I finished at 38 weeks with Caleb and he was 8 days early so I only had one week off. It would've been good to have early finishes for the last couple of weeks as I was getting tired but had a lot of work on and was training my replacement.
Hi had my MW appointment today and we were talking about taking maternity leave etc and she gave me my letter for work as I want to put in for this shortly.
My MW said that she recommends that for first time mothers to try and start cutting down your hours or having half a day or a day off a week from 28 weeks. Then if you can afford to, try and take maternity leave from around the 34 - 36 weeks (ie when the government paid parental leave kicks in) to give yourself plenty of time to rest and relax as since it is your first you don't really know what to expect.
Second time round you have more idea what to expect, know how you coped with the first, whether you were early or overdue, and have experience to help guide you on what is likely going to be best for you and the baby.
