Topic: Lunch and Snack idead for an 8 month old Posted: 06 March 2009 at 2:35pm |
Caden is starting to have more finger foods now, I am giving him a banana broken in half and he eats both halfs, he sometimes has grated cheese but more plays with this than anything lol, and he has bits of kiwifruit somtimes aswell. I havent really tired him with bread and toast yet as the one time I did he tried to shove the whole lot in his mouth and I worry that he will choke
So for lunch most days, he has a banana and a tin of something, and some water, then his bottle a little while later. Is this enough? and should I be offering him snacks through out the day aswell??
He loves to feed himself!
ETA-I have some fishfingers I want to try him with, and also can I give him baby peas whole? I have noticed than when he eats banana etc, he really moves his mouth around and up and down so Im pretty sure he is chewing, he doesnt just suck, then swallow the food, he works it round his mouth.

yup, he should be ready for peas
Corn fritters are great with canned corn kernals and grated courgette. Cruskits with hummus or marmite. Little sandwiches with cheese. Pasta.
I tend to give a rusk or biscotti in the afternoon as it tides him over.
Yep, I'd try fishfingers if I didn't hate them so much!

Mousetraps with marmite/vegemite and cheese. Another option on the cruskits is avocado. JJ likes homemade chicken nuggets (from the destitute gourmet book).
He also really really likes big chunky potato or kumara wedges. Chop into quarters lengthwise and roast with no added salt, but make sure you let it cool for a while before giving it to him cos they can be superheated inside. A trick I picked up from the BLW forums is to keep a plate in the freezer so you can put food onto it and that cools it down quickly.
Fish fingers should be ok but check they don't have a high level of salt. JJ has peas but I can tell you they go straight through relatively unscathed so I'm not sure there's much point
Corn fritters are a good idea, Fliss! And there's a good easy recipe for carrot/courgette fritters in the recipe section of the OHbaby! website (not the forums) too.

These are just plain fish fingers I think, But Ill check the pack, we are having them for dinner tonight, so I thought he might like some Im also making potato wedges tonight, so Il do some plain ones for Caden.
Good idea about the cold plate aswell, cos yeah potato etc can be damn hot in the middle
fritters are a good idea! I think Il try some of those, make a heap and freeze them!

the corn comes out looking the same as it did going in, but there must be some nutrients in there somewhere!

lol, yeah, when caden has carrot in his dinner, it comes out like it went in, I dont puree it anymore, its just mashed and lumpy.
Caden tends to chew a lot of things though, so he might try and mush the pea's in his mouth, we shall see!

I roast potato, kumara and carrot cut in quarters longways for Joel, he loves it. He also has marmite rolls(bread with marmite , crusts cut off, rolled up tight and baked in the oven at 140 for about an hour) cruskit with marmite or avacado. Tonight he potato/pumpkin mashed really thick with lumps with some gravy from roast pork, and half a tin of lambs fry and bacon mixed in for good measure , ate most of it.

Dominic did the same sort of thing when I first offered him bread so I just cut it into bit size pieces, worked a treat. Well cooked asparagus or that asparagus from a can is good too, gives them smelly wees though

Yep Id try the fish fingers. Cooked bits of meat/chicken fish etc. Aria meat chips are good. Well cooked eggs. Id also start introducing a range of different startchy foods eg oats, rice couscous, breads, pasta, cereals etc. Dairy products can now be slowly introduced, although you should wait till over a year to introduce milk as a drink you can use it to make white sauce to add to veges. Green beans. Citrus fruits. Id def wouldnt be pureeing food now just mashing or mincing. Sounds like Caden is definately chewing or gumming his food.

Last night for dinner, we gave him peas, broccoli and cauliflower(whole) and fish fingers, I cut the fish fingers in half long ways to let the heat out and make it easier for him and he seemed to like them, he picked the peas up and ate them, there was a bit of gagging, but he sorted himself out fine
Then for lunch today I gave him banana cut into sticks, some grated cheese, then gave him bread cut into stick(soliders) with marmite on them and he LOVED them, he handled it well and i just sat back and watched and didnt panic when he shoved a lot in, had to fish a few bits out but he did well, and then he has an orange piece in his fresh food feeder.
So Im really happy about our progress, he can have sammies for lunch now with some fruit, Im going to try jam tomorrow, and some smooth peanut butter the next day!
I have only given caden some apricot yogurt, he wont have cows mil until he is 1.
