The pain team area group of specialist nurse and doctors who work together to resolve issues with chronic and acute pain. Most hospitals have an acute team who deal with pain that is happening now and will resolve intime, Ie after surgery or injury and there may be a chronic team who would look into more long term issues like tissue damage, nerve damage. Could be using meds, massage, acupuncture that sort of thing
Totally depends what you are being referred for as to what they would do for you

Sounds like a completely random referral. Like Redbedrock says, there are acute and chronic teams - acute teams work in the hosptial with inpatients who have significant pain issues, and are usually a anaesthetist and a nurse specialist. I wouldn't expect to be referred to them unless you were an inpatient. The chronic pain team is called the Auckland Regional Pain Service and is based at Greenlane Hospital. They work with outpatients who have chronic pain conditions, and have physio, occupational therapy, psychology, social work, nursing, pharmacy, psychology, psychiatry, rheumatology and anaesthetics on the team. If you're under TARPS, the waiting list can be quite long. I would be surprised if your MW referred you to this without a reason - usually it is a GP referral.

So in summary - weird referral esp given that your MW doesn't actually seem to know what they do.

I was thinking the same as you Flissty, the chronic team in wellington has a waiting list of several months, i presumed it was the same elsewhere. I wonder what MW is hoping to acheive by referring you
