hi everyone,

I can't remember from last time (and also can't remember what my m/w told me this time)

But... I'm planning on going down for my test in the morning - can I have anything to eat/drink in the morning before I go or not?

Normally I just have a cup of tea (with a couple of sugars) when I first wake up, but I think last time I was told not to have anything - any help?

If its the first one you can eat -just be careful what you eat... i had jam crumpets and that put my sugars up too high... ring them in the morning and check.

I had mine at about 11am and had breakfast. Call medlab (is it still them doing it??) and they will confirm it for you but I am sure you can eat beforehand, you just cant eat or drink anything after you have the drink and before they take yoru blood.. i think.

Not much help LOL, I cant really remember either.

I just had my polycose last week and it is not the fasting test, so just have your normal breakfast etc. I would second what Bizzy said though, be wary!

I failed mine and now have to do the 2 hour fasting test this week

I was told to eat breakfast before mine and she even asked me if I had eaten before she gave me the drink to drink.

Had mine yesterday and had normal breakkie (two pieces of toast). I wasn't told I had to skip breakfast, they just give you the yummy glucose drink, then you wait an hour in the waiting room and then they do the blood test.
Should have taken my book though....the mags weren't that great and an hour is a long time when you're sitting in a waiting room!

I went back to work for that hour and everyone was having coffee Won't have that problem this time though - I'll get a toddler to run after instead.

Remind me - it's a urine and blood test yes?

I was going to say Trish that you probably having the second test done (as your first) because you are going so early on in your pregnancy you must of had it before or high risk?

I have to go for one at 20 weeks (aprrox MW will confirm tomorrow) as i had GD with my last pregnancy and bet I will just go for the last one (2 hour one) straight away.

Have they changed it? It used to be that you just had a blood test first and got the results of that (no drink at that one).

Then if you failed that, they sent you back for the 2 hour thing with the drink?

I am going to do mine on Monday but didn't realise I may be there for an hour...

The polycose test is a sugary drink and you have blood taken after 1 hour. You don't have to fast before the test - but I wouldn't recommend going straight after a meal or having anything very sugary before going as it might give you a false positive result. You should be able to leave the lab but can't have anything to eat or drink(other than water) unti they take the blood.

The GTT (glucose tolerance test) is the one you have to fast for. They take a blood sample , then make you drink the super sugary drink. Then you get to sit in the lab for two hours, no food or drink (other than water) and they take another sample at 2 hours.

There could be different rules and stuff in different parts of the country and testing labs- so would recommend taking a book and a bottle of water to either test.

Just to update on my test - I rang up medlab the day before my test and they said to have breakfast as normal (I just had my usual cup of tea with 2 sugars!!) and my test came back normal (thankfully!)

Just remember to take a book or something with you as you're not meant to leave or walk around!

Really? I was allowed to leave and come back - infact the medlab staff expected it. The woman looked at the clock and told me to come back to the building by 25 past so they could take the bloods at half past.

Oh I got a urine test done too but it was additional - must be something my MW always does so that's where my confusion was

No I haven't had it with either of my pregnancy's
I was asked to do this as part of a study to see wither its better to test women earlier in pregnancy or leave it till 28 weeks - or when its done
