Topic: pram seat vs bassinet at 4mths Posted: 27 August 2011 at 4:37pm |
We've got a 'city select' pram, it has a bassinet for babies under 6mths and a seat for kids over 6mths. I never imagined it but DS2 is huge and is too big for the bassinet already and he's only 4mths old.
The seats can be tilted back, but they're still seat shaped, i mean they don't 'lie flat'.
How bad is it really to start putting him in the seat at only 4mths?
I don't see how it's worse than the capsule which is seat shaped but the manual says don't stick a baby in it till 6mths.

How good is is his head control? I would think if he can hold his head ok then it wouldn't be a problem

We have a Strider DLX which has a 'seat-shaped' seat which tilts back as well. Our manual says this is suitable from birth. We got a bassinet attachment as well, but probably used the seat for DS from about 4 months with no issues. As long as it tilts back far enough so it is not making the head fall forward I would have thought it would be ok.

I thought it was to do with them slumping and cutting of their airway then anything else so if he has good head control i imagine he would be fine. Its not like he's going to live in it!

I had exactly the same problem with my boy. I put him in the seat, but always had it tilted back so he didn't have to hold his head up himself. He could at 4 months, but tilted back was obviously less effort for him.
I say go for it if you can have him titled back a bit. It certainly hasn't stunted my gigantor baby!

Like Bowie said it's to do with the airway being restricted. That's why they recommend you don't leave babies sleeping in their capsules for any length of time so I reckon as long as you apply the same rules to the pram it'll be ok

I wouldn't stress - yes it is about the airway but at 4 months he should have pretty good neck/head control - and as you said, it's the same as the capsule. Being the stroller you'll obviously be there all the time that he's in it as well. perhaps he'd like sitting up in it too? I started sitting DD in her stroller (a Mountain Buggy) at 3 months and she loved it. I had it on a slight angle still but it was like a whole new world opened up to her when she could look out!

thanks all. i think i'll use the seat then. it can tilt back and face me so i'm sure he'll be fine. he's not usually in it for more than an hour anyway.

Yeah, I'm with the others. We never had a bassinet for our buggy. We just lay her as flat as it went which was easily enough when she had no head control, then slowly sat her up as she did develop head control.

I'm with all the other posters, we changed DS from the bassinet set up to the seat at four months and he loved it - way happier to spen time in his pram after that

My little boy went into the seat at 4 months mainly because he hated the bassinet, he was so much happier in the seat :0)
