Hello Mums and Mums-to-be! I am in need of quite a bit of advice. I am 5.5 months pregnant and moving from the U.S. to Dunedin in a couple of weeks (my husband will be working at the University of Otago). Just based on my initial research and discussions with some of my husbands soon-to-be colleagues' wives, I think that the maternity/birthing process is much different in New Zealand than in the U.S. I was advised to get a midwife, and Prue Thompson was recommended by one of the wives. However, based on the phone number on this website in the "Find a Midwife" section, when I tried calling the number was not in service. Would anyone happen to have her current contact information or could anyone recommend another midwife? I know that I am a bit far along in my pregnancy, and usually the service of a midwife is secured at the beginning of a pregnancy. I am also looking for some advice on whether or not I will have problems securing a midwife this far along in my pregnancy, and if I will have problems finding pre-natal classes to attend (I was advised that these fill up rather early as well). If there is anyone out there that could provide any information I would be extremely grateful. My doctor here advised me to secure a doctor over in NZ before I moved just in case there were any complications that came up in my (rather lengthy) flight over.

Hi there, have just sent you a PM with Prue's phone number and also my midwives numbers so hopefully you'll be able to get a hold of them through those numbers.

I didn't find too much of a problem getting into antenatal classes, we did however do weekend ones as my hubby works at night, but once you have a MW they'll be able to give you contact details for all the courses.

As far as G.P's go, its often best to find one in the area you live. I know for a fact the mornington health clinic (which has a range of very good Doc's) is really good although last I heard from them they weren't taking on new patients (sorry thats not much help to you) but perhaps try them now as I have heard nothing but great comments.

Congrats on your pregnancy and good luck for your big move. If you have any other questions feel free to ask, I also have heaps of other numbers for MW's if you need them (in case you can't get a hold of Pru or Morag)

Hayley

I live in Port Chalmers (just out of Dunedin), and my midwife is Rebecca Taylor, I can give you her number if you like. If you wanted to book antenatal classes now, I can also give details for a few places that do them. Let me know, and I can PM them to you.

Also, if you are keen at all to catch up with a few Dunedin mums, check out the Dunedin mums thread in the Mums Meet Up section - I'm always to keen to meet new mums-to-be!
