Ok.
Jake has this nasty rash, and it started around the time I took him of formula and put him onto cows milk (about a week ago), so I have decided to stop giving him cows milk and try him on soy milk and see if that solves the problem. Thing is, cheese dosen't really seem to affect him, and I never really noticed it with yoghurt, but if it is the milk, then the yoghurt will have to go, won't it? Now, how do I not give him yoghurt? my wee man LOOOOVVVEEESSS his "yo yo". So, dairy free ladies, what do you give your bubbas instead of milk/cheese/yo yo?
Thanks in advance.

How bout leaving out all dairy for a week or so and then trying again just in case it wasnt the milk that did it?

I'll try and help as much as I can. I'm lactose intolerant (not allerginc) so try to avoid milk and yoghurt. It's possible Jake is lactose intolerant too if he does not react to cheese as the fermentaion process involved in making cheese actually breaks down the lactose. Also, for some quite complicated reasons, some ppl who are lactose intolerant do not react to yoghurt either (I'm not one of them)
Here's a quick list of substitutes:
# Milk - soy milk or rice milk or almond milk. Those are very common and should be in all supermarkets. You'll need to get him to try them/try diff brands until you find one he likes as they can taste quite different. Some of the soy ones come in flavours eg vanilla so he may enjoy that?
# Cheese - there is a soy cheese you can buy here in Auckland at some supermarkets but it's quite expensive
# Yoghurt - you can buy soy yoghurt that actually tastes nice from the chilled section in supermarkets. Other than that, you can buy silken tofu and do quite a lot with that incl cheesecake - yum!
Hope all this helps you and good luck with managing it

... or maybe a few weeks - takes a while for it to leave the system.  You can get soy yoghurt at the supermarket.  I have no idea what it tastes like though!

Thanks for your suggestions, ladies. I went to the supermarket before to get soy milk, and there were so many choices it was mind boggling!! Have just bought some that says milky taste, so good, it was. Will try flavours if that dosent work, and other brands. Have also been reccomended rice and goats milk, AND I saw lactose free milk! I took him off formula as I'm trying to save $. I've had him on it this long as I noticed he got runny poos and red bum when he had cows milk at 12 months plus, and I get a runny tum if I have milk as well. Didn't kow about soy yoghurt? Guess I could cut up fruit to put in it for him! won't be the same as choccy blues clues, though!

yep am going to ring tomorrow, its like getting an audience with the Pope, though, so am going to cut milk etc out while I'm waiting, just to see if that has any effect as he is bound to tell me to do that as well. If I ring first thing, I may get in on tuesday.

My son is also lactose intolerant and seemed to react to soy also, we were on lactose free formula before I found the lactose free milk. If your son likes choc flavoured yoghurts so much you could make your own choc flavoured custard with the milk you're using, my son loves his "yoghurt" and I can continue to give my older daughter hers without him having a tantrum.

Good idea, but he dosen't like custard (weirdo!) I've tried that several times when I've run out!!

He's been on the soy since monday and he REALLY likes it, he has never drunk so much milk in his life, went through a litre in under 24 hours!! And, the rash is much better. Am using Tui Bee Balm with Bepanthen on top of it to clear it up, which seem s to be great. Will get some soy yoghurt and give that a crack, too. He likes fruit yo yo too, so we'll see..

Hannah loves soy yoghurt but she seems to get runny poos with it (luckily shes ok with soy milk). The ones we got had fruit chunks in them.

That was the next thing I was going to ask, I noticed Jacob poos more since using soy. Not runny, soft, though (which is good, I guess) but way more pooing. Normal?
