    Posted: 10 October 2011 at 4:31pm

My husband and I have been trying to conceive for a few months now (on & off). I also had a miscarriage in Dec 2010.
While I think our problem is the timing (my periods are irregular), Im also worried that my stress levels can cause us not getting pregnant.
When I get stressed or worry I get a lower tummy tension (that is very difficult to control or get rid of).
Ive researched it online and apparently its common for some people who get stressed and tense a part of their body. Unfortunately I cannot find any answers whether this tummy tension is also preventing me from getting pregnant? or affecting the baby while I am pregnant?

***Does anyone else have a similar problem or knows something about it?

Heya LittleT. I get stressed out too and I know what you mean about that lower tummy tension. My intuition tells me that the tension itself probably wouldn't affect your fertility or baby, but the stress itself could. The tension is only a symptom of the underlying stress.

Have you tried any breathing techniques to ease the tension in your tummy? I saw a doctor who showed me how to breathe properly because believe it or not, breathing incorrectly can actually cause anxiety! What you do you is sit down somewhere quiet and and concentrate on your breathing making sure that your tummy rises when you breath in and lowers when you breath out. It's important that you get this right. So many people do it the opposite way around. It's amazing how much more relaxed you feel after you've done this for a few mintues. Keep practising every day and it will start to become natural.

I've also been told that I would benefit greatly from doing yoga which relieves a lot of stress and tension, so this is something else you could try.

Also - lavendar oil on your pillow! So relaxing. You'd need to check that it's safe to use when pregnant though.

Good luck

Thank you for your reply, Lilycat.

Yep, I do yogalaties twice a week and it definitely helps. Have been to a therapist who specialises in 'stress in women' and she as REALLY good, learnt how to breath and the thought pattern and how to try & stop it escalating, etc.

My worry was more than I get so busy & too many things are happening and I dont even notice how my tummy tension is already there. And that's when I start wondering if this was the reason all these months that I havent been able to get pregnant!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts :)

Sounds like you are doing all the right things and I wouldn't worry if I were you. I do know exactly what you mean though. I suffer from anxiety and if I take a minute out to notice what my body is doing I realise that I haven't been breathing correctly and my tummy is tense. I too had a miscarriage earlier this year. I really don't think that the tummy tension by itself would have been the cause for you or me.

I do think you need to deal with the actual cause of the stress though as this could be having an effect. I went to a counsellor recently who really helped me figure out the cause of why I get anxious and it has helped alleviate the stress significantly because if I know the cause then I can do something about it. Maybe you could try slowing down a bit if this a cause of the stress for you?

Good luck and fingers crossed for a BFP for you soon.

Yep, it is totally about the cause....Sounds like we are very similar, as I have also experienced anxiety and that was a big part of the reason why I went to the therapist lady.

Sorry to hear about your Miscarridge and yes, I dont think the reason both of I went through it was due to our stress/tummy tension. But sometimes I wonder - is it just tensing mussles around that area or actually tensing your womb inside?! Coz I did it a few times while I was also pregnant.....

Good luck to you too (if you are trying again) :)

I reckon if anything, the tummy tension is probably strengthening your muscles around that region and might even help if you're pregnant! hehe. I reckon you should ask your doctor about it next time just to alleviate your mind - I'm sure it's nothing.

does sound like we're pretty similar. We are TTC at the moment and I just joined this forum so I could obsess about it bit cos my husband is sick of hearing about it adn I don't want to talk to my friends/family etc!

oh haha...that was my origional reason for signing up on here. I started getting a little obsessed and needed a place to go to talk about things every day! haha

As long as it gives you positive stuff, that's fine. But it started affecting me in a negative way last year and I stopped coming here. This was my first post in a year....

Where in NZ are you from? Good luck with TTC :)

I'm in Wellington.

Is it friendly and supportive on here? Thought I'd see what it was like but I won't stick around if it starts getting negative in any way.

Oh yeah - its very friendly...Its not that....

It just got too much for me, coz when you have all these thoughts and worries in your head and come on here and read some of these sad and challenging stories that people talk about, it kind of gets to you a little. And besides I was obsessing about the whole thing so much, that when I signed up on here, I started obsessing even more! haha

And you can imagine how you feel, when you sign up for a forum thread called 'July babies' when you're only 6 weeks pregnant and start participating in all these conversations and some girls start saying that they start bleeding and then you see messages from some of them saying that they miscarried... And then...funny enough you miscarry yourself....

So it was just too intense for me. But its a personal opinion. You may totally find it great and helpful. Like now - you helped me understand that Im not the only one out there and things arent that bad! :)

I can totally see how that could happen. First time around for me I didn't realise I was UTD until I had the MC so didn't think to obsess, but I should probably take it easy and not try to obsess too much! Good advice!

Yes, all MC's are challenging, but it makes it that much harder when you had a few weeks to get used to the idea and sort of start bonding in a way. I was 10 weeks when it happend :(

But its all about going forward with positive attitude and believing it ll happen soon. It is easier to say that do though! Good luck with everything, hun :)

Oh I'm so sorry to hear that you had to go through that LittleT :(

But you're right, the only thing you can do now is keep positive. It will happen soon - it's happened before so at least you know it can happen AND there are lots of things doctors etc can do to help us make it happen quicker if needs be. We chickys get it pretty rough at times huh. Good luck with everything too and feel to pm me if you ever feel like venting or need some support
