Had to go back for the 2nd part of our anatomy scan today (as bubs was uncooperative with facial shots last week) and the sonographer noticed that when he was on his stomach, baby had a hole in his atrium. We then had to wait about 45 mins and turn him around on his back to get another look, and she couldn't see the hole anymore. I might have to have another scan at 24 weeks to check again. It's just completely taken me by surprise, and now I'm so worried because it's so close to the aorta (if the hole is there), and every single male in my mum's family have died from a similar aortic condition. I know it's incredibly irrational to be thinking like that when it's not confirmed, but hey I'm pregnant! Irrational's my middle name!

Has anyone else had problems like this arise and then be told later on that it's fine? I just feel absolutely terrible about what might be ahead of us and our little man.

Hi Emz, what a horrible thing to find out for "maybe"! One of my younger brothers was born with a hole in his heart but it wasn't picked up until he was 6 weeks old (born). He had an op when he was about 8mos old, with 50% chance of surviving the op, but now he is almost 17 and you wouldn't know anything had been wrong! If he hadn't have had the op he probably wouldn't have seen his 5th birthday. And his was genetic too (my grandma had a hole in her heart but she wasn't operated on until 40yrs old because her mum was never happy for her to have the op. And she only just passed away this month at 76 years of age.

I know it must be pretty worrying for you at the moment but try not to worry as finding these things out early can make all the difference. I suspect it still has time to come right before he is born as well. Your mw will know lots more details of what can be done

Did your mums' boy-kins (lol) die in infancy or later on in life? But also don't forget that the medical world advances in huge leaps every generation.

Oh emz that's a horrible thing to be waiting on confirmation for. But the good news is that if it's there they've picked it up early and can monitor it and plan to get it sorted.

Busymum is right the stuff they can do now even before the baby is born is incredible.

Big hugs hon

That's a pretty freaky thing to find out... but try not to worry about it (I know that's probably not a helpful thing to say)... My hubby's brother was born with a hole in his heart, he didn't need surgery but it didn't close over until he was 10 years old. He is now about 25 and they have a healthy baby daughter! I think that was just VSD though, I don't know if a hole near the aorta is different to that...

Sorry I'm probably not much help!

I was told at my twenty week scan that there was someting wrong with Kaia's heart. The sonographer was a very sombre man and he made the whole outlook seen very bleak... I was referred to some cardiac specialist woman at AK hospital only to have her tell me there was nothing wrong!

I hope the same thing happens for you!

Yeah I hope it's nothing, but still not nice to have to wonder about it until I talk to my m/w next week. I'm sure it's probably nothing, it's just a waiting game now I guess.

My mum's side were all older (above 50) when they died, but it was a sudden thing that noone knew was coming.

A lot of bubs with holes in their hearts the holes repair themselves. My cousin had surgery when she was 5 to repair a hole that didn't repair itself and is now a very healthy 10 year old.

ETA: Knowledge is power, so if there is something wron it's far better to find out now so you can attack it head on. If we hadn't found out about Sienna's kidney problem on an antenatal scan it wouldn't have been picked up until she got a nasty infection and became really sick which would probably have happened in the first 6 weeks, but because we knew, we were able to start her on medication at 6 days and arrange her surgery promptly to fix it.

I have to agree with everyone, if there is a problem it is better to know now so you are mentally prepared. Jakob was born with a hole (large VSD) and a faulty valve, and we didn't find out til he was almost 4 weeks old. I went through absolute h#ll when I found out and didn't have much time to deal with it all mentally, and have spent alot of time in hospital over the last month or so, which was really hard to cope with while I was still in shock about the whole situation. He had surgery at 6 weeks and is just recovering now. Hes only just back to his 4 week old weight at 8 weeks but he is developing fine and otherwise doing really well. Greedy guts is packing on the weight now! (Not so great for me with the constant feeding though!)

We have the best peadiactric cardiac surgeons in the world in NZ, so even though it doesn't help - if there is something wrong at least bub will be in the best hands. They really work miracles, and the little babies recover so quickly it is amazing.

I hope for your sake it turns out to be nothing. And wish you all the best if you do have to go through what I've just been through. Big hugs!!!!

Thanks for your thoughts ladies, will keep you updated. Nikki - all the best for your wee man, mine is just a possibility, but it's your reality. I'm glad he's piling on the weight though, that must be a great sign. Good luck for you and your bubs.

Oh Emz,

My family has hereditary heart problems but we lost 3 cousins before it was picked up but none since they discovered it and tested all of us.

At least they are onto it, and the doctors can do amazing things these days.
