeremy weigh now?
I am with Gandt, Samantha is much lighter than friends babies that are on formula, but she doesn't look underfeed or skinny at all. She was only 5.8kgs at her last weight and that is the very bottom of the Plunket chart for her height etc. I think some babies are just smaller/lighter than others and I hate how they try and put them on a chart and tell you how well/not well you are doing by that!!!
If Jeremy is still sleeping through the night then he is obviously getting enough! There is no way I would be waking Samantha up to feed her, or ruining my sleep without a Bl**dy good reason!!
(Perhaps I should add here, that I do give her a dream feed around 10.30-11pm before I go to bed just to see her through the night).

I agree with everyone as well....Elle (who was a 9lb 15 bubba), didn't gain much weight at all in the 1st 3-4months, and I worried about it just like you. And I tried everything as well. Also my plunket nurse gave me the same advice as yours did - but I didn't wake her, I was of the opinion that if she was hungry she would wake and want feed and she always seemed to be happy (she was also gaining in length).
I think we (as Mums) stress a bit over their weight gains - probably cause everyone always asks - how much does he/she weigh etc (well I get that heaps anyway). And Like GandT said, some bubbas just don't gain an aweful lot.

I'm with the others... the plunket charts are just a "guide", they are not the be all and end all. If you babe is happy, smiley and sleeping well then I'd not be at all concerned.
You are doing a great job

the concern is not how much Jeremy weighs as such but more so that he is falling off the graph. Cailin was a little one and gained weight slowly, but she stayed pretty much on the same line on the chart...which was the bottom line btw (what a midget )
Jeremy started at 78% and is now 7% which is all a bit poo.
Anyhow, he is weighing 5.67kgs at the moment, so put on 70grams (2 ounces) in 2 weeks.
I do agree with you all though re him being happy and contented, and surely if he was hungry during the night he wouldn't be sleeping right through would he.
BTW, I didn't wake him last night, couldn't bring myself to do it

Just a thought is the reflux meds working?
We were initally diagnosed with relux but its turned out to be an over milk supply. Also try having a look at the le leche league website and/or contact your local leader. I have found them to be more helpful than plunket so far.
I agree with whats already been said. They tell us that tristen is doing great was 8lb born (3.630kgs) and his weigh in at 9 weeks was 12lb 2oz (5.51kgs) but he was a real grizzley, unsettled baby who wasnt sleeping well (hence how we now are working on the over supply problem) not even sleeping through the night & according to the plunket line is a fraction underneath the guideline. So i wouldnt be too concerned esp if hes sleeping through the night.

I wouldn't worry too much about his weight. At least he is gaining something! And if he was hungry he would definitely let you know about it! Just think though that in a wee while he will be on solids and maybe then he might gain some more?
Daniel is one of the smallest june bubbas (in weight and height) yet he is one of the oldest (was 7lb 12oz born). It use to bother me a lil that he doesn't gain as quickly as the others but he's happy. He's just gonna be a shortie like his mumma.

He's sleeping well and a hungry baby doesn't sleep on through. Would you do a dream feed just before your own bedtime? It might me a nice reassurance for you that he's getting plenty to drink, and doesn't cut into your sleep too badly.

I agree with the others! Plunket told me that Laura hadn't put much on between visits, and was also going to suggest that I wake her at night (no way!)
If he's sleeping well then he's obviously not hungry.
Laura is a reflux babe too, and often I don't finish her feeds, cause she is screaming at me . Well, more screaming in pain I think, this is probably why she has smaller weight gains.
I think you are doing a fantastic job!
