Topic: Nightmares/Awful Dreams Posted: 12 September 2009 at 8:12am |
Hi there
For the last 6 nights straight, I've had really awful dreams that have been so terrible that I've woken up crying. I haven't had any of these dreams in years and years yet I've suddenly had one every night this week. Just to clarify- they're random things like the baby being kidnapped, SIDS, really terrible things. I wondered if maybe it was something that happens in pregnancy and was wondering if any of you lovely people might know if this is a common thing or not? Thanks

Yes, very common - in fact, it was the first symptom I had of being pregnant.
I usually dont dream (or dont remember) and had horribly vivid dreams from about a week after conception.
I'm afraid for me they only stopped when I was no longer pregnant.

Azza that's terrible! Nice to know it's not something strange with me then. Is there anything you can do to try and either not have them or minimize them? I know it sounds ridiculous but I'm too scared to sleep!

Hey there - big hugs, can't be nice having nightmares.
While I've not had nightmares as such, I've certainly had the most strange and vivid dreams. I wake up wondering where they could possibly have come from.

Oh yes, I remember I woke up in the middle of the night and had to wake DP up to hug me, I'd had a dream where I miscarried at my baby shower
It must be the hormones!

I'm not having scary pregnancy related dreams lately. Just scary dreams in general. I woke up early this morning and my DP was asking if I was ok, as I was breathing really fast and then stopped breathing for a bit. I was like, yeah I'm ok, I was just having a really bad dream.
At the pre 12wks point of pregnancy I had a couple of horrible pregnancy loss related dreams and yeah they seem so real. It's so relieving to wake up and discover it was just a bad dream.
With my first pregnancy I never had pregnancy loss dreams, just very vivid dreams in which I was pregnant and bad things were happening to me. One was so bad I woke up having a panic attack, hiding under the sheets and having trouble breathing because I was so worked up.

I have had the odd nightmare, but nothing like any of these ladies have suggested.
I don't think there is any western/modern form of medicine that can assist in taking away or minimising the dreams. But if you're an alternative medicine person like me, it may be worth ringing a few places and seeing if they can offer any help.

I've had a lot of really scary dreams since getting pregnant. Really vivid action ones like shootings or bombings etc. I haven't had any for a while but I wake up crying or shaking when they happen.

I don't have nightmares as such but even before I found out I was pregnant I was having really vivid dreams every night. Very unusual for me as I don't normally remember any dreams! It was one of the things that made me think maybe I could be pregnant this month.
They are getting less frequent now so hopefully the same happens to you as you sound like they are causing you a lot of distress

Yep I dream every single night (since I became preggie) - they're not always scary, but they're always very vivid and very disturbing!! Weird preggie dreams. Def hormonal, hope they stop for you soon.

My dreams have been so vivid lately, I'm not usually a big dreamer and if I do I don't usually remember them very well, these have been very vivid/memorable dreams about the baby. I hope they ease off for you soon!

I had dreams I was an FBI agent.. it was scarey.. lots of baddies chasing me and try to kill me! If it wasnt those then I had very naughty dreams
The FBI ones were sporadic over the whole pregnancy, the naughty ones were just in the first trimester

Glad I wasnt the only one having those dreams! There goes my theory it was because I was carrying a boy. Some mornings I woke blushing they were so realistic, hoping I wasnt making any noises that DH might have heard

i have had awful dreams as well, pretty much every night. most of them revolve around me getting killed. one night my whole family were trying to kill me, my mum, dad and brother. it was horrible, when i got up to go toilet i couldn't get back to sleep cos every time i closed my eyes i thought about it again.
I wake up covered in sweat and scared most mornings.

it definitely HAS to be the hormones!
i havent had any specifically regarding the pregnancy or being pregnant but i have had plenty of not so nice dreams lately too!
most have some relation to water strangely enough - tsunami/ floods and the like lol i reckon dreams have some sort of meaning or another and find this website to be both interesting and reassuring... even if it is a load of rubbish!
