Help! Lil miss has decided that playing games with me is much more interesting than feeding and it's turned her feeds from 5min power feeds into 35-30min playing sessions with not a lot of actual feeding going on .

She latches fine but she sucks shallowly with no swallowing and when the milk does let down she dribbles it out of the corner of her mouth. Her sucking is pretty furious, and she is also going thru a stage of furiously sucking her fists, could it be related? Is it a comfort thing? When I say to her "what are you up to?" she grins at me and pulls away, and this morning when the milk let down she laughed at me while it all ran down the side of her mouth all over my pants.

When she first did it I wondered if maybe I'd run out of milk on that side but when I took her off and squeezed the milk squirted (yep, literally squirted all over her face) so that's not the problem.

She's also started being easily distracted during feeds and I have to try and feed her in a quiet room which isn't always possible with the other kids so she needs to get over it!

Any ideas? I'm not convinced she's actually getting enough decent feed time with all the monkeying around she's doing...

Hmmm, sounds like she has reached the distracted phase. It lasted months for me, I'm sorry to say. It got quite frustrating, but they do get over it.

It's worst when they pull off your boob just as the young male waiter brings your coffee and gets a cop of more than he bargained for....

When Missy does that to me (and I know she is waaaay older) I dothe old firm voice and whip her off and put her down and ignore her, she soon gets the picture that mucking around = no feed.
Other than that, put a blanket over her so she can't look around? tickle her under her ear to stimulate sucking, and a great sucking stimulator is rubbing circles in their palm with your thumb....

I remember Maya going thru a distracted phase but I'm sure she was older. I don't remember her doing the furious sucking thing tho. Oh and lil miss bites She holds on with her gums and wriggles and squirms and I can see my poor nipple getting stretched all over the place.

LOL Fats, the firm voice thing just made her giggle at me. She has no idea what I'm saying, but I don't usually talk to her when she's feeding so I think it was a novelty. Will definitely try the blanket thing, and also the tickling her ear thing. The only trick I know is the blowing on their face and that only works when they're dozing off.

Rubbing Benjy's palms always worked a treat when he was little. It is still a reflexive thing to stimulate their *I think??* until they're about a year old.
The other thing, which is probably completely impractical for you unless you're home and have someone else to supervise your big girls, is feeding lying down. It helped slow my letdown so he had to get serious about feeding in order to get his dinner and because there wasn't so much going on around him, he laxed out and fed better.
Good luck Emma, it is so frustrating when you get stuck to the couch feeding for ages!

Do you think she could be ready for a change in routine - ie a reduction in the number of times she's fed each day?  I moved DS onto four hourly feeds during the day by the time he was four months old, and that worked really well for us. He stopped mucking about and taking forever to feed, I think because he actually felt hungry by the time of the next feed.

Just a suggestion, since Chiara's almost four months old .

might the dreaded teething be starting too? That can make them mess around with feeding as it can cause discomfort - the biting might be a symptom of that?

Hmmm... she sounds like my little darling!!!
I'm not much help, but our DD does the same. Maybe started around 4 mths.

She bites down with her gums, pulls off as soon as she hears her dad come into the room, and often stops feeding to look at me. Frustrating!
Oh and she pushes off with her feet against the arm of the chair and thinks it's a great joke!

Now that I'm thinking about it she's got much better (now 5 1/2 mths) and is now getting less distracted (unless Dad's around - but we just kick him out or tell him to shhhh because she always gives him her full attention!)

Oh our little darlings!!!!!!!!

I'm not keen on that phase at all. I figure if they aren't really feeding then they can't be really hungry. (I know that sounds strict but you just gotta see my chubby babies to know that I can get away with it!) So mucking around = unlatched, boobs away, and I put them onto a book or toy or something. They'll come back later - it's another way of stretching the feeds out so that instead of a lot of silly little feeds they'll have a few jolly good feeds.

Hmmm, I now wonder if she's not that well, she's been unusually grouchy today and has had trouble sleeping (as in 1 1/2 hours total all day ) and not feeding much either. Took her to the doc who thinks it's just a cold, she's quite wheezy but then she's often like that.

I did wonder about the teething thing tho, I'd have thought she's a little young and none of my others have ever had much teething drama but then she is chewing ferociously on anything she can get near her mouth.

Stretching the feeds to four hourly might be something to try too, altho she sometimes does go four hours in between feeds.

Thanks for your feedback! Will keep you posted!

If she has a sniffly nose coming on, that would explain the fussiness.

I've been using saline drops which usually help with the snuffling. But she gets out of breath really quickly.

Caleb started doing this at about the same age and never stopped. Actually he only got worse but he is still BF at 16 months so it must be working for him.

Sorry I can't offer any advise. Oh yeah, it gets worse because now he has a happy little BFing song he hums to me while he is feeding.

Lucky he is sooo cute.
