Hey ladies,

For anyone that's read the TWW thread, you'll see that I was told I had a Polycystic Ovary today (just one ovary affected)

I just googled PCOS....... NOT a good idea........ I don't recommend doing that!!
The internet always gives you the worst possible scenario!! So I want to try and stick to just asking my PCOS questions here, and to my doctors of course!

It is early days, with me only finding out this information today, and I am still not yet sure if I have full blown PCOS or whether I just have one PCO, but today an internal anatomy scan showed that I have one healthy ovary, yet one ovary that looked polycystic. So I am guessing its not all bad news, since only the one ovary is affected. Still gutting nevertheless.
I am just about to go for blood tests to check all my hormone levels etc. I guess this will help the specialist understand a bit more about where things are at for me.

I was overwhelmed at my appointment when she told me about the polycystic ovary, so I didn't take everything in like I wish I had... Nor did I ask the questions I wished I had asked... (Don't you hate that?) But that's why these forums are so great I guess! As some of you may be able to shed some light on things for me

Firstly, has anyone else got PCOS? Or one PCO (as I do)?

I get regular AF's, a 30-32 day cycle on average, and seem to ov regularly without any intervention or help (though late-ish in my cycle, around day 19). I have never missed a period in my life (that I recall) and can always guess (to the day!!) when AF will come.
(I'm guessing this is good?)

The Ob/gyn did mention Clomiphene to me today... But I really don't understand how wclomiphene be able to help me? I guess it would bring forward my ovulation? But it doesn't do anything other than encourage ovulation does it? I don't know much about Clomiphene, and would be keen to know more!!

I am also confused about having a PCO, yet I get regular periods? It seems conflicting!
Is the only downfall of having PCOS that you don't ovulate at all/regularly? I'm struggling to see the correlation here...
Symptoms of PCOS that I have read do not seem to affect me, I am a normal BMI, don't have oily skin, etc. Though I know you can have PCOS with no symptoms too!

The Ob/gyn said that people with PCOS may take longer to conceive than average, but if I get regular periods/regular cycles and therefore ovulate regularly, then I'm not sure what the issue would be? Is there another reason that could be preventing me from conceiving? (I conceived 3 times last year, but no luck this year so far)

I'm just super confused and any help/advice would be awesome :)
Its all new to me! And the wider internet is a SCARY place!

Thanks ladies!
x

Hi Charly. I have PCOS, as do my entire extended family on my mothers side as far as we know!
Firstly, I wouldn't stress too much about it as it varies so much from person to person - like you've discovered there are many levels and stages. Generally, being a hormonal issue, insulin resistance plays a huge part. So women who get PCOS tend to easily put on weight, but not lose it very easily. And extra weight around the middle means worse hormones, which means more acne, unwanted hair, insulin issues etc - so the fact that you've got normal BMI means you're really in a good place! You just need to make sure you always keep on top of it, as loosing weight is very hard.
For me, my sister had irregular periods and didn't ovulate with her PCOS, and took clomiphene to conceive (and now has 2 kids). When I was younger I had heaps of EWCM (didn't know what it meant back then), regular periods etc, and did actually have my son naturally (though by then I was having issues, and had 4 rounds of clomid before that). If my hubby didn't have issues I could probably have kids without too much trouble. Both my cousins are currently pregnant as well with PCOS/endo.

Personally, I'd say if you've taken blood tests to confirm ovulation and good progesterone, I wouldn't do clomiphene as it really is a drug to get you to ovulate properly (which you don't need if you're already doing that). If you're going to look at drugs, metformin is a better place to start (stops the insulin factor) - it does help with PCOS, and also lowers miscarriage rate (one issue with PCOS is it increases chances of miscarriages to more like 50/50).

Thanks mushroom, that is some great info :) and some great advice.
It makes sense, as losing weight is an effort, and I've worked myself into the ground in the past to lose small amounts of weight. I try to stay on top of it... I feel the pressure to stay on top of it more so now too.
My midsection is actually where I carry the least weight though, I'm very much a pear shape. I guess this is helping me and I didn't even know it!
Your stories about your family give me lots of hope too :) thanks!
